Today’s readings focus on the necessity of humility
The theme of humility is central to our readings today. God Himself is a humble God, so if we wish to follow Him as Christian disciples, we too, must exercise humility. In fact, humility is key to becoming intentional disciples, and to a peaceful and fulfilling life.
Our first reading from Zechariah foretells the unexpected way in which the Lord, the Savior of the world, will arrive. “See, your king shall come to you; a just savior is he, meek and riding on an ass…and he shall proclaim peace to the nations.” It is almost unfathomable that our almighty all-powerful God would humble Himself to live among us as one of us, let alone to contemplate the unassuming way in which He arrived. Christ has given us a clear and compelling model of humility.
But this kind of humility goes against our natural, worldly bent which says we must insist on having our own way, assert our rights at all costs, and put ourselves first so as to get ahead. How can we possibly live the radical and selfless way Christ is calling us to live when the secular life is calling us to do just the opposite?
As St. Paul tells us in the letter to the Romans, our second reading today, “Brothers and sisters: you are not in the flesh; on the contrary, you are in the spirit.” The gifts of our Baptism and Confirmation grants us a “super power” right within us – the Holy Spirit – Who gives us every spiritual gift and the strength needed to follow Christ. We must awaken to the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives…especially the key virtue of humility. Paul reminds us: “For if you live according to the flesh, you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.”
In our Gospel passage from Matthew, Jesus Himself speaks to the Father of the privileged role that humble souls play in God’s plan of salvation: “I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to little ones.”
What does it mean to be a “little one”? It means that we acknowledge we don’t have it all figured out, but are very much in need of a savior. It means we recognize that all we are and all we have been given are gifts from God.
It isn’t easy, but deep peace and consolation come from this intentional way of life. Jesus offers warm and encouraging words to us: “Come to me all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.”

Las lecturas de hoy se concentran en la necesidad
de la humildad.
El tema de la humildad es central en nuestras lecturas de hoy. Dios mismo es un Dios humilde, así que si deseamos seguirlo como discípulos cristianos, nosotros también debemos ejercer la humildad. De hecho, la humildad es clave para convertirse en discípulos intencionales y para una vida pacífica y plena.
Nuestra primera lectura de Zacarías predice la forma inesperada en que llegará el Señor, el Salvador del mundo. “Mira, tu rey vendrá a ti; él es un salvador justo, y humilde que montado en un asno... el proclamo la paz a las naciones ". Es casi inimaginable que nuestro Dios todo poderoso se humille a sí mismo para vivir entre nosotros como uno de nosotros, y mucho menos para contemplar la manera sin pretensiones en que llegó. Cristo nos ha dado un modelo claro y convincente de humildad.
Pero este tipo de humildad va en contra de nuestras inclinaciones natural y mundana que dice que debemos insistir en crear nuestro propio camino, en hacer valer nuestros derechos a toda costa y ponernos en primer lugar para salir adelante. ¿Cómo podemos vivir de la manera radical y desinteresada que Cristo nos llama a vivir cuando la vida secular nos llama a hacer todo lo contrario?
Como San Pablo nos dice en la carta a los romanos, en nuestra segunda lectura de hoy, “Hermanos y hermanas: ustedes no están en la carne; por el contrario, estás en el espíritu ". Los dones de nuestro Bautismo y Confirmación nos otorgan un "súper poder" dentro de nosotros, el Espíritu Santo, que nos da todos los dones espirituales y la fuerza necesaria para seguir a Cristo. Debemos despertar al poder del Espíritu Santo en nuestras vidas... especialmente la virtud clave de la humildad. Pablo nos recuerda: "Porque si vives según la carne, morirás, pero si por el Espíritu matas las obras del cuerpo, vivirás".
En nuestro pasaje evangélico de Mateo, Jesús mismo le habla al Padre del papel privilegiado que desempeñan las almas humildes en el plan de salvación de Dios: “Te alabo, Padre, Señor del cielo y de la tierra, porque aunque les has ocultado estas cosas a los sabios y entendidos, y les has revelado a la gente humilde ".
¿Qué significa ser un "humilde"? Significa que reconocemos que no lo tenemos todo resuelto, pero que necesitamos un salvador. Significa que reconocemos que todo lo que somos y todo lo que se nos ha dado son regalos de Dios.
No es fácil, pero la paz y el consuelo profundos provienen de esta forma de vida intencional. Jesús nos ofrece palabras cálidas y alentadoras: “Vengan a mí todos los que trabajan y están agobiados, y yo les daré descanso. Tomen mi yugo sobre ustedes y aprendan de mí, porque soy manso y humilde de corazón; y ustedes encontrarán descanso. Porque mi yugo es suave, y mi carga es ligera”.
