A Board Recognition Ceremony of the Board of Trustees of Texas City Independent School District was held Monday, May 20, 2019, beginning at 6:00 PM in the Blocker Middle School Auditorium.

Mr. Hal Biery, President, called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. Mr. Biery announced that a quorum was present, that the meeting had been duly called, and notice of the meeting had been posted in the time and manner required by law.

Samuel Zavala lead the pledge to the U.S. Flag tonight. He is a 4th grade student at Guajardo Elementary.

Jude Chavira lead the pledge to the Texas Flag He is a 2ndgrader at La Marque Primary School.

Levi Fry Outstanding Student

Levi Fry 5th grader Hayden Milner was selected by her school as an Outstanding student.She is a member of the Levi Fry Student Council, National Elementary Honor Society and Genius Hour. She’s made straight A’s all year and is an all-star softball pitcher. Hayden touched hearts earlier this semester when she reached out lovingly to Mrs. Young, the mother of Xavion Young a La Marque Primary student who lost his life this year. She organized a sign and rallied classmates to sign it to present to the grieving mother.

Houston Rockets Read Nation Award

La Marque Elementary was selected to partner with the Houston Rockets all year in in the BeFit and Read Nation programs. Makayla Morales, 5th grader, was named the school’s top reader for the Houston Rockets Read Nation Contest.

Competing in District and State, La Marque High School senior Kaylan Bradford placed 1st in the nail artistry category. She also tested her technical knowledge on job employability forState, where she placed 2nd. Her teacher is Jamillah Vallare.

Outstanding Ready Set Teach Leadership

TCHS Senior Xitlali Ugarte was the event coordinator for the Days of Play held during the2018-19 school year. Lali took the leadership role in organizing the events and activities foreach of the Day of Plays sponsored by the Ready, Set, Teach students. Each day of playcoincided with a teacher work day. The purpose was to help teachers with young children and offer a safe and fun place to go while teachers needed to work or attend training. Christina Hartsfield is responsible for the Read Set Teach program.

Guajardo Jelly Bean Run Winners

Guajardo elementary held its annual Jelly Bean run for kindergarten before Easter.The fastest boy and girl in all the kindergarten classes was Camden Simpson and Angelina Torres. Their coaches are Melissa Morris, and Toya Peterson are the coaches.

Texas City Cultural Arts Contest Winners

The City of Texas City annually hosts a Cultural Arts Contest for students. A set of Kohfeldtsiblings did well in the Kindergarten-2nd Grade category. Congratulations to AnastasiaCamacho for placing 1st and Alex Camacho for placing 3rd and receiving an HonorableMention.

LMMS UIL Academic Awards

The La Marque Middle School UIL Team won 20 awards at their competition at Friendswood Junior High School, which included 18 medals and 2 trophies. TCHS Business Students Stock Challenge

Three Texas City High Schools students participated in the Prairie View A&M High SchoolStock Challenge. The TCHS Team was accepted to compete in the online PVAMU web-based stock trade program. They started with $500,000 virtual dollars to trade. They were judged on their portfolio returns and had to make at least 5 trades. The team placed 17th out of 57. Their teacher is Hope Smalley Jackson.

TCHS Health Science State Qualifiers

Texas City High School students qualified for State in their health science contest based ontheir area competition. Theirteachers are Jackie Thompson, Michael Aguilar, and Abigail Davalos.

Blocker Middle School student actors competed in the UIL One Act Play Contest where theyperformed HOME ON THE MORNING TRAIN by Kim Hines. They won five individual awards for their show. Giselle Alcala and Yesenia Villatoro-Rivera were each selected for All-Star Cast Awards; Trent Hooks and Krimson Savener each received Honorable Mention Awards, and Aiden Rust won All-Star Tech Award. Their theatre teacher is Sagina Varghese.

TCHS Powerlifting Honors

Nine Stings powerlifters qualified for the Regional Powerlifting Meet. The team tied for 4thplace at Region. James Shepherd is the head coach.

La Marque High School had another successful powerlifting season with 7 lifters qualifying for and competing at the Region IV Division 2 Powerlifting Meet. Malik Holmes won 1st Place and competed at State as the Regional Champion in the 220 weight class. Russell Pickney placed 3rd in the 165 weight class; Christian Middleton also had a 3rd place finish in the 198 weight class, and Kobe Gatson had a 4th place finish in the 114 weight class. Overall, the Cougars finished 4th place as a team. Their head coach is Amber Rozier.

relay, 4x200 relay, 200 m dash and 400 m dash. Jackeria Woodkins was District Champion and Area Champion in both the 200 and 400 m. She is the Area Champion in the 400 m and AreaChampion runner up in the 200 m. Then at State, she claimed the State Champion title in the400 m. The head track coach is Amber Rozier.

Blocker Duke TIP Program

The Duke University Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP) helps gifted students assessthe extent of their academic abilities with above-grade-level testing recognizes them for their achievements and provides them with a variety of enrichment benefits as well as accelerated face-to-face and online educational programs. TCHS Basketball Honors

Texas City Boys Basketball finished the season with a 31-7 overall record. They were District Champions with a record of 13-1 and made it to the Regional Quarter Finals in the UIL playoffs. Ty Clark & Rosendo Dominguez captured the State Championship for BlockerMiddle School in the Robotics Urban Search & Rescue division qualifying them to representTexas at SkillsUSA Nationals in June. Blocker won the National Championship in 2018.The students are challenged in this contest to create a mobile robot to be used by emergency personnel. They are judged on how well their robot locates, grabs and moves simulated ordnances around the challenge course during timed rounds. Their teachers are Stacey Richardson and James Jobe.

Roosevelt-Wilson Elementary VEX State & Worlds Awards

There were 10,000 teams across the world that competed in the VEX IQ Challenge andRoosevelt-Wilson’s Samurai Scientists claimed one of the top awards…the Innovate Award.The team was judged on their engineering notebook and on judge’s interviews to make surethe students understood the concept of engineering their robot. Only five awards in this division were awarded to Texas teams, and Texas City was one of them and the only one in the greater Houston and Gulf Coast area. Roosevelt-Wilson was eligible to compete for this at Worlds because they won the same award at the State level. In their first year of competition, Team 30116R Samurai Scientists won the following awards: The Excellence Award (State Qualifier and the highest award given in the VEX IQ Challenge) in Pasadena, Build Award in Galveston, Design Award (Worlds Qualifier) at State, STEM Research Project Award (Worlds Qualifier) at State. Team 30116W Warpaints also had a successful inaugural year. They won the Design Award (State Qualifier and the 2nd highest award given in the VEX IQ Challenge) in Pasadena and the Think Award in Galveston. Their sponsor is Ricci Rodgers.

TCHS has been participating in VEX Robotics competition for the past four years. Each yearthey have qualified to compete in the World Championships in Louisville, Kentucky based ontheir winning seasons, and each year they continue to qualify more robots for the competition. This year, they took 5 robots, which meant TCHS was tied with 5 other schools for having the most robots in this international competition that featured more than 584 robots in the high school division. Robot 590B won the prestigious Design Award and was a Division Semifinalist. Texas City High School was the only Texas team to win this award.Congratulations to senior Keilan Levesque for the award and Holly Walker as the drive coach. Their teacher is James Jobe. Blocker Middle School UIL Choir Success

The Blocker Boys Choir won a Sweepstakes Trophy for their outstanding performance at their UIL Concert and Sight Reading Competition. The choir received a Superior rating, the highest rating possible, in both their stage performance and sight reading evaluation. The Blocker Bella Voce Girls’ Choir received a Superior rating in their concert performance at UIL. In addition, Kent Anderson was chosen as a member of the Texas Choral Directors’ Association Honor Choir. He was won of 200 selected from 900 entries state-wide.
