Minor League Clips Friday's top prospect performers Will Boor | MLB.com | June 2, 2018 • No. 100 overall prospect Alex Kirilloff (Twins' No. 6) hit his ninth homer of the season for Class A Cedar Rapids. The 20-year-old, a first-round Draft pick from 2016, hit a solo shot in the sixth and added a single and a double to finish his night 3-for-5. Twins prospect Royce Lewis reclaims his joy in the minor leagues Mike Berardino | Pioneer Press | June 2, 2018 CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — The sun is setting on Perfect Game Field. The ever-present gnats seem to be multiplying in the still-stifling heat, and the 10-minute period allotted each Sunday for postgame interaction between the Class A Cedar Rapids Kernels and their adoring fans has long since expired. Most players have excused themselves and returned to the air-conditioned home clubhouse to celebrate a much-needed walk-off victory over Denny Hocking’s Clinton LumberKings. Royce Lewis, however, is in no hurry to leave, even after playing all 32 innings over the past 27 hours in back-to-back doubleheaders. It was his sacrifice fly in extra innings that sent the Kernels to a 3-2 victory in the just-completed game. “Thanks for coming out!” the 18-year-old shortstop says cheerfully as he stands in full uniform on the grass in short right field. “Happy birthday, man!” he tells a young fan after being informed of the momentous occasion by the boy’s mother. “Nice meeting you!” he says to a middle-aged couple after carefully signing their baseball and a color photo. Photo ops with small children require Lewis to lower himself into a deep squat, which he does over and over without complaint. The easy, electric smile is present each time as he stays in character, not unlike one of those Disneyland performers from back home in Orange County, Calif. Like the gnats Lewis keeps shooing away with a wave of his hand, the autograph seekers seem to be multiplying. Official attendance was announced at 1,461, and it’s fair to wonder if every single one of those people will get to meet Lewis and shake his hand in the fading light of an early summer night in Upper Iowa. The top overall pick in the June 2017 draft has no handler at this moment, no buffer between him and those eagerly awaiting the day when he ascends to his rightful place as the Twins’ starting shortstop in the major leagues. Lewis, a birthday of his own coming up on June 5, seems perfectly comfortable in this setting. Next up is a tall man in a matching Vanderbilt baseball T-shirt and cap. He offers Lewis a fresh baseball and a suggestion. “Whatever you feel like inscribing is fine,” the man says. “Maybe something like, ‘See you in the big leagues’ or ‘Number one pick.’ ” Lewis glances at the ball and pauses for a moment before repeating his careful signature in bright blue sharpie and adding an inscription. Moments later, 46-year-old Brian Hronski steps off to the side and proudly examines what Lewis wrote: “Thank you for being a fan of the Twins.” With that, making the eight-hour roundtrip drive down from Columbia Heights was all worth it. “To me, it’s bigger than him,” says Hronski, a former Division II ballplayer. “It’s about making the guys around him better and just being part of a winning team. You can tell from his personality that he really cares about these guys. If he goes 0 for 4 and they win, I think he’s happy about that.” THE TALK That’s the mythology of Royce Lewis, one that has rapidly developed from the moment the Twins gave him a $6.75 million signing bonus and a chance to become a future face of their franchise. Yet, behind the smile and the Jeteresque swagger is a respectful young man who desperately wants to justify his employer’s investment.

When the oh-fers and the losses started to pile up for Lewis over the previous three weeks — maybe for the first time in his baseball career — Kernels manager Toby Gardenhire noticed a change. A former Twins minor leaguer himself, the son of Detroit Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire had brought Lewis into his office two days earlier for a heartfelt chat. “He’s got a lot going on — just a lot,” Gardenhire says. “I could tell he was starting to get a little worn down with everything. I just talked to him and basically told him, ‘Just go out there and have fun. Don’t forget who you are: the Royce Lewis who has fun at the ballpark and enjoys himself and lights up the clubhouse and has fun with his teammates and all that stuff.’ Sometimes it’s good to get a little reminder.” In a span of 52 at-bats, Lewis hit just .173 with a strikeout rate pushing 29 percent. He had homered just once all season, back on April 12 at Peoria, and his error total had climbed to seven. Sure, he had yet to take a single at-bat against a younger pitcher, but the frustration had started to mount. “He plays hard all the time; he always comes to the ballpark and he’s grinding through it,” Gardenhire says. “He’s an energetic guy. That’s what I wanted to remind him of. That’s who he is. That’s the Royce Lewis that everybody’s come to love.” Maybe it was time for Lewis to get a little Stuart Smalley-style affirmation from his first-year skipper, the former University of Wisconsin-Stout head coach who was one of Lewis’ coaches in the Gulf Coast League last summer. “Just like anybody else, he puts a little pressure on himself about stuff,” Gardenhire says. “I just told him, ‘Don’t put pressure on yourself. There’s no pressure. Just have fun. Just enjoy yourself. Be you. The you that you are is good enough.’ ” THE PLAY The first sign that the message has taken hold comes late on a Saturday afternoon. As the Kernels prepare to take the field in high-90s heat behind ace right-hander Brusdar Graterol and his 101-mph fastball, Lewis carefully makes his way through the home dugout. Walking up to each of his teammates, he goes through what he calls his “ritual.” A hug here, a high-five there, then an elaborate production of hand slaps and finger points with others. For good measure, Lewis walks down to the camera well at the end of the dugout and fist bumps a couple of media members, just to make sure they’re ready to go as well. “I do it every game,” Lewis says. “I think it just puts us in a mindset of, ‘Hey, it’s a game. Let’s have some fun.’ It’s not like, ‘Oh, I’ve got to get three hits today, otherwise my average will be down.’ When you’re not looking at the average and just having fun, the game comes easier and the average will go up.” He goes 0 for 2 as the designated hitter and narrowly gets thrown out on a sacrifice bunt as the Kernels lose the first of four games they will play this weekend, but his energy never flags. That evening, he pulls a two-strike curveball past third for a two-run double and later makes a highlight-level catch of a foul pop near the bullpen mound along the left-field line. The sheer burst of speed Lewis shows in running down that ball is breathtaking. He punctuates the play by thrusting his glove into the air in a triumphant gesture, only a hard right turn at full sprint keeping him from crashing into the tarpaulin along the knee wall. “He had a great jump on the ball,” says Twins minor-league infield coordinator Sam Perlozzo, who was watching from the Kernels’ dugout. “He kept a good bead on it with his eyes and went full tilt with no fear of what was in front of him, so that’s impressive. Sometimes he does some things in the infield that you go, ‘I don’t know how he did that.’ There’s no use trying to teach it because I wouldn’t know what to do. He’s a talented young man.” While his teammates marveled at the play, with third baseman Andrew Bechtold saying it “definitely fired everybody up,” Lewis is matter of fact about it. He thinks back to the eight games he played in center field as a senior at JSerra Catholic High School in San Juan Capistrano, Calif., and recalls how much he enjoyed chasing down balls in the air. “Fly balls are easy,” he says. “I’ve always said to people, if they ever move me to the outfield — because that’s what people say — that’s easy for me. All these fly balls, those are the easiest things for me in the infield. That was just a fun one where I had to run and go get it.” The next morning at 11, three hours before the start of the next doubleheader, Perlozzo and Lewis meet at second base to spend 15 minutes sharpening the prospect’s footwork around the bag. Perlozzo still can’t get over the time Lewis interrupted a stream of compliments with a request for more pointed critiques.

“We go around and we do our work early, and then I don’t necessarily want the guys to go into the game thinking about it,” Perlozzo says. “I tell them, ‘Forget it in the game. Don’t think about it and make mistakes by overthinking.’ The more we practice it, the more it will become habit.” And Lewis? “He said, ‘I don’t have time for that. I’ve got to do that right now,’ ” Perlozzo says with a chuckle. “He’s probably the only one that’s ever told me that. I said, ‘OK, I’m with you. Have at it.’ He’s a special guy.” THE BREAKTHROUGH Sunday afternoon, playing under a high sun and 100-degree temps, Lewis homers his first time up, ending a 29-game power drought. His next time up he lofts another fly ball into the same short porch down the left-field line, 315 feet from home plate, just beyond the “Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 125” sign. As it turns out, this was Lewis’ first multi-homer game at any level. “Ever — in my career,” he says later. “Little League, anything. I can go all the way back to T-ball. To get those two, maybe it shuts up a little bit of the haters for the power numbers.” What was that like? “It was kind of an out-of-body experience for me,” he says. “I didn’t know what to do. Obviously, when I came up that third at-bat I was overly anxious and got a little cutter and he threw it a little slower and I was out in front.” A routine grounder to shortstop was the result, but Lewis still blazed down the line to make the play closer than it should have been. Up in the press box, the scoreboard operator says aloud to no one in particular: “Now that’s how you run a ball out.” “I told myself, ‘I’m going to hit like I’m in the back yard playing Wiffle ball,’ ” he says. “Try to hit a home run every time. Why not? Just for fun. I think I’m just bringing back the fun of the game for myself. At the end of the day for me, when I have fun, the game comes a little bit easier.” He mentions the talk with Gardenhire for helping him remember that. He also admits the pressure of expectation had started to wear on him. “Honestly, when you’re 18 going through the low-A minor-league system, it’s hard to handle the struggles of life,” Lewis says. “I think the last three weeks I wasn’t having fun on the field. I was letting my outside stuff get to me on the field. At the end of the day it’s just too much.” With the help of those around him, he found a way forward. “I started just trying to separate the two,” he says. “Have fun, as much fun as I can here, because I love this game. I wasn’t disrespecting it at all the last couple weeks. I just wasn’t having fun when I went out there, and you could tell by my production.” He thought back to something his mother, Cindy Lewis, a former softball pitcher and first baseman at San Jose State, used to tell him. “My mom always used to say you can tell what you’re going to do before you even go out to the field, how you’re going to play,” Lewis says. “It’s not necessarily like I’m having a (bad) attitude or demeanor towards the game, it’s more of like I’m down on myself or I’m not like I normally am: uplifting and having fun. When I’m uplifting and having fun, days like this come into play and my teammates feed off of that. That’s what I pride myself on.” Lookouts' rally falls short in Birmingham Staff Report | Times Free Press | June 2, 2018 BARONS 6, LOOKOUTS 4 Friday's recap: The Lookouts brought the batter representing the go-ahead run to the plate in the ninth inning, but a called third strike ended the game as Chattanooga lost its third straight in Birmingham, Alabama. The Lookouts (31-23), who have lost four of their past five games, trailed 5-1 entering the seventh before Brent Rooker's two-out double scored Brian Navarreto and Sean Miller. In the ninth, Miller drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a passed ball and went to third on Tanner English's single. Rooker, who finished the night 3-for-5, then grounded out but drove in Miller. A strikeout followed before Zander Wiel's single put runners at the corners, but the rally ended there. Chattanooga scored its first run in the third, when Navarreto came home on English's groundout. Birmingham took the game's first lead when Eloy Jimenez's two-out triple in the first was followed by a balk, then added a run in the second on Bryant Flete's double to left. The Barons' big inning was the

fourth, when a bases-loaded double by Zack Collins cleared the bags to make it 5-1, and they added their final run on Flete's RBI single with the bases loaded in the fifth. The game's start was delayed by nearly two hours because of inclement weather. Next up: Game five of a five-game series in Birmingham is tonight at 8:05 EDT. Pitchers: The Lookouts will make another game-day decision, while the Barons are scheduled to start Ian Clarkin (3-5, 6.29)
