A TRANSCONTINENTAL CITY

Have you ever heard of a city which belongs to two different continents? Have you ever heard of a city which is a mixture of eastern and western life? That city exists, and its name is Istanbul.

Istanbul is located in north-western Turkey. It is its largest city, constituting the country’s economic, cultural, and historical heart, though not its

capital. The city’s name has changed throughout history, and has also been known as Byzantium and Constantinople.

The Bosphorus, the narrow strait between the Black Sea and the Marmara Sea, divides the city into the European and the Asian (Anatolian) side. But there are no borders, no tolls, you simply board a ferry on one side and get off on the other. Its commercial and historical centre lies in Europe, while a third of its population lives in Asia.

This beautiful city has a lot to offer to visitors:

Must-Sees: Istanbul is adorned with numerous mosques surrounding the city with their breathtaking beauty. Some of the most famous and beautiful are The Hagia Sophia and Sultanahmet Mosque (also called the Blue Mosque). Other attractions include Topkapi Palace and Harem, and the Galata Tower, from where you can enjoy a wonderful view of the city. A visit to one of the numerous Turkish baths is also worth doing.

Shopping: Istanbul is full of shopping malls and markets, the historical bazaars (especially the Grand Bazaar) being the most famous and typical. Here you can get delicious Turkish tea, or Turkish Delight, which is sweets of different flavours, pistachio being the most famous.

Eating Out: some typical dishes include doner (meat roasted on a vertical spit), lentil soup, kuru fasulye (white beans in a tomato sauce) and, of course, kebab and durum (kebab wrapped up in a flatbread) being the most famous.

THE TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE MILLENNIUM

A great natural wonder took place on 11th August 1999. At 11.20am in England, the Moon completely covered the Sun. It was the last total eclipse of the millennium and people in many parts of the world enjoyed the spectacle.

Solar eclipses occur when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, and the moon’s shadow covers part of the Earth. A total solar eclipse takes place when the Moon’s shadow covers the Sun entirely and blocks all direct sunlight, turning day into darkness.

In ancient times, people thought eclipses brought bad luck. They looked up at the sky with fear because they thought the Sun was dying. The ancient Chinese, for example, believed eclipses happened because a dragon was eating the Sun to symbolise that famine and disease was coming.

In the Ancient Holy Roman Empire it was believed that an eclipse symbolised the wrath of God, his anger with Man. It was seen as a threat from God to Mankind, “I am angry, satisfy me or Judgement Day will come”.

The Ancient Babylonians were the first civilisation to get the facts about eclipses correct. They discovered that eclipses were a celestial event, not something caused by Gods. They were able to successfully forecast solar and lunar eclipses.

Since Ancient Times solar eclipses have been also associated with the death of kings.

If you missed this spectacular eclipse, don’t worry, you’ll definitely be able to see more, but remember: be sure to use solar eclipse glasses to protect your eyes from the Sun’s harmful rays.

Interviewer: Good afternoon Peter and welcome to our programme “Wonders of Wildlife”. Thank you very much for coming.

Peter: Thank you for inviting me.

Interviewer: You are a very successful wildlife photographer and you have won several BBC awards. When did you become interested in photography?

Peter: When I was at university. I had taken some photos when I was younger, of course, but it was then when I found out that I really liked it.

Interviewer: Do you remember the first photograph you took?

Peter: Yes, of course, it was of a fox that visited my parents’ garden, when I was nine.

Interviewer: What is the most difficult photo you have ever taken?

Peter: Probably the picture of a lion eating a gazelle in Africa.

Interviewer: Have you ever taken dangerous risks to get a good photo?

Peter: Yes, probably that one of the lion I just mentioned, he was really near me, and also one of two rhinos fighting in a lake!

Interviewer: Which of your photos has had the greatest impact on you personally?

Peter: Definitely one of two twins walking hand in hand in an orphanage in Senegal, there were dozens of babies and very young children, and those two really impressed me.

Interviewer: Have you ever done any other jobs?

Peter: Yes, I’ve been a computer consultant. I studied Law but I have never worked as a lawyer.

Interviewer: What are your future plans now?

Peter: Going on honeymoon. I just got married the day before yesterday!
