Principles Of Operation
•The radar observes the ocean surface in a semi-circle, 180 – 450 m away.•The radar frequency gives a strong echo from the capillary waves even during heavy precipitation, normally present at wind-speeds > 2 m/s. •The water particle velocity is measured by use of Pulse-Doppler technique and provides accurate measurements even in harsh weather. situations. The wave spectrum is calculated on this basis.•This is a unique feature of the SM-050 Wave and Current Radar.

SM-140 RangeFinder™The accurate and reliable microwave sensor
Miros Range FinderDeveloped in cooperation with theNorwegian Mapping Authority(Norwegian Hydrographic Service).
Measures the distance from the antenna plane to the sea surface using microwaves.
The distance is a weighted average over the footprint. The footprint size is determined by the antenna beam-width and the distance to the surface.
Up to 50 measurements per secondis averaged over a user selectableaveraging time to provide an accurate reading.

Wavex® Measurement principle• The Wavex® system measures sea state from digitized sea clutter images provided by a
marine X-band radar operated in short pulse mode. Radar signals are back-scattered off the sea surface, and the resulting image on the radar screen is known as sea clutter.
• Wave-like patterns are easily identified, and are caused by the modulation of the sea clutter cross section by the gravity waves. The modulation is due to grazing angle variation and shadowing, and there is an optimum range between approximately 1 and 10 degrees where appropriate radar image contrast is achieved.
• Square sized Cartesian sections are selected inside the radar images for further processing. Data from the Cartesian sections are combined in one directional wave spectrum.
• A minimum wind speed of 2 m/s must be present in order for Wavex® to record wave and current data. Recommended radar antenna mounting height is 15 – 90 meters above sea.
