SOCIAL CONCERNS EASTER FOOD BASKET PROGRAM

It’s me once again to think of Easter, the celebra on which is the basis for our beau ful faith! By sharing our love with those who are less fortunate we can help others in a tangible way while demonstra ng our very real belief in the Resurrect-ed Christ. We o en plan our holiday dinners without stopping to realize what a true blessing it is – especially in these difficult economic mes - that we are able to provide for our families. Sadly, too many hard working people in our community are not able to do so. O en we take our good fortune as a given rather than consciously remembering that it is truly a gi from God. God gives to us so generously and in return He only asks that we love our neighbors as we love ourselves. Sharing what we have is the most sincere proof of our love of God shown through our love of others. With your help we will give out holiday food baskets again this Easter. Thanks to our food providers we can put together a food box with a good holiday feast with all the trimmings plus a li le extra for just $40.00 per family! When you put your dona on in the collec on, please be sure it is clearly marked for an “Easter Basket.” We will gladly ac-cept dona ons of turkeys, hams and canned goods which we ask that you bring directly to the Social Concerns Department in the Lore o House during our normal business hours Tues-Sat. 8:00am-4:00pm). We appreciate you checking the expira-

on dates on all donated cans and packages of food. If you have any ques ons, I can be reached at 760-547-0708. Thank you for all you do to help us feed the poor during the holidays and throughout the year. God bless you all.

ANNUAL LENTEN COLLECTION:

Next weekend has been designated for the 2015 Annual Lenten Collec on. This collec on supports the works of the Catholic Relief Services, the Church in Africa and the Church in La n America. Please prepare to respond with generosity to this worthwhile collec on.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

By par cipa ng in Lent, we are engaging in pa erns that have endured across the centuries. From very early

mes, we have the sense of accompanying the elect on their journey to the font. From as long ago as the fourth century, we receive Lent as forty days to shake the dust from our spirituality and reorder our conduct. Then, fas ng was not seen as a strict duty, yet it seems it was widely observed. Think of the rules of politeness and courtesy upon which everyone agrees. Fas ng was also seen as a social duty, since food was in short supply as winter wore on, and the weak and the sick had the first claim on what remained on hand. As a boost to the fas ng of the body, the church developed a richer spiritual fare, including celebra on of the Eucharist every day. This prac ce began in Rome by the sixth century. Weekday Mass was only at designated “sta ons.” The pope would arrive on horseback at the sta onal church. In those days, although the catechu-menate was already in eclipse, there were pre-bap smal ac vi es at the sta onal Masses: the giving of the Lord’s Prayer, prayers for the godparents, and constant refer-ences to bap sm.

Lent is an old Anglo-Saxon word which originally simply meant the spring season. We are told by those who know that it derives from the Germanic root for long, because in spring the days visibly lengthen. These days, as we move towards Lent, you can almost sense nature readying to move, to shoot forth with new life, fresh greenness and hope-filled promise in the steadily lengthening days.

The season of Lent, on the personal level, is also an invita on to newness, new beginnings, renewed and re-stored rela onships with the Lord and with one another. The Gospels call it conversion, change of direc on, change of heart. It may be just a slight correc on, or it may be something more like a Road to Damascus-type conversion, a complete turn-around. But whatever we are invited to, we must believe that, with the help of the Lord, it is possible.

Who would have thought my shrivl’d heart Could have recovered greenness? So marveled the poet George Herbert, poe cally expressing what many familiar Gospel characters experi-enced through the healing and forgiving ministry of Jesus: it is possible to recover greenness, even though our hearts may have become shriveled by so many nega ve experiences. It is always possible to begin again, to look forward with renewed hope. Although we may be unfaithful, he is always faithful.

Call to mind Zacchaeus, or the woman taken in adultery, think of Peter - in each case a new beginning was made possible by the compassionate words or ac ons of Jesus. Think of the great Lenten image of the Prodi-gal Son and the prodigal love of the father: the young man is enabled to rise from the depths and come home to warmth, welcome and rejoicing. A new beginning, if ever there was one.

Our calling to the single life, married life, priesthood or consecrated life does not take away our humanity or our human weakness. Each day presents us with irrita ons, tempta ons – major or minor, lost opportuni es to do good, missed opportuni es for new beginnings. Take one of Pope Francis’ recurring themes: making peace, renewing broken rela onships, being channels of reconcilia on.

What he says to couples applies equally to communi es: It is not unusual to quarrel; there’s always some-thing. Perhaps you were angry. Perhaps the plates were flying. But please remember this: never end the day without making peace. Never. Never. Never. It may be sufficient to say: Sorry, I was red. Or a small gesture. But make peace.. Perhaps we could begin there!
