STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT

Today’s reading from the Gospel of Luke offers us the first words of Jesus as he begins his public ministry. The words reflect his understanding of his Spirit-anointed mission. His words are his “Mission Statement.” Good stewards rejoice in being followers of Jesus. They realize that Jesus’ commission is their commission as well. They embrace it and adopt it as their own. We, too, have “glad tidings” to bring to a suffering world. This year, how will we fulfill Christ’s commission in the world in which he has placed us, using the gifts he has entrusted to us?

LENT FASTING AND ABSTINENCE

Fasting (the eating of one main meal and two smaller meals with no in between snacks) applies to those be-tween ages 21-59 who are in good health and would not be hampered in their work by fasting. The only days that are legislated by church law are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The other days of Lent and/or all Fridays are encouraged but not obligated by law. Abstinence (the exclusion of meat for the entire day) includes anyone from age 7 and up to any age where the loss of meat for one day would not be harmful to one’s health. The days of full Abstinence are Ash Wednesday and all Fridays during Lent. Lent is a time for us to voluntarily choose to do pen-ance and mortification as an expression of gratitude to God for what Christ did for us through His Own Suffering and Death. It is an attempt to respond to the love that He so willingly gave to us.

A QUOTE FROM POPE FRANCIS

But, careful! Jesus does not say, Go off and do things on your own. No! That is not what he is saying. Jesus says, Go, for I am with you! This is what is so beautiful for us; it is what guides us. If we go out to bring his Gos-pel with love, with a true apostolic spirit, with parrhesia, he walks with us, he goes ahead of us, and he gets there first. As we say in Spanish, nos primerea. By now you know what I mean by this. It is the same thing that the Bible tells us. In the Bible, the Lord says: I am like the flower of the almond. Why? Because that is the first flower to blossom in the spring. He is always the first! This is fundamental for us: God is always ahead of us! When we think about going far away, to an extreme out-skirt, we may be a bit afraid, but in fact God is already there. Jesus is waiting for us in the hearts of our brothers and sisters, in their wounded bodies, in their hardships, in their lack of faith. -The Church of Mercy

LIVING AS THE BODY OF CHRIST

Some of Saint Paul’s best known and most beloved im-agery is contained in the pas-sages from First Corinthians that we have heard last week and this week: the many gifts granted by the one same Spirit and the many members making up the one Body of Christ. Few passages from sacred scripture more accu-rately sum up how Christian vocations work together. Unlike some of Paul’s other writings, which are a product of the social and religious conventions of his time, these enable us to look at our own lives and the lives of those around us to discern what gifts, what voca-tions the Holy Spirit has given for the good of all. We can likewise know the joys and sorrows of the other mem-bers of the Body and share in them for the strengthening of the whole Body of Christ.

TO BE A PERSON OF MERCY

We do not have to travel or perform heroic deeds to be a person of mercy. These days, it is difficult to fulfil the duties we already have as an adult, parent or student – a son/daughter, a sibling, a friend, or the member of a sports team. Saint Thérèse of Lisieux was a young French nun who lived in an enclosed order. She was unknown, unimportant. In her convent she spoke little but smiled a lot. She was easy to live with. After her death, her diary revealed a young woman of strong patience and love. Although she lived away from society she prayed all the time for those working in the missions, for sinners and for those who needed God’s mercy the most. She was often irritated by the older nuns in her enclosure but never showed it. Instead she asked to work in the hard-est areas of the convent and prayed for an increase in mercy in herself for those nuns who were harsh with her or who annoyed her. She died in obscurity, but God hon-ored her efforts and she became a saint. Wherever we are, we are always in the perfect place to proclaim mer-cy. And it is often doing this in the most subdued way that is valued the most. This week, let us live together the Extraordinary Jubi-lee Year of Mercy proclaimed by Pope Francis. The year began on 8 December 2015, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, and will conclude on 20 November 2016, the Feast of Christ the King. Come to the Old Mission Church and walk through our Holy Doors in this Jubilee Year. Invite your friends and family to step through what Pope Francis calls ‘A door that opens in the Church in order to reach out to those who, for many reasons, are far away.’

CITA DEL PAPA FRANCISCO

"Pero, ¡cuidado! Jesús no dice, sal y haz cosas por tu cuenta. ¡No! Eso no es lo que está diciendo. Jesús dice: Ve, no temas pues yo estoy contigo.
