STATEMENT

I saw Lt. Warren’s ship flaming out of the bomb bays and wing tanks, the ship pulled out of formation to the right and dropped its bombs. The ship then turned over and when last seen was losing altitude still flaming from the bomb bays. I saw one chute come out of the ship.

STATEMENT

On the morning of July 25, 1944 on a raid over Linz, Austria, ship #23 and its crew flying our right wing was hit by enemy fighters and burst into flames. It peeled off to the left and going over on its back headed earthward in a mass of flames. This was the last I saw of them. I was in the nose turret when it all happened and as far as I know no parachutes were seen.

1. This headquarters is in receipt of a request for details concerning the circumstances under which the subject named was reported missing (in action) on the date shown.

2. A search of the reports of this headquarters indicates that a Missing Air Crew Report, as required by A.G.D. letter, 23 May 1943, (AG 360.33 (5-21-43)OB-S-AF-M), has not been received to date in this case. It is requested that this report be forwarded with the least practicable delay.

The a/c was one of a formation. The a/c was hit on the tail. It became detached from the formation and 9 parachutes were seen to leave the a/c. Single parts fell off and it crashed on a farmers house.

Was he injured? Yes, shot through the right eye.

Where was he when last seen? Just behind the escape hatch.

Any explanation of his fate based in part or wholly on supposition: He came to the camera hatch yelling “My Face!” His right eye was gone and he was out of his head. I told him to step back while I opened the hatch and then bail out. He stepped back bt I did not see him again. Flames prevented any further view. I think he collapsed and died in the plane.

Where was he when last seen? Crewmember was seen coming out of tail turret,face covered with blood. Was told to step off hatch so it could be opened by waist gunner. Events hazy from then on.

If you don’t know, say: “No knowledge”. Only saw radio operator bail out before me but all other nine bailed out before plane hit the ground.

13. When, where, and in what condition did you last see any members not already described above? On the ground I saw nose gunner (injured), navigator (injured), pilot (injured). All others slightly burned but otherwise alright.

Where?.

If not, why not? Possibly because of injuries.

Last contact or conversation just prior to or at time of loss of plane: Checked in on crew position check just before we were hit.

Was he injured? Yes. Right side of face shattered. Bled Profusely.

Where was he when last seen? I last saw him by the rear escape hatch.

Any hearsay information: Our plane was set afire immediately after being hit. With my position out (ball turret) I groped my way to the waist to help fight the fire. There I noticed Glen Myers standing on the escape hatch. Knowing we had to bail out the radio operator motioned him to get off the door. This he did. I then had to go back to my turret to get my chute; by then I could hardly see and bailed out without seeing or remembering another thing.

Any explanation of his fate based in part or wholly on supposition: Could have bailed out and then through loss of blood from his wounds have died in German hands. Also he could have succumbed to his injuries before biling out and gone down with the plane.

His name was Glen Myers.

They were in good condition except the pilot who was bruised about the face and hands. The enlisted men were in the same camp as I was. They were all in good condition.

Did he bail out? As I was in the top turret I saw little of what happened in the rear of the plane.

Where? The others in the rear of the plane said he did not.

If not, why not? They told me he was injured.

Where was he when last seen? Just before the fire forced the rest of the others to jump.

Last contact or conversation just prior to or at time of loss of plane: He called the fighters at 7 o’clock low and started firing.


Where was he when last seen? At turret door.

Any hearsay information: He tried to get out of turret but it appeared one eye was shot out and half his face gone – the tail was a mass of flames – it is believed he died en route to escape hatch.
