    August 25, 2013 - 21st Sunday In Ordinary Time| 3

    Fr. Adrians Corner

We have just recovered from two wonderfulcelebra ons at the Mission, namely, the Heritage Ball and the feast of our patron San Luis Rey. Both weredeligh ully successful and enjoyed by all who came.Congratula ons and thanks to Maureen Sullivan and theHeritage Ball Commi ee, and to Fr. Luis, Laura Chun, andthe San Luis Rey Fes val Commi ee for jobs well done. The entertainment and food at both were excellent. Thanks to the choirs who par cipated in the variousliturgies for San Luis Rey, and to all our ministers, serversand behind-the-scenes helpers who did our saint proud.

The news that our former bookkeeper at the parish,Martha Sandling , has died, came as a shock to the sta ff and many parishioners who knew her and workedalongside her for many years. Martha was a lovelywoman and a valued colleague who had re red justthree years ago. She had known sorrow in her own lifewith the deaths of her husband and two sons herstrong faith enabled her to cope with such great loss.Martha died suddenly while visi ng her daughter Debbiein Bakers eld, and her funeral will take place at theMission Church on Saturday 31 August at 1:00 p.m. withinurnment in the Mission Cemetery immediately a er-wards. May she rest in peace!

I had a request from a parishioner asking if there issomeone who would like to be a live-in companion forhis wife who has a disability. They would provide a homeand some support for a woman who would provesuitable. For more informa on please contact medirectly at the parish.

Parishioners have been asking me about the possibil-ity of a pilgrimage to Rome and Assisi in 2014. I am inthe process of making inquiries and looking at possibledates. If you are interested in a Franciscan Trip to someof the holy places associated with St. Francis and St.Clare, send me an email: [email protected].

Our Religious Educa on Programs are preparing toget underway once again in September. If your young

son or daughter is ready for the Sacraments of Con rma-on or First Communion, please call the parish o ffice

soon for enrollment details. If your child has specialneeds call Larry LaGrasta in our R.E. Dept. who is alwayshappy to help. The RCIA Program is available once againbeginning in September. Mary Dorso and her team aredelighted to welcome adults who want to becomeCatholic and Catholics who are returning to the prac ceof the faith and wish to know it be er. For further

informa on please call the parish o ffice or call MaryDorso directly.

The Franciscan School of Theologyat Mission San LuisRey is almost ready to receive its rst students. Muchhas been done to make the environment suitable andready for academic work classrooms, library, and areordered worship space at the newly named St. ClareChapel. Offices for professors and administra ve sta ff have been added. This new venture with the Universityof San Diego marks the beginning of a new chapter forthe Franciscan Intellectual Tradi on in this part of theworld. We wish the faculty, sta ff and students well andmuch success in the coming semester.

In conclusion, Id like to share a few lines from anaddress to the Bishops of Brazil given by Pope Francis just a few weeks ago. The Pope is speaking about thosewho choose to leave the Church and how we might helpthem to return to Jerusalem.

Today, we need a Church capable of walking at peoples side, of doing more than simply listening tothem; a Church which accompanies them on their journey; a Church able to make sense of the night contained in the ight of so many of our brothers and sisters from Jerusalem; a Church which realizes that thereasons why people leave also contain reasons why they can eventually return. But we need to know how tointerpret, with courage, the larger picture.

I would like all of us to ask ourselves today: are we s lla Church capable of warming hearts? A Church capable

of leading people back to Jerusalem? Of bringing themhome? Jerusalem is where our roots are: Scripture, catechesis, sacraments, community, friendship with theLord, Mary and the apostles Are we s ll able to speak of these roots in a way that will revive a sense of wonder at their beauty?

Have a wonderful week and God bless.

    Fr. Adrian

Para ms informacin comunquense directamente conmi-go.

    Padre Adrian
