FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Dear Parish Family,

Peace and all good! This weekend we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany, the revelation of Jesus our Sav-ior to the Gentile (non-Jewish) peoples of the world. This important day —celebrated in the Eastern churches even before the Nativity of Christ itself was declared a feast— reminds us that we are still in the Christmas season. The unfolding of the mystery of the Incarnation of Jesus is a mystery to be saved and sa-vored over time.

By now, most of us have taken down our Christmas trees and put away the decorations for another eleven months. The gifts we have given and received—opened long ago—are now being integrated into our everyday lives. They may always be special, but they will never be completely new again.

In the middle of our return to routines and the Janu-ary blahs (Did I really put that much on my credit card? Do I have to start on my income taxes already?), we receive an extra gift, an extraordinary surprise from the Lord. The Epiphany is a kind of Emancipation Proclama-tion for all of the people in the world. As the Magi (Gentiles, all of them) were received by Christ, they in turn received the Lord in a marvelous exchange of gifts. Needless to say, they got a lot more than they gave in the form of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

What they and we receive, Paul tells us in his letter to the Ephesians, is the gift and revelation that all peo-ple are God’s chosen people—that Gentiles as well as Jews are called to be members of the Body of Christ, coheirs of His promise of salvation. That means that no one—absolutely no one—is beyond the reach of God’s all-embracing Love made manifest in Jesus Christ. There are no spiritual “haves” and “have-nots”—everyone has equal access to God and to the promise of salvation.

This recognition that we are—each and all of us— loved by God is our true, personal epiphany. The Magi, themselves transformed by this insight and grace, were forced to return to their country “by another way.” They just couldn’t go back home by the route by which they arrived in Bethlehem—no matter if Herod were waiting in ambush for them or not. Their lives had been dramatically and permanently changed by their encounter with Jesus. They had to find a new way of leading their lives in the light of this deep spiritual in-sight and gift.

If we, in the 21st century, can accept and even take for granted that we are within the circle of God’s Love, then we are obliged to make certain that no one else is either. We need to ask ourselves some serious ques-tions: Have I myself completely accepted God’s gift of friendship and love? What do I have to change in my life/ lifestyle in light of this new understanding of God’s love?

Is there anyone I/we have cut off and excluded from my/ our life and friendship for no good reason? Who still needs our welcome, acceptance, and attention right now? How can we as a community extend Christ’s all-embracing and inclusive love? Plenty to chew on for now and for a long time to come. But don’t worry—Lent’s on its way sooner than we think! More than 150 friars will be descending upon the Mission and Parish for this week of discernment and decision-making. CATECHETICAL MINUTE RM3 ROMAN MISSAL

QUESTION:

In the previous translation, at the end of the Conse-cration of the cup, (now Chalice) the missal’s text reads: “shed for you and for all”, now it reads “poured out for you and for many.” Why the change in lan-guage from “all” to “many”? Are we denying some peo-ple the opportunity for salvation? RESPONSE: This new and literal translation causes us to pause and question what we hear prayed and proclaimed at Mass. This is not necessarily a bad thing. We are confronted

with the question: “What did the Lord mean when say-ing he shed his Blood “for many?” The accuracy of the new language is evident in both the Greek and Latin translations. In the Greek, the word is pollon which translates “many”. In Latin, Pro multis which also trans-lates “for many”. The line is a quotation from the words of the Lord at the Last Supper from Mark 14:24 and Matthew 26:28. The former translation was written under the policy of dynamic equivalence not as the use of a literal transla-tion we are now using. From the New Jerome Biblical Commentary: “The phrase hyper pollon “for many” is based on the He-brew of Isaiah 53:12 it means for all not just for one or a few (pg 626 ). The Hebrew text uses the plural form “many” in order to teach that the OT sacrifice is not just for any one person or group, (Kings or Temple Priests) but for all who avail themselves of the sacri-fice. In this understanding the word “many” in its proper scriptural meaning is not the same as our cur-rent common understanding of the word, as meaning a “limited” number. Pope Benedict made the change in the final line of the words of consecration to be trans-lated pro multis as “for many” after consultation with the Bishops of the English-speaking communities of the Catholic Church. Elements of the New Translation, such as this, lead us to pause and to question, and this is our challenge as Catholics. We as Catholics do not have a biblical tradition of fundamentalism or literary interpretation. When a phrase or word in the New Translation causes us to pause and question we (that means all of us) must do more than just that. We need to ask ques-tions, we need to study the “whys” and to use the an-swers we find to enter more fully into the Liturgy. The role of the liturgy is to shake us awake to our faith es-pecially in times such as now, when the witness of faith is so badly needed. So to answer the question “are we denying all peo-ple salvation?” The answer is a definite, No! The un-conditional gift of grace that can lead a person to faith is always present in our world. The Vatican Council re-peats this statement over and over again in its many documents. The bottom line is this, no translation can ever fully describe God’s love for us and others. It is up to each of us to be examples of that love which we experience each time we go to Mass and take it into our world as we leave.

Serenity Retreat—January 20-22, 2012 By Fr. Tom Weston SJ

Here is an opportunity to spend a weekend with women and men in recovery from alcoholism and addiction. Our retreat is open to folks in AA, NA and Al-Anon. The retreat will focus on the 12 steps of Alco-holics Anonymous with prayer and media-tion. The retreat begins with dinner at 6:00 p.m. and ends with lunch on Sunday. Private single room is $240, shared room is $190, commuter $130.

Querida Familia Parroquial,

¡Paz y todo bien! Este fin de semana nosotros celebramos la Fiesta de la Epifanía, la revelación de Jesús nuestro Salva-dor a los gentiles (no judíos) la gente del mundo. Este día tan importante—celebrado en las iglesias del este, aún antes de la Natividad de Cristo y declarada una fiesta, nos recuerda que estamos aún en la estación de Navidad. El desarrollo del Misterio de la Encarnación de Jesús en un misterio para ser conservado y saboreado todo el tiempo. Hoy en día, la mayoría de nosotros han bajado los árboles y guardado las decoraciones para usarlas de nuevo dentro de once meses. Los regalos que hemos dado y que hemos recibi-do, abiertos hace mucho tiempo, ya están siendo integrados en nuestras vidas diarias. Ellos pueden ser especiales siempre pero ellos no serán nuevos completamente de nuevo. En medio de nuestro regreso a las rutinas y lo absurdo de enero (¿Le añadí tanto a mi tarjeta de crédito? ¿Tengo que empezar a trabajar ya en mi planilla de contribuciones?), no-sotros recibimos un regalo extra, una sorpresa extraordinaria del Señor. La Epifanía es una clase de Proclamación de Eman-cipación para toda la gente del mundo. Como los Magos (Gentiles, todos ellos) fueron recibidos por Cristo y ellos a su vez recibieron al Señor in un intercambio maravilloso de rega-los. Increíblemente, ellos recibieron mucho más de lo que regalaron en forma de oro, de incienso y de mirra. Lo que ellos regalaron y que nosotros recibimos, nos dice Pablo en su carta a los Efesios, es el regalo y la revelación de que toda la gente es el pueblo escogido de Dios—los gentiles así como los judíos están llamados a ser miembros del Cuerpo de Cristo, co-herederos de Su promesa de salvación. Esto quiere decir que nadie—absolutamente nadie está fuera del alcance del amor abrazador totalmente de Dios, hecho y ma-nifestado en Cristo Jesús. Allí no hay “invitados” espirituales o excluídos—todo el mundo tiene acceso igual a Dios y a la pro-mesa de salvación. Este reconocimiento, todos y cada uno de nosotros, de que todos somos amados por Dios es nuestra epifanía verdadera y personal. Los Magos, transformados ellos mismos por esta gracia y este reconocimiento propio, fueron obligados a re-gresar a sus países “por otra ruta.” Ellos ya no podían regresar a sus hogares por la ruta que ellos llegaron a sus hogares por la ruta que ellos llegaron a Belén, aún cuando Herodes les estaba esperando o no en una emboscada. Sus vidas les fue-ron cambiadas, dramáticamente y permanentemente por su encuentro con Jesús. Ellos tuvieron que encontrar una forma nueva de dirigir sus vidas a la luz de este regalo y de esta perspicacia espiritual. Si nosotros, en el siglo 21, podemos aceptar y reconocer que nosotros estamos dentro del círculo del amor de Dios,…

Del Escritorio del Párroco entonces nosotros estamos obligados a llevar a cabo ciertos cambios, entonces nosotros estamos obligados a asegurarnos que nadie está fuera. Nosotros debemos hacernos algunas preguntas serias: ¿He aceptado yo completamente el regalo de la amistad y el amor de Dios? ¿Qué debo yo cambiar en mi vida, o en mi estilo de vida a la luz del entendimiento nuevo del amor de Dios? ¿Existe alguna persona que yo/nosotros podemos excluir de mi/nuestra vida y amistad por ninguna razón buena? ¿Quizá necesita nuestra bienvenida, nuestra aceptación y atención ahora mismo? ¿Cómo podemos noso-tros, como comunidad, extender el amor inclusivo y abraza-dor de Cristo? Tenemos mucho que considerar por ahora y por mucho tiempo. Pero no se preocupen. La Cuaresma está en camino antes de lo que pensamos. Dios los bendiga,

PREGUNTA:

En la traducción anterior, al final de la Consagración de la copa, (ahora el Cáliz) el texto del misal lee “derramado por ti y por todos”, ahora el misal lee “derramado para ti y para muchos.” ¿Por qué el cambio en lenguaje de “todos” a “muchos”? ¿Le estamos negando a algunas personas la opor-tunidad de salvación? RESPUESTA:

Esta traducción nueva y literal nos hace detener y pregun-tarnos sobre lo que escuchamos rezando y proclamando en la Misa. “Qué quiere decir el Señor cuando dice que El derramó Su Sangre para “muchos”? La exactitud del lenguaje nuevo es evidente en ambas traducciones, en la griega y en latín. En la griega la palabra es pOllon que significa “muchos.” En latín Pro multis que también se traduce “por muchos.”

La línea es una cita de las palabras del Señor en la Ultima Ce-na, Marcos 14:24 y de Mateo 26:28. La traducción anterior fue escrita bajo la política de equivalencia dinámica a no ser usada con una traducción literal que nosotros estamos utili-zando ahora.

De acuerdo al Comentario Bíblico Nuevo de Jerome: “La Frase hyper pollon “para muchos” está basada en Hebreo de Isaías 53:12 esto significa para todos no para uno o unos pocos (página 626.) El texto hebreo usa la forma de plural “muchos”, en orden de enseñar que el sacrificio OT no es so-lamente para una persona o grupo, (Reyes o Sacerdotes del Templo) sino más bien para todos los que aprovechan el sa-crificio. En este entendimiento la palabra “muchos” en su significado propio de las escrituras no es el mismo como nuestro entendimiento corriente común de la palabra, signifi-cando un número “limitado.” El Santo Padre Benedicto hizo el cambio en la línea final de las palabras de consagración pro multis, a ser traducido a “para muchos” después de consultar con los Obispos de comunidades de habla inglesa de la Iglesia Católica.

Elementos de la Nueva Traducción, tales como este, nos lle-van a detenernos y a preguntar y ese es nuestro reto como católicos. Nosotros como católicos no tenemos tradición bíbli-ca de fundamentalismo o de interpretación literaria. Cuando una frase o una palabra en el Nuevo Testamento, nos detiene y cuestionamos nosotros (que significa todos nosotros), debe-mos hacer mucho más que eso. Nosotros debemos hacer pre-guntas, nosotros debemos estudiar los “porqués” y utilizar las respuestas que nosotros encontremos para entrar plenamen-te en la Liturgia. El propósito de la liturgia es movernos para que despertemos a nuestra fe, especialmente en tiempos como los de hoy en día, cuando el testimonio de Fe está tan necesitado.

Así pues, para contestar esta pregunta, “¿Estamos negándole la salvación a todo el mundo? ¡La respuesta es No! Definitiva-mente! El regalo incondicional de la gracia que puede guiar a una persona a la gracia está siempre presente en nuestro mundo. El Concilio Vaticano repite este dato de nuevo y de nuevo en sus muchos documentos.

En síntesis esto es: ninguna traducción puede describir plena-mente el amor de Dios para nosotros y para los demás. Nos toca a cada uno de nosotros ser ejemplos de ese amor que nosotros experimentamos cada vez que nosotros asistimos a Misa y que traemos a nuestro mundo al salir.
