Loons and Sporting KC to Meet in Open CupMinnesota United kicks off its U.S. Open Cup campaign on Wednesday night against Sporting Kansas City. It has been a quick turnaround for both sides, who faced off at Children’s Mercy Park just over a week ago. Minnesota is missing a few more members of the squad due to international duty this time around, giving some depth players a chance to prove themselves. Adrian Heath’s men will look to capitalize on Sporting KC’s recent stumble over the weekend, drawing 1-1 at home against struggling Montreal Impact. The match is the first of four matches in 11 days for the Loons, and a win here would do well to carry momentum into the upcoming road match before returning to TCF Bank Stadium next week.

Sporting KC Gets Revenge on MinnesotaA depleted Minnesota United side traveled south to take on Sporting KC a week and a half ago. With suspensions, injuries and international call-ups, the Loons’ depth was put to the test. Minnesota managed to hold off its host in the sweltering heat for almost the entire first half. A stoppage time goal for Sporting KC opened the flood gates heading into the second half. A few injuries limited Head Coach Adrian Heath’s ability to change the match with subs, allowing the offensive power of Sporting KC to lay siege to the Minnesota goal. A pair of goals in the second half secured the result for the home side. With the win, Sporting KC extended its home unbeaten streak to 16 matches.

• This is the third of four meetings between the clubs this season. They last met on June 3 and will not play again until October 7.

• Both of the previous matches between these clubs have ended with the road team being shut out.

• The two clubs have met twice in the Open Cup. In 2014, the Loons traveled to Sporting KC and were defeated 2-0 after going down to 10 men. Sporting KC came up to Minnesota in 2016 and won 2-1 in extra time.

• The furthest run in the Open Cup by a Minnesota club was by the 2005 Minnesota Thunder, who reached the semifinals.

• No Minnesota team has ever won the Open Cup.

• Sporting KC has won three Open Cup titles. It has both of the Open Cup titles to be won by a team from Kansas (2012, 2015), as well as one of 12 won by Missouri teams (2004 as Kansas City Wizards). It was the only Missouri team not from St. Louis to win the Open Cup.

• Former Minnesota Thunder player Johnny Menyongar scored 13 goals in his Open Cup career, tying him for second in the modern era.

• Minnesota teams are 1-1-2 (W-L-OTL) against Sporting Kansas City in the Open Cup. Minnesota’s victory came in the first meeting between the Thunder and the then–Wizards in 2005. Three straight goals propelled Minnesota to a 3-1 result en route to a semifinal appearance. Sporting KC’s only regulation win came in 2014, a 2-0 result over 10-man Minnesota United.

• This match kicks off a stretch of four matches in 11 days for the Loons. The first two matches take them from Kansas City to Real Salt Lake. They return home the following week for back-to-back home matches against Cascadia clubs Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

• The winner of this match advances to the Open Cup Round of 16, which will take place on June 28.

• MNUFC leading goalscorer Christian Ramirez has three career goals in the U.S. Open Cup. Two for Minnesota and one for PSA Elite (USASA).

• Bobby Shuttleworth has two wins in two Open Cup appearances.

• Minnesota players Johan Venegas, Francisco Calvo, Kevin Molino and Jermaine Taylor are absent from today’s match due to national duty for World Cup Qualifiers and international friendlies.

• No player on either team has scored multiple goals in the series between the teams this season.

• This is the second of five consecutive matches against Western Conference opponents for Minnesota.

• This is one of three all-MLS matchups in this round of the Cup.

Minnesota United FC plays in North America’s top professional soccer league, Major League Soccer (MLS). The league features 22 teams from across the United States and Canada.

After a successful bid to host the World Cup in 1994, the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) founded MLS to bring a top level soccer league back to the country for the first time since 1984, when the original NASL folded. The league was set to begin play in 1996 with ten teams: Colorado Rapids, Columbus Crew SC, D.C. United, Dallas Burn (FC Dallas), Kansas City Wiz (Sporting Kansas City), Los Angeles Galaxy, New England Revolution, NY/NJ MetroStars (New York Red Bulls), San Jose Clash (Earthquakes) and Tampa Bay Mutiny.

The league’s first match was played on April 6, 1996 as the San Jose Clash played D.C. United if front of 31,000 fans at Spartan Stadium. The league drew large crowds in its opening season, pulling star power from around North America and building on the excitement of the 1994 FIFA World Cup.

As MLS has continued to grow, clubs have begun moving out of shared American football venues and into soccer-specific stadium, led by the Columbus Crew who moved into the soccer-specific MAPFRE Stadium in 1999. Currently, 14 teams play in soccer-specific venues.

The league is split into the Eastern and Western Conferences. Each team plays 34 matches during the season. Teams play all conference opponents twice, once at home and once on the road, and each team in the other conference once, with an even balance of home and away matches. The remainder of the schedule is filled with matches against conference opponents. The top six teams in each conference at the end of the year qualifying for the MLS Cup Playoffs.

The postseason begins with the third through sixth seeds in each conference playing in a knockout round. The winners advance to the conference semifinals to play the first and second seeds in the conference. In this round, the format switches to a two-match aggregate series, with the team scoring the most goals over the series moving on. The same format is used for the conference finals. The winner of the conference final moves on to face the other conference champion in the MLS Cup Final. The final is a single match, hosted by the team with the best record in the regular season, with the winner being declared MLS Cup Champion.
