- bone dry to intensely sweet screwcap new vintage

NEW Domaine Joseph Burrier, Saint-Amour Côte de Besset 2015This is quite a structured cru and its tannin and minerality underpin the black, ripe, powerful fruit. Now to 2027. 13.5% ref BC-BJ7091 £17 bottle £204 dozen

NEW Joseph Burrier, Juliénas Beauvernay 2015The soils here are grey, rocky and poor. Just 17.5hl/ha ripened to a grenache-like sweetness. Smooth, round and opulent. Extraordinary. Like griottines (small tart Morello cherries) macerated in alcohol. A giant, but a gentle giant. Now to 2024. 14.5% ref BC-BJ7101 £17 bottle £204 dozen

NEW Domaine Joseph Burrier, Morgon Grand Cras 2015Cras’s clay soil avoided stress to the vine, so this is one of the least extreme Burrier 2015s. Rich and full with a caressing velvety texture. Now to 2030. 14% ref BC-BJ7071 £14.95 bottle £179 dozen

NEW Domaine Joseph Burrier, Chiroubles Saint-Roch 2015Saved by the extreme altitude, 510m, this has retained a lovely floral aroma and flavour despite 14% alcohol. Now to 2025. ref BC-BJ7081 £14.95 bottle £179 dozen

Château de Beauregard, Fleurie Poncié 2015From vines planted in the 1950s relatively high up with deep root systems. Fine and floral with hints of Burgundian flavours in the black-cherry spectrum. Now to 2025. 14% ref BC-BJ7111 £14.95 bottle £179 dozen

Half bottle of Château de Beauregard, Fleurie Poncié 2015ref BC-BJ7112 £8.95 bottle £107 dozen

NEW Château de Beauregard, Moulin-à-Vent 2015Made from 60-year-old vines at the bottom of the slope, near Romanèche-Thorins, this is a big, broad, almost plummy wine with an almond top note. Now to 2028. 14.5% ref BC-BJ7121 £16 bottle £192 dozen

Château de Beauregard, Fleurie Colonies de Rochegrès 2015 Rochegrès is an older vineyard, planted in the 1940s within the Poncié lieu-dit, producing a wine with the same family resemblance but even more intense and perfumed. Now to 2028. 14% ref BC-BJ7131 £17 bottle £204 dozen Château de Beauregard, Moulin-à-Vent Clos des Pérelles 2015 After the Beauvernay, this is perhaps the richest of the range. When replanting, they took cuttings from the vines in the Clos des Pérelles as they produce tiny berries of unusual concentration and perfume. The blackish clay soils retained water so the vines avoided water stress and ripening carried on uninterrupted. This is almost like a grenache vin-doux-naturel. Sweet, round and seductive. Now to 2030. 14.5% ref BC-BJ7141 £18 bottle £216 dozen

FRÉDÉRIC BURRIER: EXTRAORDINARILY OPULENT WINESFrédéric Burrier is the winemaker at Château de Beauregard and the négociant Maison Joseph Burrier, which have been in the Burrier family for six generations. He has produced an amazing range of powerful wines which may prove to be some of the most long lived in recent memory. I have tasted a number of wines from hot Beaujolais vintages, including 2009 and 2003, and the 2015s have a far greater balance and keeping potential.

The hot, windy weather evaporated the water concentrating the sugars and ensuring the wines retained freshness. Frédéric avoided the extraction of rough dry tannins and finished fermentations in barrel to get a better integration of wood and fruit. They are matured in 228-litre barrels for 10–14 months, but never taste of oak. The results are massive but gentle, sweet-tasting wines. The finer wines are quite pinot-like while the powerful ones taste like grenache.

The Society’s Exhibition Fleurie 2015Fleurie performed well in the 2015 vintage, thanks partly to its altitude. This is a blend of three wines made with Jean-Marc Darbon at Aujoux. It has lovely intense aromas, characteristically sensuous fruit and a creamy palate which reflects the ripeness of the vintage, yet finishes with lift and floral freshness. 13.5% ref BC-BJ6831 £9.50 bottle £114 dozen

Stéphane Aviron, Domaine de la Madrière, Fleurie La Madone Vieilles Vignes 2015Tasting the fruit of the younger and older vines, it was clear the older vines had better resisted the heat. We chose a barrel of old-vine fruit and had it bottled for us. From a high, cool part of La Madone vineyard, whose chapel towers above the village of Fleurie. 12.5% ref BC-BJ6851 £9.50 bottle £114 dozen

We have carefully selected a range of gorgeous wines made in Beaujolais in 2015. This is a very ripe and seductive vintage, indeed so ripe that some wines have a southern Rhône grenache-like power and flavour.

Beaujolais was one of the warmest regions of France in the hot 2015 vintage, with less rain and higher temperatures than Burgundy, for example. This has resulted in a range of styles according to when the grapes were picked, how the terroir resisted the heat and how the wines were made. In the cellar the right method was to reduce the extraction to preserve fruit and avoid dry tannins.

Not all producers made attractive wines and so I have made a severe selection of what I consider to be the

best, which I have divided into three categories of ascending power and concentration.

The first group are all recognisably Beaujolais but in a riper and more deeply-coloured style than usual. Then we focus on the more powerful wines that start to take on an amalgam of gamay and the grenache-based wines of the southern Rhône. Finally, we shine a light on the extraordinarily opulent wines of Frédéric Burrier at Domaine Joseph Burrier and Château de Beauregard with a special mixed case.

Domaine Jean-Marc Burgaud, Morgon Côte du Py 2015A triumph of terroir over vintage. The 2015 is richer than usual but retains its identity. Côte du Py is situated on a plateau on top of a hill and its soil is not granite but schist. It produces wines which combine controlled power and minerality in an original way, and the overall effect is of intensity and elegance even in 2015. Now to 2025. 14% ref BC-BJ7161 £14.50 bottle £174 dozen

Château Thivin, Côte de Brouilly Les Sept Vignes 2015For me there is a considerable affinity between the terroir of Morgon Côte de Py and Côte de Brouilly. Both have similar diorite and schist soils with an impressive minerality which lends them a vibrant energy and freshness to offset the heat of the vintage. Château Thivin is a little riper and more richly textured than usual but retains its freshness and minerality. Now to 2021. 13.5% ref BC-BJ7171 £14.95 bottle £179 dozen

To order thewinesociety.com/beaujolais 01438 741177

NEW Domaine Coudert, Brouilly 2015Big, round and rich yet balanced Brouilly. A little time in an old barrel has softened and sweetened the tannins nicely. Now to 2022. 13% ref BC-BJ7051 £10.95 bottle £131 dozen

NEW Jean-Paul Brun, Terres Dorées Beaujolais L’Ancien 2015From the south of the region, this has a freshness that belies the heat of the year. Now to 2020. 12.5% ref BC-BJ7011 £11.50 bottle £138 dozen

NEW Stéphane Aviron, Moulin-à-Vent 2015Excellent, powerful structured, black-fruited gamay, matured in wood to soften the tannins. This is a grand Moulin-à-Vent. Now to 2021. 12.5% ref BC-BJ6871 £11.50 bottle £138 dozen

Certain growers picked early, in the last days of August or early September, or benefited from the effects of altitude, which offset the heat. Their wines are deeper in colour and a little richer than a normal year but still ostensibly Beaujolais, albeit more powerful than normal.

NEW Domaine du Pressoir Fleuri, Chiroubles 2015High-altitude Chiroubles produced lovely bright, sappy gamay in 2015. This is ripe but still refreshing. 13% ref BC-BJ6961 £8.95 bottle £107 dozen

Domaine des Côteaux de Font de Curé, Brouilly 2015From a high-altitude vineyard, this tastes more like a Côte de Brouilly. It has ripe black-cherry fruit and good structure from this concentrated vintage, but also a refreshing lift and energy. Very successful, and well priced. 13% ref BC-BJ6921 £8.95 bottle £107 dozen

NEW Domaine des Grands Rouvres, Chénas 2015This stood out for its balance on two occasions in a big line-up of wines. It is ripe yet has lovely vibrant fruit too. 13% ref BC-BJ6941 £8.95 bottle £107 dozen

The Society’s Exhibition Côte de Brouilly 2015Côte de Brouilly is a hill with vineyards at all points of the compass so can produce wines of different levels of ripeness, an advantage in this warm year. This is a blend of two elements that captures both the ripeness of the vintage and the characteristic grip and freshness of the cru. 13.5% ref BC-BJ6841 £9.50 bottle £114 dozen

Domaine du Moulin d’Eole, Chiroubles 2015Bright, fresh sappy Chiroubles from vineyards at 350m altitude. Fermented and aged in concrete cuves. 13.5% ref BC-BJ6971 £9.50 bottle £114 dozen

RIPE AND SEDUCTIVE

These wines are richer than a normal year but are balanced, wearing the extra power and concentration lightly. Flavours and palate weights mix the characteristics of Beaujolais and gamay with grenache to a lesser or greater extent. Domaine du Carjot’s Juliénas Les Capitans was a standout wine, as soon as I tasted it I realised it was special. Structured crus like Moulin-à-Vent have the broad shoulders to support the ripe, dense fruit. Certain clay-rich soils with good water reserves, Morgon Cras for example, resisted the heat well. Good vignerons who look after their vineyard tend to have vines with deep and extensive root systems which cope well with lack of water. Frédéric Montangeron, Jean-Marc Burgaud, Alain Coudert of Roilette and Philippe Guérin of Moulin d’Eole all fit that bill.

NEW Domaine du Carjot, Juliénas Les Capitans 2015In a big comparative tasting this stood out as one of the stars. It has the density and weight of the vintage, but wears it lightly. The black fruit is very ripe but not over the top. Indeed the secret is its hidden underlying structure, whose tannin and acidity is proportionate to the opulence of its fruit. Now to 2020. 14% ref BC-BJ6931 £9.50 bottle £114 dozen

Domaine Montangeron, Fleurie 2015Midway down the slope, Montangeron has slightly richer soils, more water retentive than the sandier granites at the top of the slope. Fuller and slightly plummier in character than usual, but nevertheless attractive and not heavy. Now to 2021. 14% ref BC-BJ7041 £10.50 bottle £126 dozen

Domaine du Moulin d’Eole, Moulin-à-Vent Les Thorins 2015Rich, ample, generous Moulin-à-Vent matured in concrete vats. Powerful yet succulent. Now to 2023. 13.5% ref BC-BJ6981 £10.50 bottle £126 dozen

TO ORDER01438 741177

NEW Domaine Coudert, Clos de la Roilette Fleurie 2015Wonderful vineyard bordering Moulin-à-Vent half way down the slope. It has the perfume of a Fleurie and the body of a Moulin-à-Vent. Now to 2020. 13% ref BC-BJ7031 £11.95 bottle £143 dozen

Domaine Jean-Marc Burgaud, Régnié Vallières 2015Jean-Marc Burgaud is an intelligent grower who extracted much less in 2015 and is able to produce a richer Beaujolais than normal, but not jammy or raisiny. Now to 2020. 13.5% ref BC-BJ7181 £12.50 bottle £150 dozen

NEW Domaine Jean-Marc Burgaud, Morgon Grand Cras 2015Clay soils supplied water to the vine in the hot 2015, prevented water stress and contributed a full, broad structure to support the ripe, luscious fruit. Now to 2023. 14% ref BC-BJ7191 £12.95 bottle £155 dozen

NEW Joseph Burrier, Juliénas Beauvernay 2015The soils here are grey, rocky and poor. Just 17.5hl/ha ripened to a grenache-like sweetness. Smooth, round and opulent. Extraordinary.
