Copies of these SPT Boring logs are included with this report. The soils encountered at the proposed location consisted of 8 to 12 ft. of loamy sand followed by sand and gravel until the borings terminated at a depth of 33 to 36 ft. Groundwater was encountered at a depth of 17 to 22 ft. in all three borings (Approximate elevation of 1215 ft.). Refer to the attached boring logs for a more detailed and complete description of the foundation soils. 3.0 Foundation Analysis The proposed box culvert was analyzed for a shallow foundation (spread footing). The bottom of the culvert was assumed to be the footing during analysis. The approximate bottom of footing elevation is in the range of 1223 to 1224 ft. The soils below the proposed culvert location were determined to have adequate bearing capacity. 3.1 Settlement In order to keep settlement below 1 in. and to provide for a uniform foundation base, it is recommended to have a 2 ft. (minimum) subcut filled with Aggregate Bedding beneath the bottom of the footing. It is also recommended that a geosynthetic layer be place at the base of the subcut to provide separation between fine and coarse grained materials Page 1 of 2 An Equal Opportunity Employer

District 8 Willmar From: Derek Stecker, Graduate Engineer Trainee Geotechnical Engineering Section Concur: Rich Lamb, Foundations Engineer Geotechnical Engineering Section Subject: SP 3408-18 (District 8) Culvert # 34X06 TH 23 Under DNR Pedestrian Trail located at junction of CR 135 Foundation Investigation and Recommendations

1.0 Project Description This report provides a Foundation Investigation and Recommendations for construction of a single line of 8’x7’ reinforced concrete box culvert (Bridge #34X06) for pedestrian traffic. 2.0 Subsurface Investigation Three Standard Penetration Tests (SPT) Borings were performed in January of 2017 near the proposed box culvert location. It is also recommended that a geosynthetic layer be place at the base of the subcut to provide separation between fine and coarse grained materials

4.0 Recommendations Based on the existing conditions along with an analysis of the project soils, we recommend the following:

1. A 2 ft. minimum Coarse Aggregate Bedding (MnDOT Spec 3149.2G.2) compacted to 95% of Standard Proctor be placed below the proposed bottom of culvert to reduce settlement and provide for a uniform foundation base.

2. A MnDOT Type V separation geosynthetic (MnDOT Spec. 3733) should be place at the base of the subcut excavation between the native soils and the replacement backfill. The geosynthetic should extend at least 5 ft. beyond the side walls of the box culvert.

3. The trench for the culvert replacement be excavated down at a 1:1.5 (V:H) slope and should include a 1:20 taper for frost differential protection
