OFMMeet the Artist

In the beginning, Friar Vincent beganwith a slab of pinewood and a pencil.

Creating our cross is called “writing an icon.” The process began

with pencil sketches.

Our icon was written from the outside in, beginning with the border.

Jesus summoned the Twelve and began to

send them out two by two.

Friar Vincent said that writing an icon is considered

as much a form of prayer as an art.

Prayer and contemplation started and ended each step of the

icon writing process..

Each brush stroke represented a peaceful form of meditation.

Friar Vincent explained that writing an icon is about speaking

a language of colors and symbols.

The sparrow finds a home, and the swallow

a nest for her young:by your altars,

O Lord of hosts, my King and my God.(Cf. Psalm 84 (83):4-5)

Friar Vincent worked in layers. From drawing to outline, dark colors

to light shading.

Every symbol and element of the painting fits together precisely to

create a whole story.

Can you spot the rooster? This bird is symbolic of the one that crowed three times during Jesus’ passion.

Our Icon that hangs here in Serra Center took hundreds of hours to complete.

Our San Damiano cross in Serra Center will continue to tell the story of 217 years of our

history for many years to come.
