    THE SAN DAMIANO CROSS

    The byzantine-style San Damiano

Cross hung in the church of San

Damiano, a small simple chapel outside

the walls of Assisi. It was while kneeling

in prayer before the cross, unsure of

what to do with his life and troubled,

that St. Francis heard the voice of Our

Lord speak to his heart. Francis, Jesus

whispered, go and repair my house,

which as you can see is falling into ru-

    ins. Francis immediately began

to repair San Damiano which had beenabandoned and was

    falling down. Later,

    Francis would

    come to understand

    that the calling was

    to repair the

household of God, the family of the

Church, calling people to peace, recon-

    ciliation and Gospel simplicity.

The cross is painted. Christ is portrayed

as standing peacefully in the foreground. His facial expression and upright posi-

    tion emphasized his ascension into

    heaven. Detailed renderings of charac-

ters and events in the Passion of Christ

    surround his image.

The design of the San Damiano Cross

    symbolizes love overcoming the agony

    of crucifixion.

The Basilica of Santa Chiara in Assisi

houses the original wooden cross in a

special chapel where people can pray

before it today as St. Francis did over

Francisco empez in-

mediatamente a reparar a San Damiano

    que haba sido

    abandonada y estaba

    cayndose. Ms tarde,

    Francisco comprendera

    gelio.

La cruz es pintada. Cristo es representa-

do parado pacficamente en primer plano.

    From The Pastors Desk

    Dear Parish Family,

Peace and all good! Pace e bene! Paz y bien! Pax et bo-num! La paix et toute bonne! Fred och allt gott!

No matter in what language we express it, this simplegreeting and blessing of the Italian-born Saint Francis ofAssisi (1181-1226) reaches across time, geography and cul-

ture to embrace the entire world. In this, the prayer, hope, and blessing of Francis echoes the desire and determinationof Jesus for the unity and harmony of all humankind: that, indeed, we may all be one.

Father. what You have hidden from the learned and theclever you have revealed to the merest children, Jesus praysin todays Gospel from Matthew (11:25-30), which we arepermitted to use this weekend in place of the usual readingsfor Ordinary Time. Francis both longed for and, ultimately, possessed this openness and simplicity of heart that Jesuspraises. Francis was simple, but no simpleton. The simplicitywith which he was graced came only through and after a lifeof constant struggle and ultimately, complete surrender toGods Presence and Will for him in his life. It is the same

simplicity to which we are called as followers of Jesus andadmirers of Francis and Clare of Assisi.

Driving home on Highway 5 from Carlsbad last Friday, Iwas listening to an interview with a celebrated rabbi fromJerusalem. He was telling a great storyand I got so in-volved in it, I missed my turnoff and headed towards the LasPulgas exit instead. But it was worth the detour: A group ofchildren decided to play hide and seek. Each went off totheir own special hiding place. After a while, the rabbipassed by and found one of the children standing behind atree crying. Why are you so upset? he asked the child.Because no one has tried to find me, the little boy sobbed.Dont cry, said the rabbi. Thats exactly how God feels a lotof the time. Sometimes it seems like no one is interested infinding Him either.

Francis spent his life trying to find Godin all things, through all things, and above all things. He did so with single-minded determination and simplicity. And his commitmentcost him a good deal: he gave up family, friends, wealth, reputation, and even compromised his physical health. ButGod blessed him greatly for his thirst and search. And Fran-cis has shared that gift with us across the ages in his greatinsight into the brother-and-sisterhood of all of Gods Crea-tion, most beautifully expressed in his Canticle of Crea-tion, a version of which we, as a Franciscan parish, oftensing in the liturgy.

We are called not just to admire great saints like Francis ofAssisi. We are invited and challenged to imitate their bestqualities in order to get closer to God and to allow God toget closer to us. In the case of Francis, we are asked to dareto follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ in the context of ourdaily lives. And, as Gods children, to do so earnestly and simply.

    God bless,

    Fr. Chuck

8 |PARROQUIAMISION SAN LUIS REY, Oceanside, California 2 de octubre del 2011

    Del Escritorio del Prroco

    Querida Familia Parroquial,

Paz y todo bien! Peace and all good! Pace e bene! Pax et

bonum!

nio.

Nosotros estamos llamados a no solo admirar a santos im-

portantes como Francisco de Ass. Nosotros estamos invita-

    dad y simplemente.

    Dios les bendiga,

    Padre Chuck
