Page 5I would like to thank everyone who attended the Aahmes Shriners’ Presentation. The program was shortened to about an hour and everyone seemed to enjoy the new format. We sincerely thank everyone who attended and assisted in the preparation. A special thank you goes to Emcee Illustrious Sir Terry Moody, Stage Director Mark Manlove, Personal Aid Howard Silsdorf, the Commandant’s staff, Aahmes/USS Hornet Band, Patrol Unit and Alchemists Clowns Unit for their dedication, support and hard work. Many others contributed including Priscilla Manlove, Vesta Moody, Pat Green, Susan Silsdorf and Becky Smith. As I write this article in late January, the elected Divan has already attended the Presentations at Asiya, Kerak and Ben Ali. Our first O/V was combined with the
Patrol and Motorcycle Units at Cattlemen’s and there was a great turn out. The O/V to the Sonoma County Shrine Club was also well attended and the meal was fantastic. By the time you read this article the Aahmes Crab Feed will have been held. This event is a great venue for the public to visit our facility and learn about Shriner activities. As always, it takes a great effort by many people to have a successful event. Again, thanks for all your efforts. Also planned for February is a combined O/V for the Alameda Shrine Club and Legion of Honor, Band and Past Masters Units. We’re trying something a little different this year by combining O/Vs to promote greater attendance and participation. At the end of the month the Alchemists Clowns Change of Gavel and O/V will be held February 27 which is always a blast and I’m sure this year will be no different. The first of March we have the Scenic Train Trip to Reno and this year we’ll be looking at snow! Later in the month we will visit the Modesto Shrine Club, Honored Ladies and Westside Shrine Club. In addition, the Dublin Parade, our first call out parade of the year will be March 12. Blue Lodge night is scheduled in late March followed by a Divan Breakfast at Aahmes on March 26. Please don’t forget our Stated Meeting on March 16th. For detailed information on these events, please check the Aahmes News.Membership development continues to be Aahmes Shriners’ major priority. Don Markert, Assistant Rabban, is spearheading our development program. Please give him all your support. The three “R’s” in membership are recruitment, retention and reinstatement. Our clubs and units are the major infrastructure of our Shrine and are the catalyst to retaining members. This year please support your clubs and units and, if you and not a member, please take a look around and join one or two. If you have some special interest that is not currently represented, then consider forming a club or unit yourself. It’s not that difficult. Please get involved. This year’s Potentate’s project is a continuation of the Temple Maintenance Fund which was established a number of years ago. The First Lady’s project will raise funds for a Pressure Garment Measurement and Fabrication Advancement System. Pressure garments are extremely important for scar management of burn patients. Pressure applied across burn areas, especially joints, for 12 to 18 months helps ensure more supple skin after healing. Pressure minimizes the risk of contracture development and supports improved functioning for those with burns. The system can be purchased in increments and funds raised will be applied for components of the system. Key benefits of the system are:• Pain reduction for patients by utilizing scan technology to measure limbs, torsos and other areas of
the body for exporting to a CADD software system• Interpretation of the CADD files to develop patterns for fabric cutting• More accurate creation of a three-dimensional model of faces and other body segments that have
burn injury• Faster, less intrusive and often more accurate measurement than traditional methods with less risk
of contamination• Cost savings in labor time• Reduction of modification of garments needed due to suboptimal measuring techniqueThe Divan, Peggy and I are looking forward to seeing you at some of the many events Aahmes Shriners have planned this year. Yours in the Faith, Kay

TWENTY FIVE YEARS AGO (1991)(from Aahmes News articles)
The Aahmes Potentate during year 1991 was Noble Joseph L. “Buzz” Pedroni, who was born in Oakland and educated in east bay schools. After graduation, he joined the Navy and spent 18 months on active duty at the end of World War II. After leaving the Navy, he joined his father in the security business as a locksmith. His reputation as a security specialist gave him the opportunity to travel to Germany and elsewhere in the world. A member of Lake Chabot Lodge (later changed to Tri-Square Lodge No. 551 in Hayward, and later to Crow Canyon Lodge in Castro Valley), Buzz joined Aahmes in 1967 and was a Past Grand Lama of the Dragons Unit. He Is now our oldest living Past Potentate (in terms of service to Aahmes) and living in Arizona.
Although the Livermore Shrine Center had just been completed, the 1991 Aahmes Presentation was held at the Richmond Auditorium on January 19th. The first big event of the year was the 66th Annual East West Shrine Game at Stanford on January 26th, with Aahmes reserving 150 rooms for two nights at the Palo Alto Holiday Inn. Many Shriners parked motor homes next to the stadium and partied during the weekend. Shrine Units and Clubs from Northern California marched into the stadium prior to the game and paraded around the stadium to much applause.
“Believe in 91” was the Potentate’s motto, and his logo was a bee wearing a fez and holding a crutch. This was an appropriate logo, as Aahmes members were as busy as bees during 1991. In addition to the usual events which we still do at the current time (Reno Fun Train, WSA trip, etc.,) Aahmes held a “Day at the Races at Golden Gate Fields, a ceremonial in Carson City, hosted a 2-day Aahmes Circus at the Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center in Oakland, actively participated in the Shrine Imperial Sessions in San Francisco (including a parade down Market Street on July 4th,) took a week-long trip to the Calgary Stampede, an 11-day cruise to New England and Canada, and a new Year’s cruise to Ensenada. A 15-day trip to an Aahmes ceremonial in Heidelberg and on to Italy was scheduled but cancelled due to the Persian Gulf War (yes, war in that area has been going on that long). During the year, Aahmes continued a Building Fund Campaign with a goal of $ 1,200,000.
A significant event during the year was the Aahmes Temple Cornerstone Laying Ceremony and Dedication on July 6, 1991. The Cornerstone Laying Ceremony was conducted by California Grand Master M.W. Ronald A. Sherod and his Grand Lodge Officers. Newly installed Imperial Potentate John W. Dean, III presided over the dedication portion of the ceremonies. The first stated meeting at the new Temple was held on July 10, 1991. Until then, stated meetings were held at the Broadway Masonic Temple in Oakland. The first Ceremonial held at the new temple was on December 8, 1991.

RECORDER’S NOTEBOOK
Here is something to think about: “Is Honesty OUTDATED?”Here are four forms of dishonesty:1. Lying - Saying something false to someone who is entitled to hear the truth2. Slander - Saying false statements that will injure a person’s reputation3. Fraud - Inducing someone to part with money or property on false pretenses.4. Stealing - Taking property from a person without permission
These notes were from an article that I read and thought it was interesting in today’s world.

NEWS FROM THE UNITS
ALCHEMISTS CLOWNS
Hello funny guys! Remember these letters are written months in advance so sometimes words may not make sense! We are getting a good start to the year. By now the O/V should be behind us. I am sure we had a good time. We are headed into parade season. The Dublin Parade is on March 12 and the Oakdale Parade is on April 9. We will hopefully have our vehicles in the parades. We need pullers! Remember the unit pays mileage! I would like to put a challenge out to you guys who have not put on your faces in awhile: Try it again and come visit us at the parades in 2016! The crowds always love seeing us and the more of us there are clowning around, the happier they are. And don’t forget, this year our wives are invited to every clown meeting and dinner beforehand. So far, this idea has been welcomed by good attendance! In closing, I want to remind everyone, we clown for the kids! Our job is to raise awareness for our hospitals by being visible!
Ted Melden, Chief Clown, 2016
PATROL
In January the Patrol had a great O/V with the Motorcycle Patrol at Cattlemen’s. Over a hundred were in attendance and fun and food was had by all.Welcome to Rudy Lejat, our newest Patrolmen! We are still looking for those who would like to have the honor of carrying the flags as we lead the units during the parades. We provide the uniforms; prior military service is not a requirement. The Patrol leads the way!Tom Slivinski, Captain

CONTRA COSTA SHRINE CLUBThe Contra Costa Shrine Club finished the year with a lunch in November at Uncle Yu’s in Lafayette and the election of officers in December. The new officers for the club are: President, Christos Moulis; Vice President, Nick Bloisa; Secretary, Vernor Larsen; and Treasurer, Ron Burch. The January meeting of the club was held for the installation of officers on Sunday January 24th at the Brass Door in San Ramon and the annual dues could be paid at that time. We have added a few Saturday meetings for those who wish to join us that otherwise are unable during the week. We have already started to plan for our O/V which will be June 12th at Crow Canyon Country Club, so please mark this date on your calendar. Our February 13th meeting will be at Zio Fraedo’s in Pleasant Hill. Hope you can attend. Email me at [email protected] for more information. Chris Moulis, President
MOTHER LODEGreetings from the Mother Lode! Our clown car made it all the way through the Sonora Christmas Lights Parade and won 1st prize in our category, thanks to the mechanical genius of our new President, Steve Hagel. Our next event was the annual Crab Feed on Feb. 6th at the Sonora Senior Center. Flyers had gone out announcing this event to make it a success for the Hospital Fund. We are grateful to our crab provider for finding us crab since it was in short supply. We are now starting to make plans for our Pote’s Visit at our Roundup weekend in May. A parade, BBQ’s and dinner will make it another great weekend with Oakdale Shrine Club joining us for the first time in putting on this event . Flyers will go out announcing this event and we expect the usual big crowd, so make plans to participate. Bob Snodgrass, Sec’y.

On January 9th many of our Redwood Shrine Club Nobles attended a 100th birthday party celebration for Noble Joe Hinch at Eureka Elks Lodge. How’s that for a kick off event for 2016. Congratulations to Joe and Lady Audrey. Our change of gavel ceremony was held on January 23rd along with a prime rib dinner and live jazz music for entertainment. January 30th had our Joker clown unit blowing up balloons at Eureka’s Crab Fest on the Bay. On February 7th, Redwood Shrine Club hosted a super bowl party for all Masonic members at Humboldt Masonic Lodge #79 in Eureka. It’s hoped that this event enhanced our new member recruiting efforts. March 12th we hold our annual St. Patricks Day dinner at Eureka’s Moose Lodge. Plenty of corn beef and cabbage plus entertainment. Then April brings all our units and Nobles together to participate in Eureka’s annual Rhody Parade. This event is always followed up with a BBQ hosted at the home of Noble Don “Ziggy” Ziegenfuss and Lady Ruth. The above is but a start to what the year holds for us here behind the Redwood curtain. Looking forward to serving with honor as the club’s president for 2016. Ken Spaulding, President
REDWOOD SHRINE CLUB
GOLF CLUB At the January Aahmes Golf Club Board of Directors meeting, it was decided to suspend the operation of the club. This is due to a lack of participation by the members for various reasons, namely physical restraints and age. The assets of the Club will be dispersed between the Potentate’s and First Lady’s projects. If anyone wishes to remain in good standing as far as NCGA is concerned, you may join an “associated” club or an “e-club”. Also, if anyone wishes to have a get-together to play golf they may call a group of friends and set up a time and place. Suspension of the club doesn’t mean we quit playing golf and meeting friends. There have been many Nobles and friends who have enjoyed the Club throughout many years and are sad to see it go. The following is an article written by Orren Rupert about his many memories of the Aahmes Golf Club.
The End of an Era... The board of directors has voted to close the Aahmes Golf Club. This ends a long tradition within Aahmes. As a longtime member, it is a sad day. God knows we tried to get new and young members and everyone who did join us for a round had a good time. Before I retired, I started to play in many of the tournaments and as I remember we had 40 or so players with shotgun starts. In those days many of the players would stay around and enjoy good fellowship at the 19th hole. The O/V was a major event held in December with at least a hundred members present. It was kind of an unwritten rule that to be a Potentate, you had to belong to the Golf Club. I remember playing Bethel Island in the fog and rain but we still had a good turnout. For our annual golf tournament Bill Haynes would have a new car available for a hole-in-one prize. It was a safe bet on his part as no one ever won, which was not because everyone didn’t try. There were so many great Shriners who were members, most of them gone now but I will always have great memories. One that comes to mind, while playing with VO Hughes he made a good shot on a par 3 hole. I said “Boy VO, you must have been taking some lessons” and without a beat he responded “take lessons hell, I give lessons.” Those were the good days when several players carried a flask and it was not filled with water. Bill Heath was another guy who rarely missed a tournament and played a great game well into his eighties. He even came out after he had a stroke with his daughter and hit them down the middle. They just don’t make people with such a love for the game anymore. I sure wish I could bottle up all the laughs we had in this club and from time to time open them to enjoy them over again. I’m sure some of the Past Potentates i.e. Sandy Kahn, Don Emig, “Doc” Greelman, Charles Langel, Gary Kenst and Rod Hamilton could tell many stories about the club. I served on many of the Club offices to keep it going and it was truly my pleasure. I would like to thank the recent Shriners who have helped to keep the Club going during the past several years i.e. Doug Hobson, Jim Sloneker, Bud Brickell and Wayne Green.Respectfully, Thank you Orren for some of your great memories,Orren Rupert, Treasurer Doug Hobson, Past President

Dear Nobles:One of our Nile members once said that I’m the one who nags and makes everyone feel guilty. Well, I think I shall talk about this great way that YOU can help US help you….. Have you heard about “Amazon Smile”? I’m sure you have, but here I go again. Valentine’s Day is coming soon, so when you think of a gift for that supercalifragilisticexpialidocious significant other in your life, go to: amazon.smile.com That will take you to a choice of non-profit organizations including Shriners Hospitals for Children ®. Click on that and continue shopping. When you finish, .05% of your order, no matter the size, will go to our Foundation. That’s all there is to it. You can help even more if you encourage your friends and family to do the same. Personally, I never cease to be amazed at what one can find on Amazon. Check ‘em out, guys! They’re mind boggling! Don’t want to make you feel guilty, honest! Just want you to know this is another way to help “our kids.”Next in line is a fund raiser for Nefru Ari. We realize it is very SHORT notice! We are doing a bus trip to Cache Creek Casino on Presidents’ Day, February 15: leaving Martinez 9 AM; stop at Richmond about 9:30. $50 per person with $10 bonus play and $5 food credit. Members and friends are welcome. We would love to have you help us fill the bus!!! For reservations and more information, please contact PQ Kitty Cryderman at (925) 726-8032. Join us for fun, fellowship and games on the bus. It’s a great way for you to get to know us and vice versa. Think about it!Now for one or two happenings around the system: The Houston University Cougars baseball team visited our Galveston hospital recently in conjunction with the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic to be held at Minute Maid Park February 26-28.PGA golfer Tony Finau visited patients at our Honolulu hospital on January 12. Not only did he spread cheer to our patients, he donated $2,000 to help our keiki! Mahalo Tony! We’ll be cheering for Tony in the Sony Open in Hawaii! Since I’m not a golfer, I’m not sure when the Sony Open was, and I have no idea how he did, but I do know we appreciate his donation and his time. One more: The Twin Cities hosted the sixth annual International Fire, Police & Military Winter Games in Lewiston, Maine. “The Maine Event, Battle on Ice,” is a charity hockey game to benefit the Shriners Hospitals for Children ® in Boston. By the time you read this we will already have been honored by a visit from our Supreme Queen Sharon St. John from New Mexico. In the next issue, I will “regale” you with all that we presented to her when she was here on January 31.
SAVE THE DATE: Installation of the Nefru Ari 2016 officers will be held March 13 in Richmond.I know there’s more, but I think the cold weather totally froze my brain, so………… look for me next time. I’ll find something to talk about. Guaranteed. J Meanwhile………….
