HISTORICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES

The Missouri Militia (State Convention) was created by an ordinance of the State Convention

passed on April 8, 1865. It was the primary peace-keeping force in post-Civil War Missouri. The

Missouri Militia (State Convention) was replaced by the Organized Missouri Militia in 1868.

Regimental returns are paperwork created by various batteries, regiments and battalions and

submitted to the Adjutant General. These records are the kind of bureaucratic paperwork on

which the Army marched. Due to the chaotic nature of the Civil War and post war period in

Missouri, the lack of reliable postal service, and poor record keeping in the field, these records

are very incomplete.

The majority of regimental returns for the Missouri Militia (State Convention) are loyalty oaths

of officers.
