MIRI: A 25-year-old man was burned to death after the multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) he was driving burst into flames shortly after colliding with a four-wheel-drive (4WD) at Miri Bypass on Sunday night.

Three other family members in the ill-fated vehicle survived, while the 4WD driver and his friend suffered minor injuries.

It is understood that the two vehicles were travelling in opposite directions, and the impact of the collision sent the ill-fated MPV, driven by Alen Bextur Jurip, 25, into the bushes by the roadside.

Alens 47-year-old mother and his two younger brothers were also in the vehicle, and they escaped with injuries.

They were later taken to Miri Hospital.

A police spokesman said before the 9.30pm incident, Alens family was heading towards Riam area from Pujut.

A witness claimed that the MPV flipped upon collision, and Alen was pinned to his seat.

Meanwhile, a passer-by, who wished to be known only as Conrad, said he and his family heard a woman screaming loudly when they drove past the scene of the accident.

The scream prompted me and other motorists to pull over to help, he said.

They managed to get Alens mother and his brothers out of the wreckage by smashing the MPVs windows.

Shortly thereafter, the car exploded.

We tried to put out the fire by throwing dirt onto the burning car, but failed, said Conrad.

Two fire engines from Lopeng fire station rushed to the scene when the alarm was raised.

Alens remains were later taken to Miri Hospital mortuary.

When contacted yesterday, Miri deputy police chief Supt Stanley Jonathan Ringgit, confirmed receiving a report on the incident.
