2:00–4:00 pm and 6:30– 8:30pm

REFLECT: How strong is my own founda on in Scripture? Consider this ques on in three dimensions: intellectual strength (knowledge, understanding), spiritual strength (prayer, virtue, contempla on), moral strength (decision-making, guidance for living).

ACT: Make a commitment to read the Sunday readings, either before or a er you go to Mass. Take me just to “be” with the Word. Allow your own inner dialogue with God to con nue beyond the celebra on.

PRAY: Holy Spirit, breath of God, through Sacred Scripture you reveal who you are, and who we are called to be. Breathe on us. You enter the house of our worship and speak lovingly to each of us. Help me to listen with my whole hearts.

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT

The second reading from Saint Paul to the Romans is a favorite of those involved in the ministry of evangeliza-

on. There are no “secret” disciples of the Lord. Those who exercise good stewardship of their faith realize that publicly iden fying themselves as followers of Christ has a cleansing effect on their lives. Openly confessing Christ makes them more conscious of how they live their daily lives. Are we content to priva ze our faith or are we good stewards of a faith that we share, make public, and regularly iden fy as a life in Christ?

A QUOTE FROM POPE FRANCIS

I think this is truly the most wonderful experience we can have: to belong to a people walking, journeying through history together with our Lord, who walks among us! We are not alone; we do not walk alone. We are part of the one flock of Christ that walks together.” -The Church of Mercy

MENTAL HEALTH MINISTRY PRESENTS "FINDING A PURPOSE IN LONELINESS"

Almost all of us have experienced the pain of loneli-ness. While we generally think of it as a nega ve and unwanted thing, loneliness can actually be a gi in dis-guise. It signals that we need to take care of ourselves; it can even be a way God gets us to look at new possibili-

es in our lives. What a perfect focus as we start a new year! Come to an interac ve presenta on on Thursday on Saturday, Feb. 27, at 10 a.m. in the parish dining room. Everyone is welcome. For more informa on about this workshop or about any other mental health need, leave a message on the Mental Health Ministry voicemail: 760-757-3250 x203.

Thoughts for the Year of Mercy HUNGER FACTS – DID YOU KNOW

• 795 million people around the world, just over 1 in 9 people, are undernourished.

• Poor nutri on causes nearly half of the deaths in chil-dren under 5—more than 3 million children annually.

• Nearly half of the world’s popula on lives on less than $2 dollars a day.

Imagine what it is like to live on less than $2 a day. Re-flect for a moment on a typical living situa on for billions of poor people in the world: First, imagine your living room. Take away all the other rooms of your house. Your whole family lives in this one room. Take out the furni-ture, except for a few blankets, a kitchen table and one chair. Take away all the clothing, except one set of cloth-ing for each member of the family and one pair of shoes. Empty the pantry and refrigerator except for a small bag of rice, some sugar and salt, and a few vegetables for tonight’s dinner. Shut off the water in the bathroom and remove the sink, the toilet and the electronic wiring. Take away your TVs and cable, computer and internet, etc. Look around your new home. That is how billions of people live in the world today. Our faith calls us to respond to the scandal of hun-ger. Pope Francis has asserted, “If there are children in so many parts of the world who have nothing to eat, that is not news, it seems normal. It cannot be so!” In James 2:14-16, James urges us, “What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister has nothing to wear and has no food for the day, and one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well,’ but you do not give them the necessi es of the body, what good is it?” As we search for the spirit of the Lord and peace in our hearts and our lives on our Lenten journey, St. Francis suggested this path -- “all those who love the Lord with their whole heart, soul and mind, with their whole strength, love their neighbors as themselves. Happy and blessed are these men and women while they do such things and persevere in doing them, because the Spirit of the Lord will rest upon them.” (1LtF 1:-7)

Today, may we have the grace to live conscious lives of care and service and so respond to the scandal of hun-ger.

DOCENTS NEEDED

If you are a former elementary school teacher or a teacher of any kind, we could use your help. We have a need for another Sunday docent to conduct behind the scenes tours at 1pm with visi ng adults and possibly teens. We also have a need for more docents to help with our fourth grade presenta ons in the Historic Mis-sion Church on weekdays at 10am. Currently, we have a skeleton crew of docents. More would really help. Don’t be shy. Please contact Brother Chris, OFM, at 760-757-3651 x 170 or email me at [email protected]

Overall, 82% of respondents felt either ‘connected’ or ‘somewhat connected’ to the parish.

In addi on to Mass, in which ways are you involved with the Parish? Choose all that apply.

NEWS FROM THE PARISH ADVISORY BOARD ABOUT THE PARISH SURVEY:

BEING INVOLVED & CONNECTED

The intent of the survey was for the Advisory Board to listen – and learn. One important thing we learned was that a great number of parishioners who a end church on Sunday are involved and feel con-nected to the parish, in many different ways. There’s no one best way, other than Mass & Sacraments, to be connected to the Church. 34.6% find a ending func ons as a way to be involved. A significant um-ber, 29% are not currently involved outside of Mass – many of those falling into the age group that would likely have small children at home.
