They send right-hander Andrew Thurman to the hill against his fellow former-Astros farmhand Adrian Houser. LAST TIME OUT: John Gant fired seven one-run innings and the Mississippi Braves’ bats came alive for the second straight night, downing the Biloxi Shuckers 8-2 on Saturday night at Trustmark Park. With the Pensacola 4-0 loss to Jackson, the M- Braves pulled to a half-game behind Pensacola with eight remaining in 2015. Sean Godfrey and Emerson Landoni drove in a run apiece in the second inning to give the M-Braves the lead for good, while Rio Ruiz extended his hit streak and the lead with a bases-clearing double in the sixth. Ruiz is riding a Southern League-high 14-game streak. SPRINT TO THE FINISH: The Jackson Generals’ Misael Siverio allowed just one hit over six shutout frames to Pensacola and the Generals beat the Blue Wahoos 4-0, pulling the M-Braves to a half-game back with 8 to play. Mobile’s third straight loss set them to three games back, while Biloxi stayed 3.5 back. RACING FOR THE WHIFFS RECORD: The M-Braves pitching staff has 240 strikeouts in August, just 14 shy of the team record for K’s in a month. The record was set in May 2014 at 254. The Braves have posted 12 double-digit strikeout games as a staff in August. THE LONE RUN-GER: The M-Braves have played 8 contests to a 1-0 final score this season--5 against Pensacola, including Tuesday night--and are tied with the Blue Wahoos for the league lead. No other Southern League team has played more than four. Eight 1-0 finals (2012, 4-4) and five wins (2008, 5-1) are tied for the M-Braves team record in a season. EFFECTIVELY WILD: In August, the M-Braves’ pitching staff has averaged 4.72 walks per 9 innings (126 in 240.1 IP), the second highest rate in a month in team history behind April 2009 (5.41). Despite the free passes, the M-Braves are 15-12 in the month, as opposed to 9-11 in April ‘09. ROLLING DOWN THE RIO: In his last 24 games, Rio Ruiz is hitting .333 (30-90) with 8 doubles, a triple, 3 home runs. The 21-year-old is riding a season-high 14-game hit streak--the league’s longest active streak--over which he’s batting .370 (20-54). He has back-to-back 3-RBI games after driving in no more than two in first 128 games. KING KANG AWAY FROM HOME: KD Kang is currently on a 29-game road on-base streak that started 6/21 at Tennessee, the final game of the first half. He’s reached safely in every road game played in the second half, the longest streak this season in the Southern League. LANDONI LEADING THE LINEUP: Emerson Landoni has been a Mississippi Brave since 2012, but he had never hit leadoff in his double-A career until Tuesday 8/4. The M-Braves are 14-8 in games where Landoni leads off. SECOND HALF TEAM: The M-Braves have consistently been a second-half team through their 11-year history, posting a 365-399 (.478 win percentage) mark in the first half, compared to a 373-370 (.502 win percentage) in the second half. With their 34th win on 8/29, the M-Braves have finished with a better second-half record than first-half record for eight consecutive seasons, dating back to 2008.
