SCOUTING MINNESOTAMinnesota has opened the 2009 campaign with four straight hard-fought contests. The Gophers defeated Syracuse 23-20 in overtime, came from behind to defeat Air Force 20-13 and pulled away from Northwestern late in a 35-24 win last week. Minnesota’s loss was a 35-21 setback to nationally-ranked California in a game that was tied 21-21 midway through the fourth quarter.

Quarterback Adam Weber returns after taking nearly every snap for the past two-plus seasons. He set the Minnesota single-season records for passing yardage (2,895), TDs passing (24), completions (258) and attempts (449) in 2007. Earlier this season, he became the Gophers’ career completions leader and currently has a total of 588. Wide receiver Eric Decker set a Minnesota record for career receptions vs. Cal and currently has 212. He set a single-season receptions record last season for the second consecu-tive year, grabbing 84. Decker was a Biletnikoff Award finalist and an All-Big Ten selection in 2008.

Defensively, Minnesota is allowing 23 points per game. The Gophers rank No. 59 in the nation in scoring defense. The Gopher linebacking corps has had at least one double-digit tackler in each game this season. Nate Triplett, Lee Campbell and Simoni Lawrence are the starters at LB. Up front, Eric Small (12 tackles, 3 TFL, 3 sacks) and Cedric McKinley (11 tackles, 3 TFL, 2 FR) lead the way. The secondary returns three starters -- CBs Marcus Sherels and Traye Simmons and safety Kyle Theret.

SCOUTING WISCONSINWisconsin enters the Border Battle sporting an unblem-ished 4-0 mark. The Badgers aren’t untested, however. Three of their wins have come by a combined total of 19 points, including a double-overtime victory over Fresno State.

Wisconsin is coached by Bret Bielema, who is in his fourth season as the head coach in Madison. He is in his sixth season on the Wisconsin staff. Bielema has taken the Badgers to bowl games in each of his first three seasons at the helm of the program.

Offensively, Wisconsin is one of the more prolific teams in the Big Ten and the nation. The Badgers are No. 27 in the nation in total offense, No. 30 in rushing and No. 49 in passing. They are averaging 22 points per game, ranking No. 22. On the flip side, Wisconsin is 78th in total defense and 68th in scoring defense, allowing 23.75 points per game.

GOLDEN GOPHER HEAD COACH TIM BREWSTERIn two short years as the head football coach at the University of Minnesota, Tim Brewster has taken some big steps toward getting Golden Gopher program back to its rightful place in the world of college football.

Brewster has used his positive outlook and boundless energy to bring in two highly-regarded recruiting classes.

On the field, the Gophers returned to postseason play in 2008 and were ranked as high as No. 17 in the nation for part of the season.

In 2008, Brewster’s squad raced out to a 7-1 record to open the sea-son. The Gophers were ranked No. 17 in the BCS at the end of October. Minnesota took part in the 2008 Insight Bowl, as Brewster led the Gophers to one of the biggest single-season turnarounds of the year.

A renewed emphasis on recruiting may be the most visible phase of Brewster’s plan to help Minnesota football make history again. That was proven out in February of each of the past two seasons. Brewster and his staff signed a consensus top-25 recruiting class that some experts even rated among the nation’s top 15 in 2008. The significance of this accomplishment would be difficult to overstate at one the nation’s traditional recruiting powers let alone Minnesota, where the average Rivals ranking for the Gophers’ previous six recruit-ing classes was 54th. Brewster and his staff followed that up with a 2009 class that ranked in the top third of the nation.

But recruiting is just one building block of a blueprint Brewster devel-oped while helping Mack Brown turn North Carolina from ACC doormat into a national power and rebuild Texas into one of the country’s elite programs.

Brewster came to Minnesota after spending the previous five years as an assistant coach in the National Football League, including the 2005 and 2006 seasons as the tight ends coach of the Denver Broncos. In addition to his productivity as a college recruiter, Brewster has also built a strong reputation for developing players during his 23-year coaching career.

Last season, wide receiver Eric Decker and defensive end Willie VanDeSteeg both earned first-team All-Big Ten honors. Decker set a Minnesota record for receptions in a season for the second consecutive year and became just the third Gopher wideout to record a 1,000-yard receiving season. VanDeSteeg finished his career as the school’s all-time leader in tackles for loss and finished No. 4 all-time in sacks.

It marked the first time the Gophers had multiple first-team All-Big Ten selections since 2005. VanDeSteeg’s honor was also the first time a Minnesota defender had been voted to the first team since 2004.In his first season at Minnesota, Brewster mentored then-freshman quarterback Adam Weber, who broke nearly all of the Gophers’ single-season passing and total offense records during the 2007 season. Weber continued to improve in his sophomore campaign and was a 2008 second-team All-Big Ten selection.

In all, Minnesota had six athletes earn all-conference accolades in 2008, the most since the Gophers had a half-dozen on the 2005 All-Big Ten squad.

In 2007, Brewster helped coach safety Dominique Barber to second-team All-Big Ten accolades and personally worked with punter Justin Kucek, expanding his repertoire with the effective and efficient flop punt and helping him evolve into one of the conferences top punters.

Brewster was named Minnesota’s 26th head football coach on Jan. 17, 2007 after spending the previous five seasons as an assistant coach in the National Football League.

(Sept. 26, 2009) -- Duane Bennett ran for three touchdowns and Adam Weber passed for two scores to lead Minnesota to a 35-24 victory over Northwestern.

The Golden Gophers finally held on against Northwestern after losing to the Wildcats in the final seconds the two previous years. Minnesota trailed briefly, 24-21, after Northwestern’s Mike Kafka hit a leaping Brendan Mitchell with a 13-yard touchdown pass in the closing seconds of the third quarter.

Minnesota started the fourth quarter with an 83-yard scoring drive, getting a 10-yard pass from Weber to Brandon Green on third down at the Wildcat 23 before Bennett ran it in from the 4 to make it 28-24.

Any chance Northwestern had at a comeback ended when Cedric McKinley stripped Kafka and recovered the fumble. That led to a 1-yard TD from Weber to Eric Decker, making it 35-24. The Gophers’ D.L. Wilhite then stripped Kafka again and recovered the fumble with 1:26 to play.

Bennett ran for 89 yards and Weber threw for 186. He was intercepted once and threw both touchdowns to Eric Decker, who caught eight passes for 84 yards.

THE WISCONSIN SERIES

LAST TIME VS. WISCONSIN

Saturday’s game will be the 119th gridiron meeting between the University of Minnesota and Wisconsin. Minnesota leads the series 59-51-8, but has lost the last five and 12 of the last 14.

The 118 games played to date vs. the Badgers make the Minnesota-Wisconsin series the most-played series in NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) history. The Gophers and Badgers are charter members of the Big Ten Conference.

(Nov. 15, 2008 - Minneapolis) -- Minnesota led 21-7 at halftime and 24-17 after three quarters but couldn’t hold on over the final 15 minutes as Wisconsin used a huge rally to claim Paul Bunyan’s Axe for the fifth straight season.

After a sterling second quarter that saw the Golden Gophers reel off three straight touchdowns, the Bad-gers outscored Minnesota 28-10 over the final 30 minutes. Wisconsin capped a second-half rally with a pair of safeties and a touchdown off a Minnesota turnover in the fourth quarter, beating the Gophers 35-32 at Camp Randall Stadium.

The Badgers fell behind 21-7 at halftime, but rallied to tie the game at 24 on a 1-yard touchdown run by P.J. Hill. The ensuing kickoff was fumbled by Minnesota’s Troy Stoudermire and the ball trickled out of the end zone for a safety to give the Badgers a 26-24 lead. Minnesota had third-and-16 at its own 1-yard line on its next possession. Wisconsin’s sacked Weber in the end zone, giving the Badgers a 28-24 lead.Things continued to slide for the Gophers as a fubmle was recovered by Wisconsin at the Minnesota 11. Wisconsin’s John Clay scored on a 5-yard run two plays later, extending the lead to 35-24.

GOPHERS vs. BIG TEN

BATTLE FOR BUNYAN’S AXEAt 118 games and counting, the series between Minnesota and Wisconsin ranks as the longest in Division 1-A football. “Paul Bunyan’s Axe” has the history of one of college football’s fiercest rivalries emblazoned on its six-foot long handle.

The first game in the series, a 63-0 Gopher victory in 1890, is printed on the handle near the axe’s head. The results of every successive game line the handle in red ink. There have been so many games that the scores scroll up and down the width of both sides of the handle, and school officials have now resorted to writing scores on the narrow edges of the six-foot shaft.

By 1930, “Paul Bunyan’s Axe” wasn’t even created, although the rivalry had already reached feverish levels. The 1906 game was canceled by President Theodore Roosevelt, who had decided to cool off heated college football rivalries, because of injuries and deaths on the field. In 1914, Minnesota faced the Badgers for the Gophers’ first Homecoming game; likewise, Wisconsin hosted Minnesota for the Badgers’ first in 1919. Between the years 1923 and 1925, the teams battled to three straight ties.

To symbolically capture the amazing atmosphere of the annual match-up, Dr. R.B. Fouch of Minneapolis fashioned a bacon slab out of black walnut to serve as a traveling trophy. The “Slab of Bacon,” first played for in 1930, had a football carved on top inscribed with an “M” or “W”, depending on how you held it. The idea was that the winning team would “bring home the bacon.”

But in the early ’40s, the Slab of Bacon became the “Missing Slab of Bacon.” Peg Watrous, who was the president of Wisconsin women students at the time, relates that she and her counterpart from Minnesota were to have a symbolic exchange after the game, whereby the trophy would be awarded to the winning team. Min-nesota won, but in characteristic fashion, a postgame melee broke out on the field, with students and specta-tors running crazy over the field. Watrous couldn’t find her counterpart, and was left “holding the bacon,” as it were. “I have no memory of what happened after that…The whole thing was a dud, as I feared it would be,” Watrous remembered good-humoredly, “and someone in charge probably hid the bacon.”

But the two teams had to play for something, so in 1948 the Wisconsin W Club instituted “Paul Bunyan’s Axe” as a trophy more befitting the grand rivalry between the two schools. The annual battles have survived so long that in the ’60s the teams started to print the games’ final scores smaller and smaller, scrunching the letters in order to avoid reaching the end of the axe’s shaft. But the series continued to roll, and the last game to be painted on the broad face of the handle was in 1980. The subsequent games appear on the narrow side.

The Slab of Bacon was back in the news in the summer of 1994, when the long-lost trophy was found after a Camp Randall Stadium storage room was cleaned out. Wisconsin officials estimated that it had been missing since 1945; yet the scores of every game from 1930-70 were printed on the back of the slab. It is one of those mysteries that remains unexplained, and contributes to the legend of the “Border Battle” rivalry.

AYE, CAPTAIN!

NOTHIN’ BUT NET

The Golden Gophers elected six captains prior to the 2009 season. Seniors Garrett Brown, Lee Campbell, Eric Decker, Simoni Lawrence and Eric Small join junior Adam Weber with that distinction this season.

Weber was the first sophomore ever to serve as a team captain at the University of Minnesota last season and is now a two-time captain. Decker is also a two-time team captain.

The Gophers have only had 13 players ever earn the distinction of captain twice in their career. Weber would be the first-ever three-year Gopher captain should he be voted as such next season.

Through the first four games of the 2009 season, Minnesota’s net punting average (punt yardage-minus return yards/touchbacks) ranks No. 14 in the nation. The Gophers’ net punting average is 40.25 yards per punt. The Gophers have punted 20 times with three punts of 50-plus yards and six downed inside the 20-yard line. Opponents are averaging just 3.6 yards per return against the Minnesota punt cover-age team.

RETURN TO SENDERThe return game was a definite strength for the Gophers in 2008. Minnesota was the No. 2 team in the Big Ten and ranked No. 15 in the nation in average kickoff return yards. The Gophers averaged 24.04 yards per kickoff return last season. The longest kickoff return last season was turned in by Troy Stoud-ermire, who went 60 yards at the Insight Bowl vs. Kansas.

The Gophers nearly doubled their punt-return average in 2008, averaging 9.94 yards per return. Min-nesota ranked No. 5 in the Big Ten and No. 46 in the nation in punt returns.

So far in the 2009 season, the Gophers have continued to improve in the return game. Minnesota ranks No. 10 in the country and No. 1 in the Big Ten with an average punt return of 19.0 yards. Kickoff returner Troy Stoudermire’s first return of the season was a 54-yarder. As a team, the Gophers are averaging 26.5 yards per kickoff return, which ranks No. 25 in the nation and No. 3 in the conference.

GO BIG REDMinnesota is 14-of-15 (93 percent) scoring when in the red zone (inside the opponents’ 20-yard line) this season. The Gophers have scored 10 touchdowns in the red zone and kicked four field goals.

The Gophers are tied for No. 23 in the nation at 93 percent success in the red zone. Twelve teams are still flawless in the red zone this season, including this week’s opponent. Wisconsin is 16-of-16 with 14 TDs and two field goals when they get inside the opponents’ 20-yard line.

The Gophers were 36-of-41 (88 percent) in the red-zone during the 2008 season.

BAKING TURNOVERSOne of the biggest factors in Minnesota’s impressive turnaround last season was the Gophers’ ability to cause turnovers. The Gophers created 31 turnovers last season (16 fumble recoveries, 15 interceptions) to rank No. 11 in the nation. Only Iowa created more turnovers in the Big Ten with 32.

The Gophers also ranked No. 16 in the nation in turnover margin (+0.92 avg.). The Minnesota offense took turned it over just 19 times in 2008 (11 fumbles lost, eight INTs).

Minnesota was minus-three in the turnover battle through its first three games. However, the Gophers finished with a plus-two turnover ratio last week at Northwestern, getting an interception and two fumble recoveries. The Gophers currently rank 75th in the nation (-0.25/game) in turnover margin.

STACKING THE DECK

u Gopher quarterback Adam Weber continues to re-write the Minnesota record book. In Week 2, he set the Minnesota record for career completions (his total is now 588). The previous record of 539 comple-tions was held by Cory Sauter (1994-97). Two weeks ago, he set the Gopher career record for passing attempts (his total is now 988). Weber set single-season records for passing yards (2,985), completions (258), attempts (449), touchdown passes (24) and total offensive yardage (3,512) in 2007. He now needs 911 yards to break the career mark for passing yardage (Bryan Cupito, 2003-06 - 7,446) and just 12 more touchdowns (Bryan Cupito, 2003-06 - 55) to break the career touchdown pass record.

u Adam Weber is the only quarterback on the Minnesota roster who has ever thrown a collegiate pass.u Weber is 67-of-106 (63.2 percent) for 804 yards since the beginning of the fourth quarter of the season-opener. He was 8-of-23 (34.8 percent) for 75 yards in the first three quarters vs. Syracuse.u Weber threw 19 interceptions in his first season as a starter in 2007. He significantly improved that total in 2008, throwing just eight picks. Weber has had only two games with multiple interceptions since the 2007 season.u Freshman MarQueis Gray is Minnesota’s No. 2 QB. He rushed for 33 yards on five carries last week. u Gray scored his first collegiate touchdown vs. Cal two weeks ago on a 7-yard pass from Eric Decker. u Gray is a true freshman. He was rated as the No. 3 dual-threat QB in the nation coming out of India-napolis Ben Davis High School. u Two other signal-callers are listed on Minnesota’s roster -- freshmen Moses Alipate and Adam Lueck.

u Sophomore Duane Bennett scored a career-best three touchdowns Saturday at Northwestern. He hit paydirt twice from one yard out and once from four yards. Bennett rushed for 89 yards on 21 carries last week. The 21 carries were also a career-high for Bennett. His rushing total was the third most in his Gopher career. He ran for 106 vs. Michigan as a freshman in 2007. He went for 92 in the season-opener vs. Northern Illinois in 2008, before going down with a season-ending knee injury in Game Two.

u Duane Bennett scored on his first touch of the 2009 season, taking a carry around right end for a 16-yard touchdown at Syracuse. Bennett rushed for 78 yards in his first game back since the knee injury.u Bennett is the first Gopher to score three touchdowns in a game since DeLeon Eskridge accom-plished that feat vs. Montana State on Sept. 13, 2008.u Eskridge, a sophomore, rushed for more than 100 yards twice in 2008, including a season-high 124 yards in Minnesota’s 27-20 win at Illinois. He also had three multiple-touchdown contests.u Red-shirt freshman Kevin Whaley saw the first extended action of his career last week. He carried five times for 31 yards vs. Northwestern.u Junior fullback Jon Hoese is a former walk-on. He scored on two of his first three career carries at the Insight Bowl last season. He is averaging 7.5 yards per carry so far this season.u Sophomore Shady Salamon rushed for 181 yards (3.7 yards per carry) in 2008.

u Senior wide receiver Eric Decker became Minnesota’s career receptions leader two weeks ago when he hauled in a 12-yard TD pass from Adam Weber in the second quarter vs. Cal. He also recorded his fourth straight 100-yard receiving game (dating back to the 2008 Insight Bowl), which is also a school record. The 100-yard games streak came to an end last week at Northwestern. Decker was a semi-final-ist for the Biletnikoff Award as the nation’s top receiver in 2008. For two straight seasons, Decker set the Minnesota single-season record for receptions. He hauled in 67 passes in 2007 and smashed that record with 84 receptions last season. Decker became just the fourth Gopher receiver ever to compile a 1,000-yard season in 2008, finishing with 1,074 yards to rank No. 2 on the school single-season chart.

The average height and weight of the top 10 Minnesota offensive linemen is 6-4, 308 pounds. Senior tackle Matt Stommes and junior tackle Jeff Wills are both 6-7. Wills is the heaviest Gopher, tipping the scales at 365 pounds.

u Minnesota returned a combined 44 starts among all its offensive linemen from 2008 this season. That number would jump to 57 if Ryan Wynn was included. Wynn’s status for 2009 has yet to be deter-mined after back surgery he underwent on August 24. The Gophers lost only Jason Meinke’s eight starts. u Senior center Jeff Tow-Arnett returns healthy after competing on a torn ACL in six of his starts and seven of his games played last year. He has made every offensive snap this season.u Junior guard D.J. Burris started at right guard in place of Matt Carufel last week at Northwestern. Burris made his 21st career start. u Freshman defensive end D.L. Wilhite has three tackles in three games. But he’s made the most of his opportunities. Wilhite recorded a sack at Syracuse in the season-opener for his first collegiate tackle. Last week at Northwestern, one of his two stops was another sack. Late in the fourth quarter, he got to Wildcat quarterback Mike Kafka, stripped him and recovered the fumble to help salt away the victory.

u Senior starting defensive tackles Garrett Brown and Eric Small team up to provide a formidable force in the middle of the Gopher defense. They have a combined 19 stops this season.u Small picked up his third sack in as many weeks vs. Northwestern. He’s tied for the Big Ten lead in sacks.u Brown and Small have more-than-capable backups behind them in the middle of the Minnesota defensive line. LINEBACKER NOTEBOOK

u Senior linebacker Nate Triplett has had back-to-back double-digit and team-high tackle numbers in his last three games. His 17 total tackles, a 52-yard fumble return for a touchdown and a PBU vs. Air Force made him Big Ten and National Player of the Week. Triplett registered a game-high 11 tackles last week at Northwestern. He leads the team, the Big Ten and the nation with 33 solo tackles.

u Triplett ranks No. 2 in the Big Ten in total tackles. His 47 total stops are second to 52 for Greg Jones of Michigan State. Triplett also ranks No. 8 in the nation in total stops.u The 17 tackles recorded by Triplett (including 12 solo tackles) vs. Air Force were the most by a Gopher defender since Nov. 23, 2002 when Eli Ward tallied 23 stops at Wisconsin.u Triplett was one of Minnesota’s special teams aces over the past two years. He has won the Bobby Bell Award as the team’s top special teams player each of the last two seasons. u Senior linebacker Lee Campbell is No. 2 on the team, No. 5 in the Big Ten and No. 21 in the nation in total tackles, recording 40 so far this season. u Senior linebacker Simoni Lawrence is No. 3 on the team, recording 35 so far this season. That total is good for No. 7 in the Big Ten.u Backup linebacker Keanon Cooper tallied a career-best seven stops vs. Cal in the first extended ac-tion of his career. He backed that up with six stops at Northwestern last week.

u Senior cornerback Marcus Sherels made his first appearance and first start since the season-opener last week at Northwestern. He made an immediate impact in his return to the lineup. Sherels tal-lied seven tackles vs. the Wildcats. He ranked No. 4 in the Big Ten and No. 25 in the nation in passes defended last season, with 11 pass break-ups and two interceptions.

He also made three interceptions in 2008, to rank No. 10 in the Big Ten.u Junior safety Kim Royston, who transferred from Wisconsin in 2008, had to walk-on and was unable to compete due to Big Ten transfer rules. He has 17 stops, including five last week at Northwestern.u Royston picked up his first Gopher interception last week at Northwestern, thwarting a potential Wildcat scoring drive at the Minnesota 2-yard line. His only other career pick was vs. Minnesota in 2007.u Freshman cornerback Michael Carter saw the first extended action of his career last week.u Senior CB Traye Simmons has broken up three passes to tie for the team lead in 2009.

u Senior punter Blake Haudan found it he was going to be punting vs. California two weeks ago about 12 hours before the game. It was discovered Dan Orseske had mononucleosis the night before the game, pressing Haudan into duty. His first career punt pinned Cal inside its own 20-yard line. In two games as a punter, Haudan is averaging 41.5 yards per punt with five fair catches and three downed inside the 20.

u Junior long snapper Ryan Coleman has been very consistent since taking over the long-snapping duties last season. He has delivered 30 successful long snaps through two games this season (20 punt, 6 FG, 12 PAT). Coleman made 128 snaps in 2008, with only one bad snap.u Junior placekicker Eric Ellestad remained perfect on PATs (12-12), hitting all 5 attempts last week. He is 5-of-6 on field goals, with the lone miss being tipped at the line on a missed assignment up front. Dave Mona, Dave Lee, Darrell Thompson, Mike Grimm

MINNESOTA at SYRACUSE

TCF BANK STADIUM FACTS• TCF Bank Stadium was designed as an open-air, horseshoe-shaped bowl with a collegiate look and feel. The stadium is oriented to take advantage of the views of downtown Minneapolis.

• The brick façade and arches resemble that of Minnesota’s previous on-campus football venue, Memorial Stadium, which hosted its final game on Nov. 21, 1981.

• The University exceeded its initial fund-raising goal of $86 million.

• Construction began on TCF Bank Stadium on July 11, 2007. It took over 1.3 million work hours to complete the project by July , 2009.

• The main high definition video measures approximately 48 feet high by 108 feet wide and boasts Daktronics HD-16 technology.

• The main high definition video board is the third largest in all of college athletics in terms of square footage. Only Texas and Mississippi State have larger boards.

• The main video board screen is made up of more than four million LED lights that if placed end to end would extend for 47.5 miles.

• At the project’s peak, 750 construction workers were working on TCF Bank Stadium.

• The site of TCF Bank Stadium covers 1,194,645 SF or approximately 27.4 acres.

• The playing surface is FieldTurf and covers 92,132 SF or approxi-mately 2.1 acres.

• The home locker room at TCF Bank Stadium is 60 yards long by 25 yards wide. It contains 120 cherry wood lockers and is the largest in both professional and college football.

• The design of TCF Bank Stadium allows for expansion to 80,000.

• There are approximately 25,000 seats with permanent chairbacks. All seats between the goal lines have permanent chairbacks.• TCF Bank Stadium includes 1,000 handicap accessible and companion seats.

• There are 37 premium suites, 57 loge boxes, 259 seats in the indoor club and 1,250 seats in the outdoor club at TCF Bank Stadium.

• There are 113 restrooms in TCF Bank Stadium, which include 625 toilets and 268 urinals.

• TCF Bank Stadium has 10 network TV camera positions and seating for 165 members of the media.

• Populous (formerly HOK Sport) served as the primary architect for the building, while Mortensen Construction was the general contractor.

• In excess of 8,800 tons of structural steel was used in the project, with 97 percent recycled steel.

• TCF Bank Stadium contains 24,000 yards of cast-in-place concrete, which is enough concrete to pour a four-inch thick, five-foot wide sidewalk from Minneapolis to Rochester, Minn. (74 miles).

• The masonry includes 525,000 units of concrete block and 760,000 units of full and thin brick.

• There is 72,753 SF or approximately 1.7 acres of glass in TCF Bank Stadium, enough to cover more than 1.25 football fields.

• There are 9,185 Minnesota Block “M”s in TCF Bank Stadium.

• The foundation of TCF Bank Stadium is supported by 2,133 drilled piles, which is equivalent to 15.5 miles of piles.

GOPHER VICTORY WALKThe Golden Gopher football program saw a new tradition take shape in 2007, with the advent of the “Gopher Victory Walk.” Prior to each game, the entire Minnesota football team, led by the Minnesota Marching Band, will walk through the fans at the McNamara Alumni Center, cross Oak Street and head into TCF Bank Stadium.

Each Gopher Victory Walk will begin approximately two hours prior to kickoff.

The Minnesota Football program is encouraging fans to participate in the Gopher Victory Walk through-out the season, by lining the entire path from the McNamara Alumni Center to the stadium and greeting the players as they arrive on game day.

TAKE IT TO THE BANKWhen the Gophers hosted the Air Force Academy on Sept. 12, it marked the first time since Nov. 21, 1981 that college football has been played on campus at Minnesota.

TCF Bank Stadium is the first Big Ten Stadium built in nearly 50 years. Beaver Stadium (Penn State) and Memorial Stadium (Indiana) were both built in 1960. TCF Bank Stadium will be just the second new stadium built in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) and the first in a BCS conference since 1998. Akron also christened a brand-new stadium this season.

In May 2006, the Minnesota legislature made the stadium a reality, approving the $288.5 million facility. The stadium holds 50,805 fans and is an open-air facility. Construction began during the summer of 2007.
