The film Mission Impossible 3 is directed by Jeffrey Abrams, He is an American film and television producer, screenwriter, director, actor, and composer. The main star in the film Mission Impossible 3 is Tom Cruise.

Lighting and Colour

In the lighting in the trailer for the film Mission Impossible 3, low key lighting is used in the first half of the trailer. I believe this effect was used to make the viewers want to go and watch the film because the dark and mysterious colours gives the viewer sense of danger and the secrets hidden in the dark.

In the trailer also two colours that stand out to me, yellow and red. A bright yellow used for the explosions in the trailer and the red was used for the text and I also noticed it was used in the mis-en-scene for the costume for women in the dress. These colours were maybe used as red; is the colour for danger and love. This gives the viewers feeling that the woman in the red dress has a part in the film to do with danger, love or both. The colour yellow was used in the explosions but you only get the massive explosion of the car on the bridge about one minute into the trailer, it makes you wait at the edge of your seat for the moment to happen.

Camera work

A close-up is used in the trailer but then it moves into an extreme close-up towards the characters eye. This is when we actually realise he is the good guy in the film cause at the beginning his standing on top of the building used a crane/establishing movement shot you wonder who he is. The extreme close-up changes to the scanning of the eye which gives the viewers the understanding that he is an important character in the film and is a spy and that maybe he is more superior as he could have access to important documents that are restricted. In the close-up, he is looking down at the

audience which could suggest he knows something we don’t know which makes the audience want to know what the secret is.

Editing

In the trailer for the film Mission Impossible 3 a lot of different fades are used. Fast fades then includes slow fades, the viewers would expect the action and explosions to start but it makes you wait, it goes back to even slower fades and switches to a blank black screen from the cuts in the film. The trailer effects you in such a way that it makes you wait for the best parts, it leaves you at the edge of your seat, waiting for the action and explosions.

Also in the trailer the creater includes eyeline match between the women and the man, but because its trailer this could be a jump shot as the creater of this trailer wants you to see this part. It effects the audience watching the trailer as she says “what is it you’re not telling me?” and it fades into the darkness then you see his face. This effects us because you think they have a relationship possibly and believe that she is in danger from something that we don’t what or who it is and that she needs to be protected from the male which is the stereotype of the damsel in distress.

Sound

The trailer includes non-diegetic sound at the beginning of the trailer, it has added in the sound of a siren (a police siren maybe). It could be just ambient sound to set the scene of the city but I think it has included this choice of non-diegetic sound because at the start the man is just standing at the top of the building looking down and hearing the sirens makes you wonder what will happen and what’s going on which builds intense to the audience to carry on watching the trailer which will process them to watch the film.

The soundtrack in the trailer is the usual theme song you would expect to hear for a action spy film, which sets the tone of the film that its just one of the normal action films but audiences still go to watch the film in

cinemas which is a massive effect on audiences that no matter what they like to watch action films.

A voice over is also included in the trailer, the dialogue spoken by the unseen character is a count down to something ‘3, 2, 1’ and then it goes black and then diegetic sound is included as the trailer suggests the bady in the film says ‘then I’m going to kill you, right in front of her’. Both the voice and the dialogue work well together and effect us giving us the suspicion of the bady and what the countdown is for. Is it for the man who has to protect his girlfriend? Or is it the girlfriend who needs protecting? This part of the trailer sets the tone of the film and gives the audience an understanding of the storyline of the film but doesn’t give too much away about the ending but then again, it’s a stereotypical action film which people go to see anyway and also ends with a happy ending.
