The diocese is working with John to setup a new computerized financial system through the use of a package called ‘Quickbooks’. The new system will enable John to easily manage the books for the entire parish affording a greater level of detail, and will aid Fr. With the implementation of the new system comes a new collection envelope for parishioners who Gift-Aid. If you currently use at the offertory collection, your number is about to change. Across the nine churches 1,500 sets of envelopes were being ordered on an annual basis, where as in reality we have less than 500 people who Gift-Aid. The excesses was due to each church having its own envelope, minimum print runs, costs etc. associated with printing. From April there will be ONE ‘All Saints’ envelope and with the Gift-Aid of each church will being tracked through the individual envelope number. So when you collect your new envelopes in the coming weeks, don’t panic, a mistake hasn’t been made, your number will have changed.

1st SUNDAY OF LENT - Cycle C – 10.03.19.

“Lent is a time to rediscover the direction of life. Because in life’s journey, as in every journey, what really matters is not to lose sight of the goal” These words of Pope Francis from his Ash Wednesday homily this week set the scene for our Lenten journey. With these words, we have begun our Lenten pilgrimage. The Church has made this season a time of recollection and penance. Entering into the forty days, we are faced with those things in our lives that exile us from the Lord, causing us to wonder aimlessly, further and further away from relationship with Him who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. If we truly desire to rediscover the direction of our life, we must enter the desert with Our Lord; we must face those temptations within our own lives, which the Devil continues to throw at us. In facing those temptations in our life, we are able to rid the Devil of the power he holds over us; we are strengthened and fortified for battle. Our ultimate goal, which the Holy Father prompts us always to keep our eyes focussed on, is that intimate relationship with Almighty God in heaven, sharing in the heavenly banquet. Throughout this season of Lent, there are many opportunities in the parish to rid ourselves of the clutter caused by our sins. The enclosed Lenten Schedule leaflet highlights those particular opportunities to deepen our faith and relationship with God.

A Prayer for Lent

Forgive those things we have done which have

caused you sadness, and those things we should have done that would

have brought you joy. In both we have failed

ourselves and you. Bring us back to that place where our journey

began, when we said that we would follow the way that you first trod. Lead us to the

cross and meet us there.

Amen.

Lent “Lent is the time to rediscover the direction of life. Because in

not to lose sight of the goal” ~ Pope Francis ~

Lenten Alms

The Lenten Alms are the traditional way in which the body of the Church works together in sacrifice for

the aid of the poor and less fortunate. Our Alms contributions this year will go toward the Diocesan

Refugee project assisting the Diocese in the rehoming of refugees who come to Wales. As per the

announcements on our noticeboards last weekend, Newport will be coming to the aid of another refugee

family as we prepare to welcome a young, exiled, Iraqi Catholic family into the presbytery at St.

Gabriel’s.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation

As well as the usual opportunity to experience the mercy of the Lord in the Sacrament of Reconciliation,

during the season of Lent, at St. Mary’s, a priest will be available to hear Confessions between 09:00am

to 09:45m, Monday to Friday.

During the weekday, in the other churches around the parish, the sacrament of Reconciliation is available

half an hour before the evening Mass, for twenty minutes.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be available at St. Mary’s between 10:30am and 4:30pm on

Saturday, 13th April. There will be Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament throughout the day; an

opportunity to spend time with the Lord in the immediate lead-up to the Easter season.

In Pope Francis’ The Joy of the Gospel, the Holy Father said: “the Church

must be a place of mercy freely given”. During the season of Lent,

throughout the churches in the parish, a priest will be available at a set time,

and will be available to experience the mercy of the Lord in the Sacrament

of Reconciliation. The Light is on For You will take place on Mondays in

Lent between 6:00pm and 8:00pm. Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament

will take place during this time. Locations throughout the parish will be:

St. Michael’s Church & St. Julius the Martyr Church on Monday, 18th March 2019

St. Anne’s Church & St. Gabriel’s Church on Monday, 25th March 2019

Ss. Bail & Gwladys Church & St. David’s Church on Monday, 1st April 2019

St. David Lewis & Ss. Julius, Aaron & David on Monday, 8th April 2019

Lenten Study Group – The Eucharist: the source and summit of the Christian Life

The Eucharist is the ‘source and summit of the Christian life’, which is why our attendance and

participation at Mass is so vital for the life of faith. But, for many of us, we do not truly appreciate or

understand what it is we come to when we come to Mass. We can get lost in the words, and wonder

about our actions. So come along and discover the depth and richness of the Mass as we study our central

action over three weeks.

There will be two opportunities to participate in the study group: Fridays: 2:00pm at St. Mary’s

Institute, and then repeated on Fridays at St. David’s, after the evening Mass.

Week One – Friday, 15th March – Preparing to encounter: the Introductory Rites

Week Two – Friday, 22nd March – Heart speaks to heart: the Liturgy of the Word

Week Three – Friday, 29th March – The supreme encounter: the Liturgy of the Eucharist

Station Mass

The “Station Mass” originated in Rome under the auspices of Pope Gregory the

Great (590-604). The Bishop of Rome would make a daily pilgrimage to one of the

forty churches in Rome dedicated to the memory of the martyrs and saints. Pilgrims

would walk in the footsteps of the saints and join the Pope in a penitential exercise

before celebrating Mass at each “stopping place “ or “station”. In doing so, they

were also following the example of Jesus who went out into the desert and fasted

for forty days and forty nights in preparation for his mission. It is this “journey”

which forms the spiritual background to the forty days of Lent and the journey each

of us has to make into the desert of our own hearts and lives.

Archbishop George Stack will lead the deanery Station Mass at St. David’s Church, Maesglas, on

Wednesday, 27th March 2019, beginning at 7:00pm.
