But it’s a bit different:Setting up a new report in Report
Writer has different layers than setting up a new query in Query Writer.◦View / Stored Procedure / “Data
Designer”◦Data Source◦Report
Report Writer reports must be shared with users – each report has its own permissions.
Goals for today:Demonstrate how to find and run
a Report Writer report.Demonstrate how to share a
Report Writer report to other users.
Briefly touch on how reports are created.
You will see a list of reports that have been shared with you in that track. Click the report you wish to run.
Running the report can be as simple as clicking “Create Report” or “Export Report”
Clicking “Create Report” will give you a printable PDF. Clicking “Export Report” will give you an Excel file that can be used for further analysis or saved as a .CSV or .TXT for import into another software tool.
How to share a Report Writer report with other users
All of what we just saw will be useless if you can’t see the report
You won’t be able to share reports with other MISTAR users unless you have permission to
So, in order to benefit from this portion of the presentation, you need 1) Permission to see the report2) Permission to share the report
After clicking “Report Writer,” you will see the list of reports you can share or edit. Click the report you want.
After selecting whom to share a report with, be sure to click “Submit” on the report, then “Exit Report Writer”
That depends on their role permissions in MISTARIf they don’t have special Report
Writer permissions, they will only be able to run the report.
If they have all of the “Q – Report Writer …” permissions, they will be able to copy the report, create reports, and share reports they “own” with other faculty.
If user has some of the “Q – Report Writer …” permissions, see handout.
Decisions, decisions…Each district will have to think
through who should have permission to manage reports (besides the MISTAR System Administrator).
Many districts may want one or two designated “Report Managers” who can modify and share reports to other users.
Backward DesignThe problem: You need to know what
you want on the Report before you can work backwards to the View and Data Source.

Choose or Create a Data Source
Look for an existing Data Source that has what you need.
There are three types of Data Sources:◦Views - designed by WCRESA /
Oakland Schools◦Procedures - designed by WCRESA /
Oakland Schools◦Data Designers - more flexible; easily
