Wisconsin tied Pur- due in the league opener, before upsetting #19 Indiana. South Dakota begins the week with a 2-6-1 record, looking for their first win since Sept. 6. On Oct. 2, the Coyotes face off with rival North Dakota. THE SERIES This week the Golden Gophers kick off with their oldest and most frequent opponent as well as with a brand new one. ONE IS THE LONELIEST NUMBERThe Golden Gophers had maybe their best de-fensive performance of the season on 9/20 vs.Montana. After allowing just one shot in the firsthalf, the Minnesota defense held Montana with-out a shot in the second. The one shot allowed isone of the best marks in team history, betteredonly by the five times Minnesota has held their op-ponent to no shots.

TOUGH TO BEAT AT THE ROBBIEThe Golden Gophers extended their unbeatenstreak at the Robbie to 18 matches with their vic-tory over Iowa. The Golden Gophers are now 17-0-1 in their last 18 home contests. They last lostat the Robbie on 11/8/07, falling 3-4 on penaltykicks, after tying Illinois 2-2 in the first round of theBig Ten Tournament.

IN THE TOURNAMENTIllinois was the only Big Ten Team to advance asfar as Minnesota in last season’s NCAA tourna-ment, reaching the Sweet Sixteen. Last weekendthey become Golden Gophers’ sixth opponentwho was a tournament team in 2008. After sixgames this season against last year’s NCAA qual-ifiers, Minnesota is 2-2-2. The only team left onthe docket from the 2008 NCAA tournament isPenn State on Oct. 16.

PERFECT 10Cat Parkhill’s 10 saves against Wisconsin-Mil-waukee on 9/11 are a career high for the fresh-man keeper. After the match, the mark stood asthe best in the Big Ten, but the following weekendwas bettered by Michele Dalton of Wisconsin with12 on 9/20.

BIG TEN FIRSTWith two goals on 9/6 to go along with her two as-sists on 8/21, Molly Rouse became the first playerin the Big Ten this season to have a multi-goaland multi-assist match. She has since beenjoined in the two & two club.

BIG TEN FRESHMAN OF THE WEEKCat Parkhill was named Big Ten Freshman of theWeek on Sept. 7 following her two-shutout per-formance on 9/4 and 9/6. Parkhill stopped all fourshots she saw, playing 200:00 minutes of score-less soccer. It was the first Big Ten honor ofParkhill's career, and the first of the season for theGolden Gophers.

BIG TEN OPENERSThe Golden Gophers 1-0 win over Iowa gavethem a win in their Big Ten opener for just the sec-ond time since 2001. The other time came in 2007when Minnesota opened the conference cam-paign with a 2-1 win over Michigan. Last seasonafter a 10-0 start to the season, Minnesotadropped an 0-2 contest to Michigan State so startthe Big Ten season. From 1994 to 2001, theGolden Gophers won 5-of-8 Big Ten seasonopeners with two of the losses coming in over-time.
