Read how two students write a composition. Who is the better student? Why?

Writing English SEE PAGE 328

Anna

Sofia

She leaves her composition untilthe day before she has to give itto the teacher.

She sits down in front of the TV.It’s her favourite programme.

She looks at the title of thecomposition.

She writes two sentences.

She watches TV. She writes a few more sentences. She thinks there are somemistakes in the grammar. Nevermind, the teacher will correct it ifit’s wrong.

She’s not sure how to spell this, never mind. One more sentence.

OK, finished. She puts it in herbag and watches TV.

The weekend before she has togive it to the teacher, she sits onher own in the kitchen. She looksat the title. She thinks a bit.

Then she writes a few ideas onto apiece of paper, in no particularorder. She looks up a couple ofwords in the dictionary and writesthose down.

Then she has a sandwich and goesto watch TV.

The next day she looks at whatshe wrote. She adds some moreideas. Then she decides how toorder her ideas. She starts towrite.

There are some words she’s notsure about so she looks them upin her dictionary.

When she has finished writing, she reads carefully through hercomposition. She crosses somethings out and changes one ortwo sentences.

Then she looks back at her notesfrom other written work. Shemakes sure she hasn’t made anyof the same mistakes.

Finally, she writes out hercomposition onto a clean piece ofpaper and puts it in her bag.

What do you do? Discuss it with your partner. Who has got the best writing habits?

Using a story SEE PAGE 6017Little Red Riding HoodOnce upon a time there was a girl called Little Red Riding Hood.

(What was Little Red Riding Hood like?)

One day her mother said to her: ‘Little Red Riding Hood, I want you to go and visit yourgrandmother. She’s not very well so I’d like you to take her a basket of food.’ ‘Yes, of course, mummy,’ said Little Red Riding Hood. So her mother prepared a basket of food. (What did she put in it?)

Later that morning Little Red Riding Hood set off with her basket. As she was walking through the forest singing she met the woodcutter, then she met a stranger. (What did he look like?)

‘Good morning, sir,’ she said brightly.‘Good morning, little girl,’ he said. ‘And where are you going?’ (What did she reply?)

‘I see,’ he said.‘Good day, sir. I must hurry now.’ And she set off walking. The stranger ran off very fast, which she thought was odd. Some time later she arrived at her grandmother’s house. (Describe the house.)

‘That’s funny,’ she thought. ‘Why is the door open?’ She pushed it gently and saw her grandmother lying in bed, so in she went.‘Hello, grandmother. I’ve brought you some nice food.’‘Thank you, dear,’ replied the grandmother in a funny voice.Little Red Riding Hood looked at her grandmother. She looked funny.‘Grandmother, what big eyes you’ve got.’‘All the better to see you with, my dear.’‘And what big ears you’ve got.’ (What did her grandmother reply?)

‘And, my goodness, what big teeth you’ve got.’‘All the better to eat you with.’ And grandmother jumped out of bed and pulled off her nightcap and nightgown. It wasn’t her grandmother at all. It was a big ugly wolf. (What did Little Red Riding Hood shout?)

At that moment the door burst open and in ran the woodcutter with his axe. When the wolf saw him, he was frightened and ran away.

(What did the woodcutter say to Little Red Riding Hood?)

Then they heard a noise coming from the cupboard – it was grandmother’s voice. (What did she say?)

They opened the cupboard. Grandmother was all right. So they all hugged each other then they sat down and ate the food that was in Little Red Riding Hood’s basket. It was the last time any of them ever saw the wolf, too. (Why? What happened to the wolf?) And they all lived happily ever after.
