THE IDEA:

fmRIESE ON YOUR MIND

FINDING NEW PATHSfmRiese – Forward Music Festival is intuitive and curious, simultaneously com-plex and stripped down to the basics. It is music experienced on an emotional le-vel. And since musical experience cannot be classified in just one single category, fmRiese is not restricted to any particular musical genre. Instead, the festival dissol-ves boundaries between sounds, recombining apparent opposites into something new. fmRiese is a platform that puts music in new contexts never before imagined, while keeping its gaze steadily focused on the present, with its many modes of auditory expression.

fmRiese is different – not because it invents something new, but because it interprets what already exists in a completely new way.

MUSICIANS AND AUDIENCE – A MUTUALLY ENRICHING EXPERIENCEThe relationship between performers and audience is defined by the same basic principle that guides fmRiese as a whole: Experience the familiar, discover the unfamiliar.

The musicians are established ensembles, exciting artists, or talented newcomers who offer premier performances and new interpretations at the interface between pop, electronics, and new music – in other words, between the lightness, energy, and emotion of pop music and the gravity, formality, and highly structured nature of intellectual music. Traditional formats such as string quartets and classical Lieder are mixed in with dance floor music and pop songs – with sound and groove. All performers are looking for pathways that never existed before. fmRiese is a place where thoughts and ideas are freely exchanged among young and young-at-heart musicians who have moved beyond the long-outdated models of intellec-tual music and popular music. They come from a wide range of genres and bring their different approaches and attitudes with them.

fmRiese follows the general principle that music has to be more than just innovative and original – it has to be emotionally moving.

That is why fmRiese appeals, first and foremost, to people who are curious about music – people who view listening to music as an adventure and are ready and willing to leave familiar pathways, in order to enter into uncharted territory.

Those who open up their minds will experience new worlds of sound.

THE FEELING:

fmRIESE IN YOUR HEART

INTENSITY AND EXPRESSIONIn addition, the atmosphere in Swarovski Kristallwelten (Swarovski Crystal Worlds) ensures that the world of sound is experienced in an intimate setting, close to world stars and artists. The interplay between the ambitious program and the small audience of no more than 400 visitors creates an atmosphere of cooperation and mutual support – completely different than commercial mass audience events.

INTELLECTUAL FRAMEWORK, ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITYfmRiese is an event that goes far beyond the “festival” label. In regard to music, it is an event that crosses borders; from the perspective of art and sustainability, it is a clever idea.

Christof Dienz has served as the curator of fmRiese since the very beginning. Dienz is a composer, bassoonist, zither player, and expert in the area of New Music, with a far-reaching network of contacts and partners in the young music scene. He is the artistic director, responsible for creating the program and selecting the performers.

fmRiese is melodic food for thought – unconventional, intimate, and intelligent.
