2017 MIRAMONTE VARSITY FOOTBALL SCHEDULE

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSAs a costly sports program that receives limited district funding, Miramonte Football would not exist without the tireless organizing and fundraising efforts of parent volunteers, to whom we extend our deepest appreciation. We also would like to recognize our major program advertisers for their support, and extend a special thanks to Clark Thompson-Village Associates Realtor, Orinda Shell, UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital and Mechanics Bank of their generous donations to the football program.

Beginning my seventh year as Head Football Coach at Miramonte High School, I want to thank the Orinda community and all of the great people for their tremendous support needed to keep our program growing and make high school athletics a special time for the student-athletes involved. I’m well aware of the tradition and high standards that have been set by those before me.

In my twelve years as both an assistant coach and Head Coach at Miramonte we have won two NCS Championships and have ten NCS playoff appearances. The entire coaching staff and every player is looking forward to the 2017 season and seeking the 2017 NCS Div III Championship.

Thanks for your support,

Jack Schram

VarsITY Update

Miramonte 25 vanden 7 Friday, Aug. 25th, 2017 oriNdA, cA

The Miramonte Matadors Varsity Football team started off their 2017 season strong and with an impressive start, with #24 Henry Vacakis receiving the game kickoff and running the ball 30 yards to the Vanden Vikings 45 yard line. After 2 first downs the MATS offense scored their first touchdown of the season with #2 quarterback Xavier Clark handing it off to #28 running back Peter Stehr who scored 6 points. The MATS defense including #74 Mark Mezody and #22 Travis Armistead stopping Vikings #4 Maurice Brown in several plays keeping the Vikings from scoring and ending the first quarter with the MATS up 6-0.

In the second quarter, the MATS did an excellent job holding the Vikings, with #20 Keilan Stone stopping the Vikings running back #4. Unfortunately at 9:57, the Vikings scored (6) and got the extra point (1). After an unfortunate kickoff fumble, the Vikings regained the ball on the Matadors 12 yard line. MATS defense stopped the Vikings from scoring and even pushed them back to the 14. Then MATS #22 Travis Armistead recovered a Viking fumble. At 5:58, MATS #13 quarterback AJ Frazier handed off to #11 Will Cassriel, who then threw a long pass to #20 wide receiver Keilan Stone, giving the MATs an exciting 71 yard touchdown! The MATS defense held the Vikings with MATS #18 Jack Hansen stopping another Vikings 1st down and ending the first half with the Matadors up 12-7.

The third quarter, MATS defense stopped the Vikings shortly after the kickoff. MATS #10 Sam Walker and #74 Mark Mezody tackled the Vikings QB for a 4 yard loss, forcing the Vikings to kick from their own 30 yard line. After a series of impressive plays by the MATS offense and Vikings defense penalties, the MATS moved the ball to the Vikings 15 yard line. MATS #2 QB Xavier Clark handed the ball off to #28 Peter Stehr, who ran in another touchdown for the MATS. The entire MATS defense held tough and strong, rushing the Vikings offense to again keep them from scoring with #74 Mezody tackling for a 3 yard loss and # 50 Zach Barker with #10 Sam Walker tackling for a 5 yard Viking loss, ending the quarter for the MATS 18-7.

The fourth quarter was a battle back and forth with neither team letting up or scoring the first 11 minutes of the final 12 minute period. The MATS entire offense worked and fought hard to get the ball into the Vikings end zone, and with only 54 seconds left in the game, #2 quarterback Xavier Clark ran in the MATS 4th touchdown of the season and #4 Henry Marken kicked a field goal, making the extra point and ending Miramonte Varsity Football Team’s 2017 season home opening game with a win of 25 -7.

A special mention to the Matadors offensive and the offense front line - #53 Quinn Rochette, #57 Nick Miller, # 58 Robin Vanderlann, #59 Kai Rochette, and #70 Sean Lucas Eckert, for an outstanding job.

4x4 Scrimmages Friday, Aug. 18th, 2017 oriNdA, cA

The Mats Varsity team looked very strong against the three teams they played in the scrimmages. After shaking off some early defensive errors, the defense got into their rhythm against Piedmont and did not allow any scores for over 15 minutes of game time. The defense played aggressively and tackled well from the D-line to the secondary. The Mats’ offensive line looked as good as ever and opened up a plethora of gaps for the running backs. The ground game was successful for the Mats and there were many highlight runs from the MATS players. Miramonte’s pass attack wasn’t the focal point of the offense but they were still able to dominate each of their opponents.

The Miramonte Competitive Cheer team are two time National Champions 2016, 2017 in the Small Varsity Show Cheer Division. They competed against 21 teams in their quest for the title.

Prior to the National Competition, Cheer Teams across the country had to qualify at Regional levels and receive an invitation to compete. The USA National Cheerleading competition was held in Anaheim, CA from 3/23 through 3/26. The game got off to a great start with a strong kick off return 30 yards.

After a few punt exchanges and solid defense led by Straub, Foutch and Garman, the MATS sustained a solid drive ending in a Mollahan 28 yard QB sweep.

A fumbled point after attempt resulted in a 2 point conversion by Duran.

Special-teams contributed heavily with Reeves’ 80 yrd punt return.

The Mats led 14-13 at the half.

The third-quarter was a defensive battle with no points scored. The MATS had a couple of opportunities with 2 passes barely out of reach of open receivers.

The MATS lost the battle of field position with a late interception resulting in a touchdown drive.

A well played and strong physical game, but the Frosh Mats came up short 14-19.

Frosh Update

4x4 Scrimmages Friday, Aug. 18th, 2017 oriNdA, cA

The FROSH football team showed up to their first full contact scrimmage with a mixture of excitement and butterflies. After brushing off the first game nerves, the team found some success in the run game against College Park. While there were some issues with ball security, the Frosh team put up a strong fight against bigger teams that played with seasoned Sophomore. Needless to say, their season looks very promising.
