Ado HuismAn - President mistrAl internAtionAlIn 1986 Ado Huisman became one of the directors of Mistral International, at the time based in Munich, Germany. During the past decades he has proven to be a true brand builder while working with brands such as Craft, Rossignol and Gaastra and in 2008 became a shareholder and Managing Director of Mistral International. In 2008 he purchased the Mistral brand and currently, he is one of the major shareholders of Mistral International, owner of the worldwide trademark Mistral and licensor of the Mistral brand.

steve West - vice President mistrAl internAtionAl Steve was windsurfing during the era when Mistral was enjoying its peak during windsurfing’s global explosion; a past professional windsurfer, paddler, author, a world authority on outrigger canoeing and stand up paddleboarding. He has been involved in board, sail, canoe and paddle design in Australia and Pacific wide. He shares the responsibility in nurturing relations between Mistral and its licensees and oversees continuity in the brands imagery and direction. He has worked in the clothing industry and owned and managed his own canoeing clothing line, which was licensed to Jerry Lopez International. His role is centred on keeping Mistral’s roots alive and well, while overseeing Mistral Red Dots activities in applying his wealth of paddling expertise in particular to MRD’s SUP program.

Mistral, founded originally in 1972, is the name associated with an entire generation of windsurfing products and innovations. It now controls, manages and services a global network of licensees, who use the Mistral name on a vast array of merchandise including the famed Club Mistral holiday watersports destinations. The company is managed from its Holland base in Wierden.

Mistral Red Dot Division was founded in order to serve the core elements of Mistral in the creation of aspirational water sports hardware, so as the Mistral name continues to forge a relationship with watersports and stay true to its roots. It is the manufacturing arm of Mistral International. It acts as an innovator and accelerator for the Mistral brand in the fast growing sport of stand up paddling (SUP) for example and in 2011, the first full range of Mistral hard board SUPs were released. MRD have since gone on to create the world’s most advanced range of inflatable SUP boards. In late 2014, Mistral Windsurfing returned to be under MRDs control.

Late in 2014 he took on this role, after having been the licensee of Mistral Windsurfing since 2009. A world class windsurfer and world speed record holder (Mistral production board) his life long experience of the industry of manufacturing techniques and sourcing, is a much needed asset in a highly competitive industry. Anders will be devoting his time to both the Mistral SUP and windsurfing lines and in continued work in R&D.

I think you will agree, that when you see all that Mistral represents and all that we are involved with, we are indeed a very dynamic forward thinking, multifaceted lifestyle company. We are unique and remain dedicated to water life and living.

Mistral is undergoing changes, being as it has become apparent that we need to reposition ourselves and begin to make it clear that when you take all that we do into consideration, we are indeed a potent force and continue to grow from strength to strength.

For those just getting to know us, we have been around a very long time, beginning in fact in the early 1970s with windsurfing as our core interest. We have since branched out into areas of licensing of product, with the finest of watch and sunglass makers, apparel, footwear, skin care products and more besides, not forgetting Club Mistral locations around the world.

With stand up paddleboarding now reaching out across the world in the spirit akin to windsurfing during the eighties, Mistral have committed themselves to this new watersports phenomenon in pursuing excellence of design, form and function in true Mistral fashion.

mistral set the tone in the development of windsurfing boards. technological innovations rapidly followed, including new materials being developed and tested. mistral turned windsurfing into an international sport and launched the mistral World cup team. the brand rapidly became synonymous with windsurfing.

Born out of a passion for wind and water, Mistral developed the innovative concept of windsurfing to extraordinary heights. Originally founded in 1972 by Peter Brockhaus, with Ernstfried Prade as designer, the brand gained immediate international recognition in 1976 with the creation of the International Mistral Class Organisation (IMCO) founded in the United Kingdom, which still survives to this day. From this year forward, Mistral could be said to have truly arrived.

an overemphasis by the industry on the elite windsurfers caused business to contract late in the 1990s. By 2002, the entire industry was adjusting its focus. Boards for experts were narrow and hard to balance.

But mistral and other companies got the message. scott see, executive director for the american Windsurfing industries association, told forbes.com that there had been an over emphasis on high performance boards and kite surfing and mistral and other companies were now focused on producing boards for beginners that were user friendly. as see put it, “some of the newer boards are so stable, you can put someone in a business suit on a board without fear of getting wet.”

in 2008, mistral split into two parts. famed windsurfer anders Bringdal was hired to restore the glory of mistral windsurfing boards and he took charge of the design and production. mistral now has a line for all levels of windsurfers as well as paddle boards and a combination windsurf/paddle/surf board.

in 2014, steve West joined mistral international. West with over 35 years of experience with the Pacific wide sport of outrigger canoeing, a two time world champion, author of over a dozen books on the subject and a one time professional windsurfer, brought a renewed focus back on the companies core interests, that of water sports.

“it was clear to me that mistral as a brand needed some help in getting back to its core, associated with the very activities which made it great, gave it structure and created its fame. suP may well be the new thing, but in truth we need to ensure we stay true to windsurfing and suP and not shy away from either.

in addition, although mistral has many interests and licensees, it’s essential we show this off to the world under one website, one magazine and one voice so as we can be recognised for the sum of our whole, not just its fragments.”

historically speaking, the first company to achieve success with windsailing boards was Windsailing international, created by hoyle schweitzer in 1968. four years later, mistral became licensed by schweitzer to make the original Windsurfer. mistral became widely recognized and extremely successful. according to Windsurfing legends, mistral, “is likely the most recognized windsurfing brand in the world.”

now head quartered in the netherlands, mistral transitioned from a company focused on manufacturing windsurfing boards to a lifestyle company offering everything from clothes to watches. mistral quickly became known for technical innovations that advanced the sport.

a number of champion windsail riders endorsed mistral in the 1970s and 1980s and became known as the “mistral dream team.” in 1985, mistral started to branch out, establishing club mistral, a string of resorts centred on windsurfing instruction and sports tourism.

Ernstfried Prade shaping the original Mistral Competition, which went on to sell 270,000 units,

the most successful windsurfing model in the history of the sport, looking alien like with beard

and goggles, still remains heavily involved with the interests of Mistral - our proverbial Godfather

and also the designer of our famous M-dot logo.

one of the beautiful things about suP-sport is the inclusiveness of male and female participation, ensuring the sport is made all the richer. mistral has always been a supporter of this inclusiveness and Jenny’s life embodies a love of the ocean, her activities defining who she is, a lifestyle reflecting the ‘mistral coastal lifestyle’ of which we are so passionate.

living in hawaii, Jenny’s father was a dedicated outrigger canoe paddler with interests in prone-paddle boarding and surfing. from his association with ocean paddling and surfing sports, mentorship followed from some of the island’s finest watermen and women and by age 8, Jenny began competitive long boarding, that is until six years ago when her father introduced her to ‘ . . . the latest thing’, stand up paddle boarding.

she has since dedicated herself to her new love of suP-sport, competing in the china uemura classic, duke’s ocean fest, surfing the nations, moloka’i to o’ahu, olukai ho’olaulea and Pops achoy contest.

“i’m a city and county lifeguard on the beach and work four or five days a week. i do a lot of swimming, running, weights and cross-fit. other than that, i stand up paddle surf a lot and try to mix it up with outrigger canoe paddling and distance runs on my stand up boards. for downwind distance runs, we usually paddle from hawaii kai to Waikiki, approximately 8 miles; otherwise i work on flat-water sprints. i’m allowed two, one hour training breaks for work, so my daily routine includes

dropping my daughter off and getting to work an hour early so i can run on the beach in the morning. then, i’ll use one of my breaks to weight train or do some other exercise and then i’ll use my other break to surf.’

Jenny has become an inspiration for other women in water sports, being already a three time nominee for ‘suP Women of the year’ by suP magazine and she is proud to join the mistral brand as an international team rider for both suP-surf and racing, which ensures that 2014 is shaping up to be a promising year for the native hawaiian resident, affectionately named, ‘Waikiki love’ who can be seen regularly suP-surfing her favorite ‘queens’ break off Waikiki Beach.

‘although i’m competitive, i think for me stand up paddling; surfing and canoe paddling define my lifestyle. my goal, ultimately, is to be able to share my love for the ocean, through these sports, not so much trying to beat the next girl. With competitions there’s always going to be somebody better and faster. that’s not the way i want to live my life, constantly trying to be better than the next competitor. i’m a mother and i work, which helps me put my life into perspective.’

Jenny’s approach to life and living, will ensure the spread of the mistral Water life and living spirit wherever she goes, both locally and internationally and we look forward to sharing inspiring imagery and stories of her activities, riding our mistral boards to new levels of enjoyment and limits!

Mistral International, recently regained acquisition and full control of it’s Windsurfing license, retaining the services of Anders Bringdal, the former licensee. This initiative was taken in order to improve logistical and administrative strength and a show of Mistral’s value upon which it places in its long heritage of its core founding sporting interest. In addition, Mistral is looking to take a lead role in assisting with the regeneration of interest in the sport of windsurfing as a whole.

We cannot overstate the importance and value we put upon our association with the sport of windsurfing and our recognition of the relevance and significance of our mistral one design program for the sport of windsurfing. founded originally in the united kingdom in 1978 the international mistral class organisation (imco) continues to play an active role in overseeing the running and administration of mistral racing.

this being stated, it is evident we need to formulate a cohesive plan with regards to how best to support and nurture the growth and renewed interest of this important race division, which has credible implications at a critical point in the history of the sport.

We intend to ensure an extensive marketing plan to draw renewed interest and focus upon this race format. essential to the process will be the extent and span of availability of the mod board for all-comers across the world, which requires improvement and expansion of suppliers.

in accordance with the requirements, mistral international will commence discussions with the iWa, isaf and imco in order to establish a competition schedule and in addition we understand the equipment must be available at competitions with charter boards to assist with encouraging and supporting competitor numbers.

central to these initiatives, we also recognize the importance of nurturing once again, a mistral one design World championship, essential to raising the profile of the class while rekindling a cornerstone aspect of our core brand equity.

We equipped the mistral kailua 11’5” with the innovative mistral all-round elastic band system. this system allows you to fix super strong rubber bands with hooks on multiple tie-down points on the board. the tractive force of these elastic bands is easily adjustable and allows you to gradually increase the intensity of your exercise, which is an essential point in any comprehensive training program.

one of our objectives, was to produce the world’s lightest inflatable board - and we succeeded and while other makers make wild claims about their boards being the lightest, the stiffest, the greatest, the fact remains ours simply are - and we should know, because we are perfectly aware of what our competitors are producing.

of course in order to achieve this, we have had to go about it a bit differently, but one thing we can say, so radical has been the project and the chasing of an ideal, that we have in fact had to create our equipe and crossover boards (crossover to WindsuP) as a limited edition series.

in the meantime, our other high quality inflatable boards such as our kailua fitness and yoga board and our adventure boards, continue to find favour the world over and there’s plenty more yet to come; indeed we are just getting warmed up. enjoy the next few pages as you walk through our world.

It all started out as a bit of fun really. The idea of an inflatable

stand up board seemed more novelty than a serious contender

for serious levels of adventure. But the truth is, the reasons

for ownership remain palpable, because they are just so

ridiculously convenient for storage and for travel and any

relative compromise in performance is out weighed by the fact,

you can be on the water most anywhere you choose. Like the

title says, ‘Free your mind and choose a destination.’

Here’s some tips.you’ll want to have a 3 piece paddle if you want to keep things cheaper for air travel - but if you have to take a longer 2 piece paddle, remember many airlines simply do not have a category for ‘paddles’ - they fall under sporting goods, so it’s our experience to call them snow-skies even if you are flying to morocco, otherwise try the category of golf clubs! if you fly with a one piece paddle remember there are length limits and you will be likely to be charged.

When using the hand pump, use straight arms (locking your elbows) using your full body weight during the inflation process. you’ll want to get to 15 psi (pounds per square inch) or 1 bar if you want to get technical. (never over inflate).

another useful reminder; air is not hard regardless of how much pressure is put into an inflatable board. therefore beware of misinformation by brands bragging of 24 psi etc - firstly you will need to pump a lot longer and harder and secondly it’s no guarantee of a stiffer board.

It’s a simple formula. If you want to design and produce winning designs, then you need to build a board around a rider to ensure that the testing and end result meets with everyone’s expectations.

Mistral Riders

ryan James started competitive swimming at the age of 4 and by 18 was in america, pursuing an elite swim scholarship. on his return to england, he developed his training to include cycling and running and started to compete in triathlons. he made the great Britain age group squad in his inaugural year of competition and turned professional in 1998.

shortly after turning professional, ryan was signed by team Bath, at the university of Bath, while also competing for the great Britain elite ironman triathlon squad. Within this squad he competed in 3 World championships (sweden, france and switzerland) and 3 national championships (highest placing 2nd). following retirement from competitive triathlon, ryan took up sprint track cycling, competing at two World master and national championships.

he turned his hand to stand up paddleboarding in april 2009 as rehabilitation for shoulder surgery (following a snowboarding crash). the surgery meant for 3 months he was not allowed to kitesurf, his other passion, so he looked for a sport where his arm wasn’t raised too high. catching the bug after just a few paddles ryan within 18 months, began his winning ways on the uk suP race circuit.

he has since gone on to dominant the uk suP race circuit, has competed at 2 Battle of the Paddle events in california with success and in 2011 he finished runner up in the 11 cities suP tour race in holland.

ryan was trained in his early suP career by red dot managing director, steve West and today they continue to paddle

together, including outrigger canoeing as cross training for suP and for the love of the sport itself. With the relationship they have nurtured, the alliance they can now form in creating board and paddle designs is indeed a great mix.

a former team rider for starboard, ryan is looking forward to working with mistral working closely on developing new hardboard designs in conjunction with steve and the mrd team and this will extend into the area of paddles. through 2015, we will see ryan representing mistral at various international races throughout europe.

Kainoa teixeira was born in hawaii and moved to Brazil when he was 3. his parents were surfers and surf school owners. he began surfing at an early age and in 2011 after winning an u16 championship suP wave contest, he met thomas kindt owner of mistral Brazil and this began a friendship. in 2012 they met again in ubatuba, where kainoa was posting the highest scores of the trials, in the Professional division at just 14 years of age. some months later, kainoa was contracted for three years by mistral Brazil. in 2013 he finished 16th in the Brazilian professional suP wave rankings and was Brazilian isuP champion and finished 3rd in the u18 suP race.

Waterman league 2014

in 2014, kainoa travelled to hawaii to participate in the first stage of the Waterman league, where he was champion under 16 “na kama kai” and finished in 17th place in the professional division. after the event, he begin workouts with athlete and shaper robin Johnston, a local of hawaii.

robin coached kainoa for several months, showing him points and techniques for big wave contests, which was of great value and importance for his professional growth. Back in Brazil,

he won the second stage of the Waterman league in the u16 category and was ranked 15th. in september in california for the 4th stage, he finished 2nd u16 resulting in 1st place in the u16 world ranking, an important title for his career.

currently kainoa, is preparing for the future with a physical trainer and nutritionist, doing functional training, psychological, pilates, jiu jitsu, muay thai, rowing and suP surfing. together with his father, he has plans in 2015, to participate in the entire World circuit, in association with the world famous legendary mistral brand.

open water and river adventure paddling is a fast growing element of the sport where participants seek moving water graded 1 - 5 on the international grading system. this varies in accordance with international ‘classes’ of water.

White water paddling is simply the decent of rapids on a stand up paddle board. the outcome being an experience shared with friends, as a group travelling and challenging oneself with each section of river undertaken.

internationally the types of rivers vary dramatically from deep, high volume runs, often found in the us and himalayas, to smaller more shallower rivers such as in the uk.the international scale of white water is from grade i to grade vi, with grade i being straight forward and near placid and grade six being at the limit of personal and technical paddling.

at present with limited development in white water suP boards, the paddler will be mainly concerned with grade 1 - 3 rivers. this however is changing slowly with the development of craft.

i was motivated by just how ridiculously light mistral’s new inflatable stand up paddleboards really are. i was a guest at mistral’s annual meeting in Bavaria and got to play around with their 2015 line up. mistral is making a serious push in the world of inflatables and the first thing i noticed was the crazy weight of their new designs. using futuristic german technology and european manufacturing, the new mistral inflatables have somehow combined light weight with extreme stiffness. these things are super rigid but still significantly lighter than the current batch of inflatable stand up paddleboards on the market.

the 11 cities is a unique race. it’s long. very long. over 200 kilometres all said and done and it’s held across five days, in five different stages. it’s like the tour de france of suP, it’s also one of the only races where you literally spend 24/7 with your fellow paddlers. apart from racing together for between 5 and 8 hours each day, most competitors stay on one of the big, old school dutch boats that follows the course.

it’s painful. you’ll hate it. you’ll love it. you’ll make great friends. lasting memories. sore muscles. Big smiles. you’ll test yourself physically. you’ll test yourself even more so mentally. oh and your hands will be full of calluses.

the 11 cities is an amazing event and one that you should definitely add to your bucket list, a crazy adventure through the beautiful countryside of the friesland province. and it’s one i can’t wait to go back and do all over again in 2015.

The power phase consists of generating compression of water against the blade face, through tension and torque predominantly engaging the larger muscles of the torso, transferred to the board through the hip flexors down through the legs to the feet.

The arms act as levers in combination with the paddle acting

as the lever arm, engaged through rotation around the hips

ensuring the shoulders follow in alignment, with the top and

lower hands, ‘hand-over-hand’ the blade running parallel to

the board’s rail. The top arm is pressured downwards (not

forwards) with the lower arm locked.

Consider that an estimated 75% of the propulsive power

of the stroke occurs approximately within the first 7” - 12”

of pull, reinforcing the importance of the set up, entry and

catch phases of the stroke. The first part of your stroke

should initiate lift as a result of the angular entry of the

blade and downwards force applied, not forwards.

The arms must not be hyper-extended (old school).

A marginally bent lower elbow brings about greater blade

control and power delivery while permitting the muscles to

contract more efficiently and prevent ligament injury.

Avoidance of push forwards through the top arm (old school)

through the trapeziums is critical, as this negates the vertical

positioning of the blade prematurely and engagement of the

smaller, minor muscle groups.

although many of our boards have had the facility to add a windsurfing rig, it is only now that we have ventured to create a fully demountable system, which permits the traveller, to take their rig with them. developing a break apart boom and mast and designing a simple secure mast base attachment system, has been a challenge for our design team.

Paddling along the coastline of greek island of crete, waves rolling along the high, jagged cliff faces. naturally when waves appear, this can entice the opportunist to try and ride them and sometimes it requires some element of risk. We would not recommend this, but here chris Parker catches a wave and finds himself confronted by an overhanging ledge. the wave kept pushing him along until he had to bail out. no harm done, but something of a spectacle to watch.

This is a low wind, non-threatening, good-time alternative which brings the sport of windsurfing right back to where it started, accepting everything’s lighter, easier, smarter and the fun is just as big as it ever was...

mandy West a former uk Women’s national champion racer and freestyler, has found a reconnection with the sport in a way she did not think possible. this is about as basic as the windsurfing experience can get, but herein lies the fun. for those who have never windsurfed before, this is the perfect way to begin. Pulling the sail from the water with the wind on your back, the ‘up-haul’ rope is used to ‘up-haul’ (lift) the sail from the water. if the wind is in your face, just lift the sail partially out from the water and swing gently toward the nose or tail so as the board swings to bring the wind on to your back - then you can fully raise the sail.

since a young age, the wind has played a significant part in my life, forging my interests and keeping me on the water. Windsurfing is of course a natural extension of the sport and as you progress, the more the better. 25 years ago, i found myself living and travelling across the Pacific, based in australia as a result of my involvement with the sport of outrigger canoeing, indigenous to many island groups and the national team sport of hawaii and the national sport of french Polynesia.

downwind paddling, as it is termed, is an exciting discipline of this sport, whether paddling six person 45’ outrigger canoes or paddling the smaller solo 21’ craft and so it came to be, that paddling and harnessing wind and wave power in the context of high performance ocean paddling, permitted me to use some of what i had learnt from windsurfing.

With the growth of stand up paddleboarding, it became an obvious extension to combine wind, water, blade, board and body in the pursuit of paddling downwind

and indeed on the island of maui, this was the case and very much the birthplace of high performance stand up paddleboarding, long before racing on flat water was even conceived.

those who hail from an ocean paddling background, tend to bring this knowledge of paddling to the sport with them. many who are fanatical ‘downwind’ paddlers, often possess years of uniquely acquired paddling skills and a passion for chasing ‘runners’, connecting the dots, knowing the rush one gets from combining the energy of wind and water.

this particular form of stand up paddling is gathering momentum rapidly. of the three essential disciplines of the sport; surf, flat water cruising (limited breeze) and downwind paddling (strong winds) it is the latter which truly tests the rider’s combined surfing and paddling skills; dependant on endurance and an entire repertoire of ocean skills and physicality honed over many years of a devotion to an ocean sports lifestyle.

naturally, this niche area of the sport requires the correct equipment and the boards in particular must conform to certain design parameters in order to glide and surf at speed, while responding to steering through rail transitioning similar to high speed windsurfing when gybing.

overviewyou can surf, without a paddle, potter around on flat water with minimal fitness levels or ocean skills. But to take on the might of wind and water, paddling significant distances downwind between two islands separated by deep water channels or from one land point to another, travelling at high speeds, is to take the sport to a place which truly reflects its zenith in combining the melding of mind, body, board, blade and the elements. in this ocean environment, there are no road signs, no rules and no crowds.

it is in short the ultimate testing ground, where sensory perceptions are tested to the limit. here bodies can be brutalised, combining paddle skills with poise, balance, stealth, speed, endurance and tenacity. With each drop-in, the rider constantly scans the ocean for holes and powers up and down between sets, chasing ‘runners’ and looking to squeeze every drop of energy from its movement, searching for speed and a trade off between surfing (relaxing) and paddling hard.

While mastery can take years, initial practise can be on sheltered waters, but the biggest thrills are to be had in deep ocean waters. here the sport is unparalleled to which no casual participant can randomly subscribe to. this is hardcore stand up paddle boarding in the purest sense, where specificity of training and equipment, passion and drive are paramount.

Paddling techniquesWhen paddling downwind following a ‘running’ sea, knowing when to paddle hard and when to back off are key skill elements. the ability to deliver varying power, increased stroke rates and different technique to achieve effective speed gains, is a true skill.

the trigger to change any single or multiple aspect of technique or application, can either be a visual response in seeing the runner forming ahead in the form of a trough or a ‘feeling’ when the craft begins to drop at the nose and lift at the tail.

your focus needs to be on what’s ahead of you, reading and interpreting the constantly changing shape of the ocean and anticipating how your board is going to react. these skills transcend true explanation and must be learned by experience.

you must remain resolute and confident, continually biting away at the ocean, reading its nuances immediately in front and below the blade, keeping the board steady between the curvatures of the ocean, keeping a broader view and continually setting up to take advantage of the ocean’s energy, here you must avoid ‘switching off’ and simply swinging away without thought.

i have paddled many miles downwind on my m1 14’ board and mandy on the smaller 12’6 and we both agree, there are moments when they have performed beautifully.

Windsurfing

After a near five-year absence, Mistral Windsurfing returns to being under the control of

Mistral Red Dot Division Holland.

‘With mistral’s current interests in the development of suP boards and products, this has served to maintain mistral’s strong connections with that of water sport. having mistral Windsurfing coming back to us has put a smile on everybody’s faces, as the net result will serve to strengthen our brand equity by a return to its roots - and this is not to say that our interests in suP will diminish, far from it. in fact, with our interests and vision for the evolution and development of WindsuP as the bridge-sport between suP and Windsurfing, the evolutionary tree will be complete, from paddling to sailing. i could not think of a better time for this initiative and renewed amalgamation to take place, after a near five year absence from the companies control,’ commented mistral’s international vice President.

also missing from the equation has been the design, production and development of windsurfing rigs: booms, mast, sails and accessories. this will also be addressed, as mrd intends to once again enter into this arena in order to offer an entire package to the consumer. the companies vision, is to once again ‘dot’ the skies with its iconic m-dot logos, originally created by ernstfried Prade still active in the company today, be it on conventional windsurfing sails or WindsuP sails, so as the brand will come to full circle in reaffirming its position as the most iconic windsurfing, indeed watersports brand of them all.

as if to reaffirm mistral’s intent to rise like the phoenix from the ashes of Windsurfing, a sport once nothing short of a phenomenon, which at its peak, even over shadowed the popularity of today’s fastest growing water sport of stand up Paddle Boarding (suP), the iconic brand has returned home, to once again be under the control of mistral’s affiliate, mistral red dot.

the agreement sees anders Bringdal relinquishing the license and heading the newly formed mistral Windsurfing division under the control of mistral red dot (mrd). the implications are far reaching, including the centralization of mrd’s Windsurfing and suP divisions under the one roof at the companies head offices and warehousing facilities based in holland in the town of Wierden.

Bringdal under the new structure, will be responsible for liaising with distributors, attending international trade fairs, engaging in a variety of promotional activities, overseeing the management of team riders and product management and development. a once world ranked windsurfer, Bringdal turned his attention to speed sailing and is the current swedish record holder, pushing a mistral production board in excess of 50 knots, thereby setting the production board World speed record.

after a good deal of soul-searching and discussion with mistral managing director, ado huisman, Bringdal and huisman reached agreement on the 9th of sept 2014 marking a historic return of the brand to its roots. in today’s tough economic climate the absorption of mistral Windsurfing back under the control of mistral, means a centralization of marketing, customer service, administration, ware housing and day-to-day decision-making.

other initiatives within the company include the desire to create a line of technical on and off water apparel and functional footwear. ‘We already have a number of licensees manufacturing some outstanding fashion apparel and footwear, but we feel the need to develop and offer technical apparel for our suP and Windsurfing end-users. in the framework of all that mistral offers, this is one of the voids we need to fill. for our european spring of 2015, we will introduce our first short list of technical apparel, which will include technical caps, tops and footwear for suP. medium term, we aim to develop more hardcore items such as wetsuits,” said steve West.

all adjustable paddles from mistral feature a lock-down lever, which transfers the maximum clamping force directly onto the inserted part so that a very tight fit between insertion and shaft is achieved. Please ask your retailer to check and adjust tension before leaving the store. some require a hex key for adjustment, some a flat faced screw driver.

ERGONOMIC GRIPSWe tested many different shapes and have decided upon 2 basic versions. the beautifully wedge shaped round grip, which adapts to any hand size and the t-grip for smaller hands. there is also an option for an eva grip with a softer feel.

SHAFT FLEXthe combination of technologically advanced materials and enhanced user- friendly shapes. We produce the stiffest shafts for racers so as energy delivered at the shaft and grip can be fully transferred to the blade. With recreational paddling this is different. since adults, teenagers and children want to have fun during their day out on the water, they are less concerned about maximum propulsion. our fiberglass shafts are therefore better suited for adventures, providing greater flex in order to protect muscles and tendons.Whereas carbon shafts are very stiff, fiberglass shafts provide greater flex, producing a degree of ‘cushioning’ during the power phase, which leads to a ‘softer’ paddle stroke, preferred by many recreational paddlers.

BLADE FACEa blade has two important surfaces. the back of the blade is the low-pressure side facing away from the paddler. the front of the blade is the side which pressures the water and against which the paddler pulls. a dihedral, a slightly raised ridge originating at the neck of the blade, gently leveling off toward the mid-section encourages water to exit the edges evenly to eliminate oscillation (flutter) left and right.

Gold Edition Paddles

additionally, regardless of blade area, if insufficient compression (power) is given to the blade, it will slip backwards on account of uncompressed ‘soft’ water spilling from its edges. Blade area therefore, needs to be proportionate to the paddler’s strength, body mass, paddling style (fast or slow stroke rating) and of enough area to offset these loads by way of resistance.

Blade areas have greatly reduced in canoe sports from the mid 90s, moving away from the ‘bigger must be better’ theory as experienced with the evolution of outrigger canoe paddles. surface areas beyond an optimum size, simply add extra weight and ineffectual surface area which translates into unnecessary resistance and drag, particularly during the exit phase of the stroke.

Blade area measurements, only provide part of the puzzle as makers often use differing formulas and points of measurement. Blade width is often used as the predominant point of reference for blade size. outrigger canoe paddles, with shorter lever arms (shaft) fall between 10” to 8” while su-paddles now vary from around 8.5” down to 6.5”.

the longer lever arm, makes it desirable to lessen blade size and there is a clear shift now towards ever decreasing blade width and area. oversized blade areas, can lead to a variety of body stresses and injuries, ranging from haemorrhoids and tearing of minor core-muscle groups in particular.

smaller blade areas have led to more aggressive paddling techniques and styles, with higher stroke rates and greater emphasis on power at the front of the stroke. compression of the water against the blade face is critical to maximising the benefits inherent in smaller blades. some paddlers as they age, may move back to wider, larger blade areas to accommodate a slower stroke rate.

The blade must grip the water so

an effective pull can be generated,

leading to the analogy of the blade

acting as an anchor in being

stationary as the board is pulled up to

its level over the water. Importantly,

‘stationary’ is not a relative term.

Regardless of blade area, so long as

the blade is stationary during the pull

(power) phase, blade area only need

be of sufficient size to achieve this

important ‘moment’.
