MNUFC hosts Costa Rica champion Saprissa in friendlyMinnesota United welcomes Costa Rican champion Deportivo Saprissa to TCF Bank Stadium for an international friendly on Wednesday, July 11. Los Morados arrive fresh off winning their record-breaking 34th league title on penalties vs. Club Sport Herediano. It will be a familiar opponent for Loons’ captain Francisco Calvo, who played for Saprissa before joining MNUFC. Minnesota will get a chance to test itself against CONCACAF Champions League-level talent before a three-match homestand where it hopes to climb back to playoff position. The match will allow Head Coach Adrian Heath to experiment with the squad and tactics as he prepares for the final half of the 2018 MLS season.

Set pieces doom MNUFC in 3-0 loss at HoustonAfter a confidence-building win at home against Toronto FC, Minnesota United was frustrated offensively and done in by a pair of set pieces as its road woes continued with a dispiriting 3-0 defeat to Houston Dynamo on Saturday, July 7. With the Loons unable to mount a threatening attack, a brace from Dynamo defender Phillippe Senderos — both of which came from corner kicks — was enough to see the visitors off on a sweltering night at BBVA Compass Stadium. “I don’t think we were sharp enough all evening,” said Head Coach Adrian Heath after the match. “Overall, it is just another indication that we have issues on the road. I am disappointed with the level of commitment considering where we were on Wednesday.”

2015 MINNESOTA UNITED FC GOAL MAPMINNESOTA UNITED NEWS AND NOTES

MNUFC signs young Ecuador international attacker Romario IbarraMinnesota United announced on Monday that it reached an agreement with Club Deportivo Universidad Católica of Ecuador’s Serie A for the transfer of Romario Ibarra using Targeted Allocation Money. The Ecuador international midfielder will join the club pending receipt of his P1 Visa and ITC and will occupy an international spot on Minnesota’s roster. “We have been looking for some change-of-game pace for the team and that’s one of the best things Romario does: He changes games with his pace and he challenges defenders,” said MNUFC Head Coach Adrian Heath of the Loons’ newest addition. “He’s of a great age at 23 and he has had a good start to his career. He has just broken into the Ecuador national team, which is one of the premier national teams in South America. It’s a big step for us, a real investment on behalf of the club and I am delighted. Can’t wait to get him here, can’t wait to work with him.” Ibarra, 23, began his youth career at Club Valle del Chota in his native Ecuador in 2006 before moving to Espoli and then Universidad Católica, where he made his professional debut in 2011. He spent time with Liga de Quito in 2013, but returned to Universidad Católica in 2014. Since then, he has scored 16 goals in 131 matches with the club. “I know how difficult these types of players are for us to cope with,” added Heath. “It will make a change now that we have one of these players on our roster that we feel, with his skill and pace on the counterattack, can be a difference maker.” At the international level, Ibarra received his first call-up to the Ecuador national team in October 2017 for the final round of CONMEBOL qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. Ibarra struck the equalizer in the 83rd minute of his first match against Chile, an eventual 2-1 defeat for Ecuador, and scored 38 seconds into the second match against Argentina (a 3-1 loss). His older brother Renato Ibarra, also an Ecuador international, currently plays for Club América in Liga MX.

Darwin Quintero earns spot in MLS Team of the Week for Week 19Forward Darwin Quintero earned a spot in the Week 19 edition of the MLS Team of the Week for his world-class performance in the 4-3 victory over Toronto FC on Wednesday, July 4. Quintero netted the first hat trick for an MNUFC player in MLS in the result over the reigning MLS Cup champion (8’, 52’ and 57’). He now leads the Loons with six goals and two assists in 12 matches played.

This is the second time Quintero has made the Team of the Week, first making the squad back in Week 7 for his performance in the 3-2 defeat against Portland Timbers.

Quintero on where the hat-trick performance ranks in his career“This is the fourth I’ve scored, but I can say with certainty that it is the best one I’ve scored. I hope there are a lot more goals to come.”

Saprissa arrives fresh off winning record-breaking league titleSaprissa arrives fresh off winning its record-breaking 34th league title on penalties vs. Club Sport Herediano. Additionally, MNUFC captain and defender Francisco Calvo played for  Los Morados before signing with the Loons in December 2016. In 28 matches during the 2016 season, he tallied nine goals (six in league play) and one assist and was a consistent starter en route to a spot in the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals.

Prior to that, Calvo scored twice in the first leg of the Torneo de Invierno 2015 final to lead Saprissa to its 32nd league crown.

Calvo named to 2018 MLS All-Star squad by “Tata” MartinoMLS announced at the end of June that Calvo was named to the MLS All-Star squad to face Juventus in the 2018 MLS All-Star Game presented by Target. He is one of the 14 players selected by All-Star Head Coach, Gerardo “Tata” Martino. The match will take place at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on August 1 at 6:30 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on UniMás,FS1, TSN and TVA Sports.

“We are really pleased for him and it shows the level of respect he has inthe league,” said Head Coach Adrian Heath. “I know from talking to othercoaches in the league and around the world that he has a lot of admirers. We like the way that he plays, he is a really comfortable center back, reallycomfortable on the ball and great in the air in both boxes. It’s nice for theclub to have a player on that stage; when you are selecting him for thisgame, it’s nice when they recognize him as one of the best players in theleague.”

Calvo has played 40 matches for Minnesota United — 38 as captain —scoring twice and adding one assist since joining the team in December2016. His nomination to the MLS All-Star squad arrives following hisparticipation in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia with the Costa Ricanational team, where he started and played a full 90 minutes in a tough1-0 defeat to Serbia and appeared off the bench in a 2-0 loss to Brazil for atotal of 106 minutes played. Los Ticos drew their final group-stage match2-2 against Switzerland to end their World Cup run.

The 2018 MLS All-Stars will face off against Juventus, the Italian giantswho won their seventh consecutive Serie A title earlier this year. Juventusis the most decorated club in Italy, winning more Serie A and CoppaItalia titles than any other Italian club. Juventus also reached the UEFAChampions League final in two of the past four years (2015, 2017) and recently signed Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo. The team is managed by Massimiliano Allegri, who just completed his fourth season with the club.

Minnesota United FC plays in North America’s top professional soccer league, Major League Soccer (MLS). The league features 23 teams from across the United States and Canada.

After a successful bid to host the FIFA World Cup in 1994, the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) founded MLS to bring a top-level soccer league back to the country for the first time since 1984, when the original NASL folded. The league was set to begin play in 1996 with 10 teams: Colorado Rapids, Columbus Crew (SC), D.C. United, Dallas Burn (FC Dallas), Kansas City Wiz (Sporting Kansas City), Los Angeles Galaxy, New England Revolution, NY/NJ MetroStars (New York Red Bulls), San Jose Clash (Earthquakes) and Tampa Bay Mutiny.

The league’s first match was played on April 6, 1996 as the San Jose Clash played D.C. United in front of 31,000 fans at Spartan Stadium. The league drew large crowds in its opening season, pulling star power from around North America and building on the excitement of the 1994 FIFA World Cup.

As MLS has continued to grow, clubs have begun moving out of shared American football venues and into soccer-specific stadium, led by Columbus Crew (SC), who moved into the soccer-specific MAPFRE Stadium in 1999. Currently, 16 teams play in soccer-specific venues.

The league is split into the Eastern and Western Conferences. Each team plays 34 matches during the season. Teams play all conference opponents twice, once at home and once on the road, and each team in the other conference once, with an even balance of home and away matches. The remainder of the schedule is filled with matches against conference opponents. The top six teams in each conference at the end of the year qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs.

The postseason begins with the third through sixth seeds in each conference playing in a knockout round. The winners advance to the conference semifinals to play the first and second seeds in the conference. In this round, the format switches to a two-match aggregate series, with the team scoring the most goals over the series moving on. The same format is used for the conference finals. The winner of the conference final moves on to face the other conference champion in the MLS Cup Final. The final is a single match, hosted by the team with the best record in the regular season, with the winner being declared MLS Cup Champion.
