from our youngest youth to our oldest adult – to read Father Gregory Boyle’s book Tattoos on the Heart. It is an incredible reflection on Father Boyle’s work among the most gang-dominated streets of East Los Angeles, California. Nothing in the book seems relevant to First Baptist Church Greenville...and everything in this book is relevant to First Baptist Church Greenville. I promise you will laugh, cry, think and be inspired. In October, I will be leading a four week discussion of the book. Three different times will be offered each week for you to attend a discussion session: Sunday morning, a weekday lunch and a weekday evening. Hopefully everyone will be able to fit one of these into their schedule. But even if you cannot attend a discussion session, please read the book. Now, it’s back to school. Go to the bookstore, buy your book and do your homework. I’ll see you in class in October...

First Baptist is partnering with Nicholtown Baptist Church to collect shoes for Haiti, Uganda and India. Children’s shoes are also collected year-round for Just Clothes and Love at First Baptist. This is a wonderful opportunity to give the shoes you no longer need to those who have none. The shoe drive starts Wednesday, August 27, and ends September 15. Containers marked for donations are located in the Rotunda, outside the Fellowship Hall, outside the Sanctuary and in the AYMC. For more information, call Frank Smith, 616-5444, or Delores Durham, 325-3195, at Nicholtown Missionary Baptist Church. All donated children’s shoes will be given to Just Clothes and Love.

For Lack of a Shoe...

On August 26, the staff of First Baptist Greenville took the Ice Bucket Challenge in honor of church member Teresa Gray. Teresa, wearing a shirt that reads “ALS messed with the WRONG CHICK,” also took part in the soaking (pictured above).
