Financial Stewardship

IV Mission Basilica San Juan CapistranoLETTER FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Brothers and Sisters, One of the lovely images of parish life is that of a ‘faith family.’ As brothers and sis-ters in the Lord we are indeed bound together as a family with God our Father and our brother, Jesus Christ. It is with that image in mind that I once again share with you an update regarding issues pertaining to my health with my ‘family in faith.’ I have fortunately recovered completely from the case of acute diverticulitis that I experienced at the beginning of July. I am grateful for the watchful care of doctors as well as their helpful suggestions to avoid another attack in the future. As they always say, “drink lots of water!” Issues, however, pertaining to my legs and the challenge that I continue to have in walking, remain. I am presently under the care of a very fine neurologist who is head of the UCI Neuromuscular Center. Under their guidance and direction, I continue to go through a variety of diagnostic procedures in the attempt to pinpoint a diagnosis. While the exact diagnosis remains somewhat of a mystery, I have recently been given medication that relaxes the “stiffness” in my legs in the hope that it would assist me to walk with a slightly more normal gait. Finding the right dosage is a bit tricky – too little will do nothing, too much can weaken my legs and create the possibility of falling! In order to ease the difficulty in walking down the aisle as well as up and down the multiple stairs in the Basilica, at some Masses you may notice that I will begin Mass at the chair and proclaim the Gospel and preach from the altar rather than the ambo. This minimizes walking up and down the stairs and is a bit easier for me. I thank you for your understanding. In the next few weeks, there will be some additional testing that will be a bit more invasive yet hopefully will assist in arriving at an appropriate diagnosis and treatment. In the meantime, I know that I can count on your continuing prayers. As we begin our new week in Christ, let us commend to the mercy and love of the Lord, all those who have gone before marked with the sign of faith, especially Maria Michela. May they rest in peace. Always forward! Msgr. Art

Faithful Citizenship As General Elections near on November 2nd, we rejoice in the freedom of expression and the right of indi-viduals in our country to voice their personal convictions regarding candidates and propositions. However, in keeping with the policy of the California Conference of Catholic Bishops, we respect the individual right of Catholics to conscientiously form their own consciences regarding these important issues as we cast our votes on November 2nd. Consequently, be aware that any voter guides or candidate list that may be distrib-uted on public property around the Church as Elections near or even placed on your windshields here in the Basilica parking lot, do not necessarily represent the official position of the Catholic Church but rather that of political action committees not associated with the Catholic Church. For information that might prove helpful in exercising your right as a Faithful Citizen of this Country, please consult the web site of the Cali-fornia Conference of Catholic Bishops: www.cacatholic.org

Mission Parish School Students Study the Legendary Father John O’Sullivan The 6th grade class at Mission Parish School enjoyed a day at the SJC Historical Society Museum viewing the exhibit which commemorates the 100th year anniversary of Father John O’Sullivan’s arrival to San Juan Capis-trano. Father O’Sullivan is credited as being the great-restorer of the Mission and is also well-known for estab-lishing our historic Mission School in 1929 in conjunction with his Silver Jubilee. As Meagan Wagner, a 6th grader at Mission Parish School eloquently wrote in her essay about Father O’Sullivan “He was a carpenter, photogra-pher, architect, and priest who was tireless and deter-mined. When he died he was originally buried in Los Angeles, but his body has since been moved to the mis-sion burial grounds, and it is still there today.” Mission Parish School will be honoring Father O’Sullivan throughout the 2010/2011 school year. For admissions inquiries and gen-eral information, please contact Mission Parish School at 949-234-1385.

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY A Eucharistic Celebration for all the Missions of the World October 24th World Mission Sunday, organized by the Propagation of the Faith, is a day set aside for Catholics worldwide to recom-mit themselves to the Church's missionary activity through prayer and sacrifice. Every year the needs of the Catholic Church in the Missions grow - as new dioceses are formed, as new seminaries are opened because of the growing number of young men hearing Christ's call to follow Him as priests, as areas devastated by war or natural disaster are rebuilt, and as other areas, long suppressed, are opening up to hear the message of Christ and His Church. That is why the involvement and commitment of Catholics from around the world is so urgently needed. Offerings from Catholics in the United States, on World Mission Sunday and throughout the year, are combined with offerings to the Propaga-tion of the Faith worldwide. Mission dioceses - about 1,100 at this time - receive regular annual assistance from the funds collected. In addition, these mission dioceses submit requests to the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peo-ples for assistance, among other needs, for catechetical programs, seminaries, the work of Religious Communities, for communication and transportation needs, and for the building of chapels, churches, orphanages and schools. These needs are matched with the funds gathered in each year. The world's national directors of the Propagation of the Faith vote on these requests, matching the funds available with the greatest needs. These funds are then distributed, in their entirety, to mission dioceses throughout the world.
