2016 was a year to celebrate! The Foundation awarded16 grants to projects and programs throughout theMuskingum Watershed – the greatest number of grantsever! 2016 was also a record-breaking fundraising year,as revenues topped $67,000! We also added two newfunds: the Pleasant Hill Lake Park Fund and the Bike andHike Fund. 2016 also marked the 15th Anniversary ofthe Foundation as a charitable nonprofit organization! We have accomplished so much in these 15 years, including growth in our fundraising, growth in thenumber of our charitable funds, and growth in ourgrantmaking.
The 18th Annual Golf Outing, held on August 11, 2016at Oak Shadows Golf Club in New Philadelphia, wasanother record-breaking fundraiser! The event was soldout with 36 teams participating and included threeplatinum sponsors, four gold sponsors, 12 silversponsors, and 39 hole sponsors. The Foundation raisedover $29,000 from this event, surpassing last year’srecord-breaking fundraising event! We cannot thankour sponsors enough for making the 2016 outing sosuccessful!
The Foundation also held its second Annual Meeting onNovember 4, 2016. Proceeds from the Annual Meetingsupport our Mini Grant Program. We highlighted the2016 Mini Grant program at our Annual Meeting, andhad our youth camp grant recipients explain theirprojects. The Foundation funded Mini Grants to fivecamps in 2016, making a big impact on outdoorrecreation and environmental education for hundredsof youth campers. We look forward to supporting moreof the great work of our youth camps in 2017.
Our assets also continue to grow. Our total assets arenow nearly $750,000. By charitable foundationstandards, we are not a large foundation, but we havemade a large impact. Your gifts, your sponsorships, andyour charitable donations go toward the betterment of

MINI GRANT PROGRAM
The Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District hasalways had a strong partnership with the thirteen youthcamps that are located along its lakes. The campsprovide children with great opportunities for summerrecreation and personal development. Each yearthousands of youth attend these camps and get toexperience the great forests and lakes that MWCDmanages.
In addition to the MWCD’s strong partnerships withthese youth camps, the Foundation also has unique ties.Three of the eleven Foundation Board of Trustees haveworked at these youth camps, and two Trustees werecamp directors for over 30 years, respectively.
The Foundation conceived the idea of a Mini GrantProgram in 2015 as a way to further support theprograms and projects of the thirteen youth camps. Thisgrant program also coincided with the planning of theFoundation’s inaugural Annual Meeting. The Board ofTrustees decided to utilize this new event, the AnnualMeeting, as a fundraiser to support the Mini GrantProgram.
The Mini Grant Program is open to the thirteen youthcamps along MWCD lakes and funds programs andprojects supporting recreation, natural resourceconservation, and outdoor and environmentaleducation.
“The Mini Grant Program was established to help thecamps enhance the educational experience and increaserecreational opportunities for these youth,” saidDevelopment Coordinator Nick Lautzenheiser. “It wouldnot be possible to have this grant program and supportthe great work of these youth camps without thegenerous support from our Annual Meeting sponsorsand attendees,” said Board of Trustees Chairman JimSchoch.

TOUR DE MWCD
Muskingum Watershed Conservancy FoundationAnnual Report 2016
Cycling has always been a passion for FoundationDevelopment Coordinator Nick Lautzenheiser, and heloves riding throughout the Muskingum Watershed, exploring the roads around the Conservancy District’slakes and parks. In fact, most of his regular bike ridesvisit at least one of MWCD’s facilities. That passion ledto the creation of a new charitable fund for theFoundation.
In May 2016 Nick and his wife, Marissa, established anew fund in the Foundation – the Bike and Hike Fund –which would support future bicycle and trailinfrastructure projects throughout the MuskingumWatershed. “Our intent was to create a fund that couldhelp support trails in parks and communities, bike lanesand signage on roads, and trailheads and trailamenities,” said Lautzenheiser. “Also, I wanted tocreate a fundraiser to match our initial donation, bolster the fund, and promote awareness for both theFoundation and the Bike and Hike fund. The idea forcompleting a long bike ride seemed like the perfectfundraiser, and 200 miles seemed like the perfectdistance.”
Lautzenheiser completed the “Tour de MWCD” on July31, 2017. The Tour was a one-day, 201-mile bicycleride, which included stops at all of the ConservancyDistrict parks and marinas. The MWCD has long had avision of linking its facilities with a vast network oftrails; the Tour de MWCD route symbolically matchedthis vision.
Lautzenheiser started the journey from the AtwoodLake Park Welcome Center at 7:00 AM. He thentraveled south, visiting the Leesville Lake Dam andSouth Fork Marina, Tappan Lake Park, Clendening LakeMarina, Piedmont Lake Marina, Seneca Lake Marina, and then Seneca Lake Park. Then he headed westwardand northward, traveling through New Concord, andstopping at Wills Creek Lake, Coshocton (where theWalhonding River and Tuscarawas River meet to formthe Muskingum River), the Mohawk Dam, Pleasant HillLake Park, and finishing at the Messerly RecreationCenter in Charles Mill Lake Park at 7:30 PM. The ride
took 11 hours and 50 minutes. Marissa drove thesupport vehicle, which was stocked with water, food, tools, spare tubes, and even a spare bike.
“You really get an appreciation for how vast theMuskingum Watershed is when you ride 200 miles andonly ride in 11 of the 27 counties it encompasses. Mostof my ride was in the Middle and Lower TuscarawasRiver, Wills Creek, and Walhonding River basins. I didnot see any of the Upper Tuscarawas River or LowerMuskingum River watersheds. You also get anappreciation for how scenic the watershed is. This isreally a great part of the state, and it’s ideal for cyclingand hiking. The MWCD has so many beautiful lakes andparks, and it was so great to be able to see all of themin one day. And, there’s no better way to explore thewatershed than by bicycle.”
The bike ride raised over $2,200 and greatly boostedthe Bike and Hike Fund. “I was extremely overwhelmedwith all of the generosity and support! Those donationswill help support future bicycle and hiking trail projectsthroughout the Muskingum Watershed,” saidLautzenheiser.
Lautzenheiser aims to continue this fundraiser annually, with different routes each year exploring new areas ofthe vast Muskingum Basin. “I’m already planning the2017 Tour de MWCD route. My goal is to see new areasof the watershed each year.”
Lautzenheiser hopes the Tour de MWCD will eventuallyblossom into a multi-day bicycle tour attractinghundreds of cyclists. “I think there’s real potential tomake this an amazing event.”
“Marissa and I hope the Bike and Hike Fund continuesto grow, so that it can help support a number of greatprojects for bicycle and trail improvements in thecommunities and parks throughout our watershed.More trails will ultimately encourage more people toget out and enjoy our beautiful watershed!”
