On December 7,2001, The Boys' Club held a groundbreaking ceremony at the project site.

According to MBI's President, Edward S. Campanella, "MBI has taken partic- ular interest in the Clubhouse Project as The Boys' Club organization has built a strong history of providing vital services for New York's neighborhood youth-critical for New York's suc- cess. maintaining community relations and special arrangements were made to accommodate and protect an adjoin- ing 3-story condominium, due to the close proximity of the construction of the clubhouse's pool to this property. A 70-foot-long grout retaining wall was constructed, in lieu of underpin- ning, to shore up and stabilize the adjoining structure. The construction of the pool involves excavations approximately 10 feet below the foot- ings of the adjoining structure. The

grout wall begins 5 feet below-grade and extends 15 feet below the new building's proposed footing elevation.

The fast-track project is scheduled to be completed within one year, allow- ing the facility to resume operations as early as possible. The project will include underpinning and sheeting, detailed stepped foundation and cellar slab, a composite ground floor slab with numerous depressions and details, structural steel for 4 floor lev- els and arch slab detail above the pool area.

Special finishes will include a granite, limestone and brick facade, a glass mosaic mural, construction of the 66,000 gallon pool and extensive tile work for facility's natatorium, locker rooms, showers and bathrooms. Additional items include construction

of a 15-stall parking lot, curb cuts, side- walks, retaining walls, fencing and landscaping.

The project team includes project architect, George Cooper Rudolph III Architects; civil engineer, Edwards & Kelcey; project engineer, Gilsanz, Murray, Stdeck, LLP; mechanical engineer, AKF Engineers, LLP.

In December, MBI Group was commissioned as general contractor for the construction of Bank of America's 25,000. SF temporary trad- ing facilities at 100 West 33rd Street.

MBI's work included the construction of an IT room with supplemental air conditioning and trader stations on raised flooring which allow for exten- sive power, security, data and voice cabling. Exposed ductwork and indi- rect lighting were special features of the design along with a "popcorn" fin- ish on the exposed slab which required considerable repair. The project architects include principals from Tuller McNealus Feld and

According to Darren Schumer, Senior Project Manager at Jones Lang LaSalle, "MBI truly did go above and beyond the call of duty in this 'Miracle on 33rd Street.' In just 4 weeks the 25,000 SF space was trans- formed into a sophisticated open envi- ronment where 125 employees are glad to be."
