    FROM THE PASTORS DESK

    Dear Parish Family,

Peace and all good! This weekend we celebrate themiddle or fourth Sunday of Lent, traditionally known asLaetare Sunday. Here, we are given a rest from our Lentenstruggles. Time out to consider the distance already

travelled as well as the climb ahead. Onward towardChrists Calvary and our own. And beyond that, to thefulfilled hope that is Easter joy. In fact, the very wordlaetare in Latin, literally means Let us rejoice!

Laetare! Let us rejoice! It is no accident, then, that todaywe hear the remarkable words of Jesusprobably the mostfamous, most frequently quoted sentences from the NewTestament: For God so loved the world that He gave Hisonly Son, so that everyone who believes in Him might notperish but might have eternal life. (John 3:14).

Jesus first speaks these words of words of hope anden-courage-mentto Nicodemus. Nicodemus: a Pharisee,

member of the Sanhedrina man firmly entrenched in theJewish elite, the very ruling class so often criticized by Jesusfor its callous indifference to the poor.

Yet, Nicodemus is an exception to notions of pharisaicalhypocrisy. He is an intelligent, serious, and sincere man, living in the tension between material privilege andauthentic spiritual longing. Jesus accepts Nicodemus on hisown terms as a spiritual seeker and man of faith, nomatter how incomplete and immature that faith might be.He permits Nicodemus to visit him at nightaway from thecrowds and the harsh glare of public challenge andconfrontation. Patiently, firmly, Jesus guides Nicodemusfrom darkness toward the Lightthe True Light of HisPresence and His Love. Precisely because Jesus haswelcomed, accepted, nurtured, and challenged him, Nicode-mus grows in faith over time. Astonishingly, it is this closetcatechumen who later rises up to defend Jesus right to afair trial before His conniving colleagues in the Sanhedrin(John 7:50-52). Finally, along with Joseph of Arimathea,Nicodemus lovingly prepares the body of Jesus for burialwhen it is removed from the cross (John 19:39-41). Oncethe timid waverer, Nicodemus ultimately emerges in broaddaylight as a man of solid conviction and deep faith, willingto accept the risk of believing the risk to be-living hisfaith in Jesus.

I know a priest who lives in a small village in northernIrelanda place where the fault line of mutual fear andsuspicion cuts deeply, separating and segregating Catholicand Protestant Christians from each other. Still, my priestacquaintance is on very good terms with his Protestantcolleaguesthe local Presbyterian pastor and his wife. Butthese good people dare not meet openly as friends in thelight of day; each would face ostracism by their own people.Instead, they exchange visits quietly, after darka discrete

rap on the door, dinner or a cup of tea behind drawncurtains. Real, but incomplete friendship in the midst of abroken and struggling community.

We all struggle with our own real but incomplete rela-tionshipswith ourselves, with othersand with God. Indarkness, we, too, knock softly, tentatively at the door.Bidden silently, we step inside. Behind drawn curtains, wequestion and struggle with our patient, listening Lord. The

same Lord who reassures our own nicodemus that, indeed,God so loved the world that He gave his only Son to us.

As Catholic Christians we believe that our promisedEaster joy is already present and poignant in the Eucharistwe share. Let us pray for ourselves and each other, then, that nurtured and strengthened by the Lord himself, we,like Nicodemus, may come to believe-- to be living ourfaith more deeplyas we wait in joyful hope for the com-ing of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

    God bless,

    Fr. Chuck

PS: This weekend, we celebrate and bid farewell to ourBusiness Manager, Allen Hartman, upon his retirement. We have been so blessed by the presence and leadership ofthis remarkable gentleman who has given so generously ofhimselfhis time, talent and treasureto the parish familyhe so clearly loves. Thank you, Allen, and may God blessyou! Vaya con Dios!//

What Catholics Believe is a process of introduction andreview of the basic beliefs of the Catholic Faith. At our parishthis program is our Adult Confirmation Process. The twelvesessions of the program are media based and are interactivequizzes on the Catholic Faith.

Confirmation is the sacrament required to be a Godparentand to celebrate the Sacrament of Matrimony.

THE CATECHETICAL MINUTEROMAN MISSAL: THE NICENE CREED COMPLETED

As we come to the ending of the creed there are stillnew translations of key words to reflect upon.

adoredreplaces the word worshipped. It is a directtranslation that more closely brings the intent of thecreeds language into aclear focus.

The phrase I confess one baptism (with the empha-sis on the word confess), replacing we acknowledgeisa more forceful expression. In this context confessmeans professes belief in not express sorrow forsins. It is a stronger word than acknowledge because itinvolves the heart not just the head.

At the end of the creed we now say I look forward tothe resurrection insteadthat merely we look to the res-urrection. This is a clearer translation of the Latin, re-flecting a sincere desire and a confidence. The originalLatin exspecto conveys a sense of anxious waiting and

expectation. With confidence we state belief in godwho gives us faith. The creed is a liturgical prayer, in a sense, you can

say, it is one of the earliest examples of liturgical cate-chesis. It is recited after the liturgy of the word as a re-sponse to what preceded it. With this in mind the recit-ing of this prayer should not be rushed, nor is it a prayerthat is proclaimed only by the celebrant. This prayer isthe creed of all the baptized.

    STEP BACK This Lenten

    SeasonWe live such hectic, busy lives;

there is often so little time to no-tice what is happening to us. Gathering together regu-larly with a few fellow parishioners in a Small ChristianCommunity offers people a chance to slow down, to bea bit more reflective about life, to sift and sort thethings that count. Over time the Small Christian Com-munity becomes a place where members ask: Howmight God be acting in this crazy mixed-up life Im living, even if I dont pay much attention to Gods presence on

a day to day basis? The Mission San Luis Rey Core Team invites you to

consider joining an SCC. All cultures are welcomed to join or start a group (8 to 12 people). Find out morefrom Eileen Costa (SCC Coordinator), at (760) 231-9930;or Bartolo Mendez at (760) 945-3701; or Tavale Tavaleat (760) 295-4088.

Be a part of bringing the presence of Christs love toyour Family and Mission San Luis Reys Parish Family.

There will be NO Faith Formation classes on March 25.Catechists will be attending the Religious Education Congress.

8 |PARROQUIAMISION SAN LUIS REY, Oceanside, California 18 de marzo del 2012

    Querida Familia Parroquial,

Jess acepta a Nicodemo

tes. An as, mi amigo sacerdote est en trminos muy

buenos con sus colegas Protestantesel pastor protes-

    tante local y su esposa. Pero esta gente buena no se atre-ve a reunirse abiertamente como amigos a la luz del da;

    to.
