SYSTEM OVERVIEW

The MIT-SCAN2-BT sensor system provides nondestructive testing of dowel bars in plain concrete pavements. Using a rail-gliding measuring carriage, all deviations of bar positions from the specified position can be determined quickly, precisely and cost-effectively.

Concrete covering, translations, deviations, skew and tilt from the prescribed orientation of the dowel and tie bars can be determined within tenths of an inch precision.

PRINCIPLES OF THE TECHNOLOGY

• The device functions according to the principles of pulse-induction. Its transmitter sends a weak, pulsating magnetic signal.

• The magnetic field is harmless to the surrounding area and does not affect the physical properties of the dowels or of the concrete.

• Similarly Concrete properties do not affect the signal or results (i.e. amount of moisture in the concrete).

PRINCIPLES OF THE TECHNOLOGY

• When the magnetic field comes into contact with metallic objects, it induces eddy currents inside of them. The currents cause magnetic response signals and these magnetic signals are then measured by receivers inside the testing device, and evaluated.

• The measured values are recorded every 20 milliseconds. They are collected in large quantities for a mathematical evaluation.

• Remove any debris, snow or ice covering the surface to be measured.

• Vehicles and Construction Equipment should not be within 6 feet and 11 feet of the measurement device.

• Operators with steel-toe shoes should remain the length of the pulling rope from the device.

• Metal in or under the concrete pavement will influence results. Such as:

ASSEMBLING THE RAIL SYSTEM

• The rail system is made out of glass fiber-reinforced plastic.

• Individual segments can be joined to reach a maximum length of 10 meters (32.8 ft), which permits a measurement across multiple lanes in one step.

• Due to the light weight of the rail system and the measuring device, the rails can lie directly upon the concrete surface while measuring curved surfaces including crowns

ASSEMBLING THE RAIL SYSTEM

• The cross-ties have a center line to be aligned with the joint and wheels at one end for easy movement to another joint when the rails are installed.

• The measuring vehicle is pulled manually by a nonmetallic cord over the rails with a speed between 10 and 20 inches per second.

MOVING THE RAIL SYSTEM

• Once Assembled, then movement from joint to joint can be done in one piece with the wheels on the cross ties.

• It is recommended that one person per 15 feet of connected rail to raise one side and move to the next joint.

PREPARATION FOR MEASUREMENT• Layout the cross-ties with the wheels on the side for the next joint and connect

• While the operator moves the measuring device on tracks along the joint, all measurement data is recorded and saved in a hand held POCKET PC (CASIO IT600 or IT800) . After the end of the joint is reached, the exact positions and alignments of the dowel bars regarding the concrete surface and the joint position are computed within seconds.

MAINTENCE & BATTERIES

Daily Checks:• Check Scanner wheels for free movement.• Check Alignment Rub Bars, rotate if necessary to maintain

centering of the Scanner in the rail system• Check Rail System for cracks, tighten locking screws make sure the

rail section ends are flush against each other. Small gaps will hang up the Scanner when pulling over them.

MAGNOPROOF

OVERVIEW• MagnoProof is used for analysis, visualization and

documentation of measurements of the MIT-SCAN2-BT device on a Desktop PC. It is specifically designed for the analysis of measurements the dowel bars compared to the planned positions.

• Reports reflecting the deviations of the actual dowel bar positions from the planned positions can be created and printed with the software MagnoProof. This post processing application permits the rapid analysis of large quantities of measurements.

• Current Software Version in use is MagnoProof 3.3 with a totally new version MagnoProof 5 just released
