mixdown 228 electric guitar and bass special

APRIL 2013 NO. 228 MIXDOWN PG. 35 RECOMMENDED FOR: Progressive rock shredders, Dream Theater fans and anyone who requires a high-performance guitar for advanced techniques. SOUND/TONE/VERSATILITY: This guitar definitely leans towards the heavier side of the rock spectrum, capable of vocal lead tones, thick power chords, singing neck pickup sustain and jangly chords. It’s a modern, rather than vintage sound, so keep that in mind. PLAYABILITY: Exceptional to play, with the design taking many cues from Dream Theater guitarist John Petrucci’s signature Ernie Ball Music Man line, including the comfy forearm cut. CONSTRUCTION: The build quality of the Sterling brand is surprisingly high, not just ‘for the price’ but in general. The fret ends could sometimes use a little more finessing but that’s about it. OVERALL: A worthy high-performance shred machine for those who like to explore the outer reaches of their technique, whether it be on Dream Theater material or their own compositions. RECOMMENDED FOR: Metal, rock, heavier styles. Players looking for a locking tremolo equipped guitar with a slim neck. SOUND/TONE/VERSATILITY: All shred the EMG 60 and 81 humbuckers thicken things up for open clean tones or ballsy overdrive sounds. As a rock, metal, industrial kinda guitar it’s definitely got things covered. The kill switch is a cool added feature albeit one that perhaps shouldn’t be overused! PLAYABILITY: Ibanez have used their Wizard neck for the RGIR20E and it plays with super quick precision. An easy guitar to get around the 3 position pickup switch and kill switch are straight ahead too. If you haven’t played a locking trem guitar it might take a little getting acquainted with, but after that you’re on your way to whammy bar city! CONSTRUCTION: Made in Indonesia the RGIR20E looks great. The finish is well done and the whole package is clean and understated. The black is dark and sinister with minimal controls and glitz. A little fret love could be of use on this one but otherwise a solid guitar. OVERALL: Ibanez have had much success with their RG guitars and with this line providing some extra options at a lower price it’ll no doubt continue to spread their name. RECOMMENDED FOR: Beginner to intermediate rockers, or semi-pros looking for a decent axe on a budget to upgrade or as a backup or ‘around-the-house’ guitar. SOUND/TONE/VERSATILITY: The stock pickups are a little warmer- sounding than you might expect, which makes them good for heavy rock rhythm and blues lead, but a pickup upgrade will take advantage of the impressive unplugged tone. PLAYABILITY: This is a very playable little axe, and it certainly feels reminiscent of the Ernie Ball Music Man model that inspired it. CONSTRUCTION: Although these models come in at a very wallet-friendly price, the construction quality is a lot higher than you might expect for the cash. Definitely the kind of guitar you can begin learning on and then keep throughout your playing life. OVERALL: A really great beginner’s axe which captures the general feel and vibe of Ernie Ball Music Man instruments. But also a worthy instrument for more experienced players too. RECOMMENDED FOR: Jazz, Blues, Rock, Fusion, Funk. Players after a hollow body archtop guitar at non astronomical prices. SOUND/TONE/VERSATILITY: Woody and warm but also clean and funky with plenty of attack you can get the traditional super thick jazz tone but also open it up for some funkier mid tones. It’s also very responsive and great at handling the nuances of intricate chord voicings or lead lines. PLAYABILITY: I love the feel of the AF155 - big, solid and round yet still easy to get around. CONSTRUCTION: A great looking guitar, Ibanez have really gone for gold with a classy flamed maple top, gold hardware, pearl/abalone inlays, clean binding and an ebony fingerboard. Classy and refined but not just a guitar to keep in the lounge room. OVERALL: Great to see the Ibanez legacy of archtop guitars continuing and the AF155 shows that you can get a great playing and looking hollow body for a decent price. Big and full through to middy, brighter funky tones it’s the kind of guitar that makes you play and think a little differently. A great axe for the money, with an included hardcase. PG. 36 MIXDOWN NO. 228 APRIL 2013

RECOMMENDED FOR: Rock, heavier styles, blues, pop, country.

SOUND/TONE/VERSATILITY: On the neck pickup you’ll have fat, round clean tones with good mids and low end. Flick to the bridge and you get that brighter punch for ripping out lead lines or dirty riffs. Mahogany neck and body and Wilkinson parts and pickups do the job for a range of solid tones to cover quite a few styles.

PLAYABILITY: The deep cutaway and sleekish neck give you access to the entire fretboard and as a vol/tone setup for each pickup and 3 way selector it’s an easy guitar to get your head around.

CONSTRUCTION: There’s no hiding from the VS6’s infl uences and it defi nitely looks, feels and sounds the part.

OVERALL: Vintage are covering all the bases with their range of guitars and VS6 does a decent job of covering the double cut styled model. Pull out your best AC/DC licks and get ready to rock or sit back on some bluesy rhythms. You could even raise the action a little and pull out some Trucks styled slide - whatever the setting the VS6 is a good guitar for the money.

RECOMMENDED FOR: Country, rock, pop, funk, blues, jazz. Players looking for an affordable priced T style guitar.

SOUND/TONE/VERSATILITY: Classic smooth, round tones on the neck or twang in the bridge position. Great for a range of styles the V52 sounds good and with the Wilkinson hardware and pickups you get a functional and reliable brand name too.

PLAYABILITY: With plenty of classic T tones available and an easy to play neck the V52 is a straight forward guitar to get around.

CONSTRUCTION: Good quality Wilkinson hardware and solid Alder and Maple for the body and neck. The relic/distressed fi nish is perhaps a little on the extreme side with the neck looking a little manufactured. Nonetheless a classic, vintage looking guitar that opens the Relic door to more players thanks to its price.

OVERALL: A nice priced relic T style, this particular version in that classic Butterscotch and black guard look. Ready to play and offers traditional tones that won’t hurt your bank balance.

RECOMMENDED FOR: Rock, Indie, Blues, Metal, Pop, Alternative, Jazz. Beginners through to pros or those wanting a solid playing LP guitar at a good price.

SOUND/TONE/VERSATILITY: Fat, clear tones on the neck pickup through to brighter sounds with bite on the neck and some nice combinations in between the ALS48 does the LP thing well with the stock pickups sounding quite decent. Classic tones galore here.

PLAYABILITY: I really like the feel of the last few Tokai’s I’ve played and this ALS48 is no exception. A straight ahead LP guitar that performs well.

CONSTRUCTION: The Tokai attention to detail is again in place here with a slick looking guitar. This particular ALS48 is an MBB model which features a matt black fi nish - a nice addition to the line and a cool look for those wanting a different, darker vibe in an LP.

OVERALL: Tokai seem to be onto a winner here with the ALS48 playing as well as many much higher priced similar guitars. The intonation was good, tuning seemed strong and there’s a host of colour and fi nish options too - a great LP styled guitar for the price.

RECOMMENDED FOR: Rock, metal, pop, jazz, blues, studio, live. Players after an LP styled guitar at a more affordable price.

SOUND/TONE/VERSATILITY: Fat humbucker tones for rock and blues with clarity and bottom end on the neck or brighter and with some added edge on the neck. Mahogany and a Maple veneer give the guitar some nice body and volume too.

PLAYABILITY: As far as an LP styled guitar goes the V100 is on the lighter side and felt comfy to play sitting or standing. The range of tones make it handy for a variety of styles.

CONSTRUCTION: Vintage guitars enjoy being able to offer a good playing guitar at a low price and the V100 (this particular model a GT - Gold Top) looked great and felt fi ne. OVERALL: It’s a classic look and the Vintage GT does it justice. As a guitar it fi ts it into a lot of musical settings and at this price it can be a great option for a beginner or someone wanting an LP or dual humbucker guitar without having to fork out big bucks.

RECOMMENDED FOR: Rock, Indie, Blues, Alternative. Players wanting the vintage offset J or M type shape with a Bigsby.

SOUND/TONE/VERSATILITY: An interesting mix of tones the AJG-88 features two Made In Japan Vintage PAF styled humbuckers that can do the fat, clean tone thing or get brighter and edgy in the bridge. Jangly chords, smooth lines and fat riffs are all within this guitar’s tonal capabilities.

PLAYABILITY: With its mix of tones and comfy medium neck it’s got no problems on the playability/usability front. A different beast to the typical LP double humbucker type guitar the AJG-88 defi nitely has a place for those wanting extra tonal options. CONSTRUCTION: Also coming in a Sunburst this ‘Old Lake Placid Blue’ example really looked the goods with the matching headstock keeping the vintage fl avour but adding some extra vibe. As a player the AJG-88 felt solid and the Bigsby seemed reliable and stable.

OVERALL: Covering even more ground in the Tokai line the AJG-88 plays nicely, sounds good and touches on additional tonal ground. A nice option for players looking for something different in a dual humbucker guitar plus it comes with a funky tweed hardcase, rad!

RECOMMENDED FOR: Rock, pop, funk, blues, jazz. Pros or anyone wanting a handmade solid body double cut with beautiful attention to detail.

SOUND/TONE/VERSATILITY: A double cut with humbuckers the DC Standard has a real warmth and clarity to it going from clean and full to more pronounced with distorted tones. The Adeson humbuckers also have some extra switching options increasing the available tones you can shred with.

PLAYABILITY: Feeling smooth and comfortable you can feel the time and effort put into the build. The neck is slick but chunky (which I love!), so it gives you something to hold onto but still lets you get around without any probs.

CONSTRUCTION: A combination of Brazilian Mahogany, American fl amed Maple, Bolivian Rosewood and Macassar Ebony the Double Cut Standard looks beautiful. The detail and construction is top notch and the addition of Sperzel locking tuners and a Gotoh wraparound bridge add function and a classy look to the guitar.

OVERALL: Diquattro really put together a beautiful instrument with the Double Cut Standard. Modern looking and featuring some nice switching options it offers a range of tones from classics through to modern day. If handmade and Australian is your thing you should check out Diquattro.

APRIL 2013 NO. 228 MIXDOWN PG. 37

RECOMMENDED FOR: Rock, indie, blues. Those wanting something a little different that leans a little towards the rockier side of things.

SOUND/TONE/VERSATILITY: Another interesting design from Yamaha - his time a little more rock and seemingly straight ahead. Delve a little further into the single pickup design and it’s actually a Trembucker/P Rails pickup which gives you 3 settings - full humbucker, P90 and just the rails. Ballsy and thick with a tough edge.

PLAYABILITY: A straight up playing double cutaway styled body and easy on the hands neck makes the guitar a breeze to get around. The single pickup and 3 way switch shouldn’t cause any headaches either.

CONSTRUCTION: Yamaha build quality and consistency mean the PAC510V feels good and looks great. Clean edges, nice intonation and setup and solid parts give you the feeling that the guitar is going to last.

OVERALL: Yamaha seem happy to stretch the norm a little in offering plenty of variation to their staple Pacifi ca models. The PAC510V might be just the ticket if you’re looking for something a little different.

RECOMMENDED FOR: Rock, pop, funk. Beginners through to serious players. Guitarists looking for an S style alternative with a slick, comfy neck and plenty of tonal variation.

SOUND/TONE/VERSATILITY: Single coils in the neck and middle and a humbucker in the bridge give you the ability to fatten things up a little and you can also use the coil tap for more traditional sounds. I could defi nitely see the 212 VFM sitting in a range of styles.

PLAYABILITY: Plenty of options here but nothing to distract you from the fact that it’s a nice playing, lighter weighted guitar.

CONSTRUCTION: I like the Yamaha range of styles and this fl amed body and matching painted headstock really look great. A modern take on a traditional style the 212VFM seriously looks like a guitar worth double the price. OVERALL: More along the modern super strat style but not in a cheesy 80s way. Comfy, light and easy to play with a great range of tones thanks to the single coils and humbucker combo. Tasteful and good looking the 212VFM is a solid axe at a great price.

RECOMMENDED FOR: Rock, metal, pop, fusion, funk. Solid body players looking for a modern styled electric.

SOUND/TONE/VERSATILITY: Precise and full for cleaner tones with a modern edge or thick darker sounds with bite on the bridge pickup and a little distortion. The combination of Mahogany, Maple and Seymour Duncan Jazz and Jeff Beck pickups give you plenty of tonal options.

PLAYABILITY: A slick guitar that feels great. Good access to the higher registers and a variety of tones to suit a range of musical styles. Easy to play and equipped with high quality hardware and parts.

CONSTRUCTION: Beautifully fi nished with great attention to detail and solid, usable features. I love the carved style top and the wide but thin neck look fi ller and play super well. The Schaller tuners and Floyd Rose bridge hold up well for good tuning too.

OVERALL: This particular model is aimed slightly more towards the rock and heavier crowd but is a really versatile guitar (plus they make a range of other models) that oozes quality. A super serious guitar from this Polish maker, if you haven’t heard of the Mayones brand they are defi nitely worth checking out!

RECOMMENDED FOR: Players looking for an S style guitar with a difference. Conversely humbucker guys might like the variation on their usual shape. Beginners, bedroom bashers, serious players, rock, country, pop, funk.

SOUND/TONE/VERSATILITY: Quite resonant acoustically the combination of a P90 in the neck and Humbucker in the bridge give you an interesting array of tones. Fat and thick or open and warm it’s a nice change from single coils.

PLAYABILITY: The neck is slick, the overall guitar is nice and light and the P90, humbucker and 3 way switch make for quite a bit of tonal variety. Easy to play and easy to navigate tone wise.

CONSTRUCTION: Neat and clean in the typical Yamaha way the 311H adds a little extra individuality to the Pacifi ca line with its pickup choice, string through body hardtail design and funky scratch plate.

OVERALL: Solid playing I like the 311H’s change from the normal single coil setup you’d see on this styled guitar. Easy playing and well made it’s a solid axe for the coin too.

RECOMMENDED FOR: Rock, pop, funk, metal, blues, just about anything really. Players looking for a different take on the humbucker double cutaway solid body electric.

SOUND/TONE/VERSATILITY: Tregan have opted for a chambered Mahogany body with fl amed maple top on the Signature Series and the result is a clear, open tone with plenty of sustain. A rounded, full sound there’s no harsh top end and the three humbucker design allows you much tonal variation. At home with both clean sounds and distortion it is a versatile guitar that could cover a lot of ground musically.

PLAYABILITY: Thanks to its 3 pickup design and chambered body it can do the full, warm bodied tones but then rip into gear for rock and heavy sounds. CONSTRUCTION: Designed in the USA and made in Korea the looks and fi nish of the Shaman Sig II are of a good standard and the fl ame maple top works well with the slightly quirky body shape. OVERALL: The Shaman Sig II overlaps across a few musical genres and thanks to its price is going to be accessible to a lot of players. A cool take on the modern double cut.

RECOMMENDED FOR: Rock, metal, industrial, indie, heavier styles. Pros, serious players, intermediate, anyone wanting a high quality handmade shredder.

SOUND/TONE/VERSATILITY: With a decidedly modern edge the Regius 6 can do crisp cleans or more powerful dirty tones with a little gain thrown into the mix. Seymour Duncan Blackouts are the pickups of choice for the this Regius 6 and the woods used in the body and neck add for plenty of sustain and body to your tone. Extra wood, pickup combinations are available too if you want to experiment a little.

PLAYABILITY: The neck through body design is comfy and fast for good access all over the fretboard which is stellar. This coupled with the fl at top body really feels and looks slick. CONSTRUCTION: More quality work from Poland here with a killer understated fi nish. Clean edges, nice touches and a slick all round package. Plus I like the recessed volume and tone knobs!

OVERALL: I really dig the reserved yet dark and mysterious vibe of this Regius 6. Hip and unassuming it can seriously arc up when needed and covers quite a bit of territory tone wise. Another beauty of an axe from Mayones.

PG . 38 MIXDOWN NO. 228 APRIL 2013

RECOMMENDED FOR: Beginners, weekend warriors, those on a budget and guitar players who need a bass for the occasional homemade track.

SOUND/TONE/VERSATILITY: This bass already sounds really nice when you play it unplugged, and this natural tone comes across loud and clear through an amp. It sounds natural and full, and the bass and treble boost/cut pots give it the flexibility to go from rock to funk to R&B and to dub easily.

PLAYABILITY: Playability is exceptional, which isn’t always easy to achieve on an entry-level bass.

CONSTRUCTION: The fret ends are finished surprisingly well - much better than you’d expect at this price. This certainly helps playability.

OVERALL: The SUB Ray 4 is a far better bass than you would expect at this price range, especially in playability and construction. The sounds, too, are better than you could honestly expect at this price.

RECOMMENDED FOR: Anyone who needs a wide range of tones with a minimum of fuss - especially those of us who want active control but without the fiddly aspect of concentric pots.

SOUND/TONE/VERSATILITY: The three-band EQ features boost/cut control for the treble, midrange and bass, and this makes it a really great all-purpose bass for any genre you throw at it, from funk to death metal.

PLAYABILITY: The playability of the Ray34 is flawless, with easy accessibility to every fret even at the lowest position where many C-shaped necks tend to feel a little clammy. And the EQ is really easy to work with.

CONSTRUCTION: The frets are well polished, clipped and lightly shaped, and the C-like neck shape is comfortable from a finishing perspective as well as an ergonomic one.

OVERALL: A fine alternative for those of us who can’t afford a Music Man StingRay - it looks the part, sounds the part and is certainly built to a high enough level of quality to take on tour.

RECOMMENDED FOR: Rock, blues, funk, pop, country. Live, studio, beginners through to amateurs. Anyone looking for a slight variation on that classic S shape. SOUND/TONE/VERSATILITY: Featuring a Seymour Duncan SP90-1N and Seymour Duncan Custom V, it’s a little different to the single coil Pacifica models but can really scream or break up for bluesy rock tones and still handle the subtle stuff too. The slimmer neck is easy to get around and helps for those higher register lines.

PLAYABILITY: A nice feeling guitar the PAC611 is easy to play and has quite the range of tones so no probs with usability here!

CONSTRUCTION: Alder body, Maple neck, Rosewood Fingerboard, Hardtail bridge with Graph Tech string saver saddles and Grover locking tuners. Well designed, made and put together.

OVERALL: Touted as today’s embodiment of the Pacifica concept the PAC611HFM is one nice guitar. Influenced in part by the 90s in its design, looks and feel but capable of tones that span rock, blues, funk, country and more.

RECOMMENDED FOR: Country, Rock, Pop, Blues. Live or studio for guys wanting to add some extra deep tonal ranges to their palette.

SOUND/TONE/VERSATILITY: Harking back to the original Danelectro guitars the DK56 gives you the lower range of a baritone guitar, handy for swampy lead lines or adding another flavour to your playing or recording. Combining with the deeper range the lipstick styled single coil pickups make for a big tone that have great cut in the mix and stay quite clear.

PLAYABILITY: Playing like a standard 6 string means it’s easy to get around and the varied range opens up a whole new world of ideas and creativity.

CONSTRUCTION: Danelectro have nailed the looks with its curved body shape, distinctive headstock and logo and retro looking hardware. Feel wise the DK56 played nicely and seemed solid and stable.

OVERALL: I wouldn’t’ imagine the DK56 would be your main axe but it could definitely become an inexpensive addition to your lineup when you need something different tone and sound wise. Retro looking and retro sounding this killer little number is one to keep an eye out for.

RECOMMENDED FOR: Rock, pop, country, studio, live. Anyone interested in a hollow body 335 styled electric 12 string on the lower price side of things.

SOUND/TONE/VERSATILITY: I like the mix of the 335 styled guitar and 12 string setup with the hollow-body design soaking up some of the brighter top end for a slightly warmer and rounder tone.

PLAYABILITY: Can add some width to a guitar track or make a feature out of a single note line. There are no real rules regarding the 12 string but as a nice player the VSA535 12 string can be slotted in wherever you think it’s appropriate.

CONSTRUCTION: Feels solid and gig worthy. The true test of a twelve is the tuning stability and the VSA535 seemed to do a more than decent job. With Wilkinson hardware on-board Vintage are off to a good start.

OVERALL: You don’t see a lot of 12 strings and you don’t see many semi-acoustic 12 strings of the hollow body 335 variety. For an inexpensive guitar that covers a few bases and can add contrast and colour to your existing collection the VSA535 12 string is worth a look.

RECOMMENDED FOR: Rock, Pop, Country, Folk. Strummers, pickers, players wanting that double guitar, full bodied sound both live and in the studio.

SOUND/TONE/VERSATILITY: As an electric 12 you get a full, big sound with plenty of zing. It’s the added octaves and unison notes that really fill the sound and give it extra sparkle - there’s still plenty of body and warmth too. Amplified you’ll get a sparkly twang from the Danelectro lipstick pickups.

PLAYABILITY: You’ll be surprised how easy it is to play a 12 string with the DC 12. The fact that it’s an electric body (not a jumbo acoustic) means you can wrap around it easily enough and after a little time getting acquainted you’ll be pulling out your favourite Byrds licks with ease.

CONSTRUCTION: Whilst staying true to the original look seems the main aim the DC12 still feels solid enough and does a good job for an electric 12 at its price point.

OVERALL: Danelectro definitely have their own thing going on and it’s nice to see an electric 12 string on the market that won’t break the bank.

RECOMMENDED FOR: Rock, Indie, Metal, Pop, Alternative.

SOUND/TONE/VERSATILITY: A favourite of the punk rock crowd the TB48 has that bobbly, edgy tone down pat. For pumping out rock and roll lines, fast punk runs or fatter, rounder open lines you get plenty of body and volume.

PLAYABILITY: On the bigger side of things the T-Bird does take a little getting used to with its size, weight and feel. With its big headstock and angled body the balance can go either way sitting or standing but give yourself some time and you’ll be bashing out quaver lines with a lick like nobody’s business.

CONSTRUCTION: Tough, solid, clean edges and good looking it seems to be another ripper from Tokai.

OVERALL: A great looking and playing take on that classic T-Bird design at a nice price. In regards to the size and feel it mightn’t be the best bet for an absolute beginner but can defi nitely handle any level of player if it’s what you’re looking for. And whilst I see it more appealing to rock players it can be whatever you want it to be!

RECOMMENDED FOR: Rock, pop, funk, blues. Beginners to intermediate players or anyone looking for a solid modern looking 4 string electric bass with a slim neck.

SOUND/TONE/VERSATILITY: Split coils in the neck and a single coil in the bridge give you a range of usable tones for clear and warm through to grindier, edgy bridge sounds.

PLAYABILITY: Yamaha have really gone for the slim neck on the RBX270J which could be a godsend for those with a limited reach. As a whole the bass is quite light so it shouldn’t be drain playing standing up or sitting and the extended fretboard and easy access give you the range to cover extra high notes too.

CONSTRUCTION: A range of colours are on offer and the solid alder body and maple neck feel strong and tough.

OVERALL: Clean and neat it’s a straight up 4 string bass that offers quite a lot for its price tag. Indeed I’ve seen many RBX270J’s as beginner basses (great for those with smaller hands or needing some extra allowance to get around the fretboard) and with more advanced players wanting a comfy bass that is easy to play.

RECOMMENDED FOR: Rock, pop, funk, blues. Beginners through to pros needing a 4 string electric with a bit of attitude.

SOUND/TONE/VERSATILITY: Basswood body and maple bolt on neck with a rosewood fi ngerboard here. Plenty of classic tones on offer thanks to the split coil neck pickup and single coil in the bridge. Anything from rounder, bobbly vintage funky sounds through to sharper rock and metal sounds on the neck (especially with a pick!!).

PLAYABILITY: A straight up four string that feels good. Easy to get a tone out of and good feel all over the fretboard. I really like the feel of the slightly thicker body too.

CONSTRUCTION: The construction seems solid with clean joints and edges. Grover tuners are a nice touch and the looks good and adds to the funky modern vibe.

OVERALL: Tregan might not be a name that you’re super familiar with but keep an eye out for this USA designed brand. Some interesting takes on classic shapes that will appeal to a range of players. I could see the Shaman sitting in plenty of music settings and the added contour and spikiness of this model could be just the ticket for the rock/metal guys looking for something new!

RECOMMENDED FOR: Rock, punk, pop, blues. Players wanting a retro styled bass for a little less coin. SOUND/TONE/VERSATILITY: Proving popular with 50s, 60s, 70s and modern day players alike the 4003 lies primarily in the more jangly and edgy rock camp but the double mini hums have some scope for rounder, warm tones and cleaner bluesy, soul type tones.

PLAYABILITY: Obviously modeled on the Ric look, the Rebelrocker 4003 has great access to the top register thanks to its deep cutaway look and the neck is sleek with a smooth body joint making it an easy bass to play.

CONSTRUCTION: In keeping with its origins the 4003 looks great. The Fireglow fi nish is my personal favourite but it’s also available in Black and White if you prefer. Whilst some costs might be reduced in the production of the Rebelrocker it doesn’t make it an inferior product and I found it to be quite the player for the cost. OVERALL: A look that you’ve always wanted but never had the cash to purchase? The Rebelrocker 4003 might be the answer. Good looking, good range of retro tones and all in a solid package for the price - sweet!

RECOMMENDED FOR: Blues, funk, rock, pop. Anyone after a vintage looking bass with a feel and tone to match.

SOUND/TONE/VERSATILITY: Yamaha’s split single and Bar single pickups give a clear, round tone that can go from subtle to rumbly and dark. I could see the BB424X pumping out rock and roll quaver note lines, bobbly blues runs or fat, round soul licks with ease.

PLAYABILITY: 21 frets and deep cutaways give you good access to the entire fretboard and whilst the body is on the bigger side of things it’s still an easy bass to play both sitting and standing.

CONSTRUCTION: Retro and vintage in looks Yamaha still keep the construction up to date with solid hardware and design for maximum life and build quality.

OVERALL: It really does hang with the classic looking basses, holding its own on the tone front. Although not your standard twin pickup design the BB424X offers a nice range of sounds in a funky old school package.
