Calendar of Events

From your editor

In an effort to keep everyone up to date with all of the MDGA’s events and special

announcements, we will be starting something new.

We will be starting a members only Facebook page. It will be open to paid membership

holders. I will do my best to find everyone on Facebook and invite them to the page but if you

could please email me to let me know you are on Facebook, I would greatly appreciate it.

For those of you who don’t have Facebook, we will be trying to send out mini e-newsletters.

These sources will not replace your Gopher Goat Gossip. They are intended to keep you up to

date in between each newsletter.

If we don’t have your email address please contact [email protected].

Thank you, Casey Prochniak, GGG Editor

Biographies of Board Members Up for Election We have 3 positions on the MDGA Board that are up for election. The following candidates have agreed

to run for a three year term. Please send ballots to Mary Thompson (nominating committee chair) or

return them to the ballot box at the MDGA Conference, November 2nd.

Allan Weinand Hi – My name is Allan Weinand and I live on a small farm in southeast Fillmore County, Canton

Township near Mabel, MN. I have a herd of Nigerian Dwarf Dairy goats that I milk 2x’s a day.

We have also participated in herd ADGA linear appraisal, 1 day milk testing and a number of

ADGA shows with our goats. Our farm name is Wren Hill Farm. I grew up on a multi-

generational farm in western Hennepin County where, as I was growing up, I helped my grand-

parents milk their small herd of Holstein cows every day. I was also active in 4H showing at the

county and state fair as a youth. After college I worked in health care for a number of years with

disabled and traumatic brain injury survivors and the last few years in health care proposal writ-

ing. I am also a member of the Land Stewardship Project and a graduate of their Farm Beginnings

Program.

I have been a member of MDGA the last several years and have enjoyed the opportunities MDGA

events and ADGA shows have provided to network and get to know other members from all over

the state. I have enjoyed volunteering with the annual MDGA fall conference and related events

and this past year’s National Sow in St. Paul. I believe educating and creating learning opportuni-

ties is very important to maintaining and growing the interest in dairy goats. And I have been im-

pressed with the MDGA’s work in this area – especially with the youth. I would be honored to

serve on the MDGA board and would work to continue and expand learning opportunities and

networking for our members and the overall promotion of dairy goats.

Michelle Scheglowski

My name is Michelle Scheglowski. I am truly excited to be running for the MDGA Board of Di-

rectors! Although I am relatively new to the dairy goat world, I have a passion for anything and

everything related to dairy goats. My “goat experience” (read: addiction) started about six years

ago when my oldest son leased a La Mancha as an introduction to the 4-H Dairy Goat project.

One thing led to another and now we have a small herd of our own. I have since become quite

actively involved in the 4-H Dairy Goat Project both on the county and state levels. I serve as the

Dakota County Goat PDC chair and help oversee our “Kids for Kids” program. I also volunteer

on the MN State Fair 4-H Dairy Goat Committee, assisting with the show and management inter-

views. I had an opportunity to help on the ADGA National Show Youth Committee this past year

as well. I find great joy in helping youth grow and develop in the goat project! Always learning,

I enjoy reading about herd management, watching goat shows, listening to judges give reasons

and discussing dairy goats at every opportunity. I have come to know many wonderful people in

the dairy goat world and I would love an opportunity to serve on the MDGA board.

Lauren Schifsky

Dear Minnesota Dairy Goat Association members. My name is Lauren Schifksky and I am run-

ning to serve as a board of director. I am currently a senior at the University of Wisconsin River

Falls. I will be graduating in May with a degree in Animal Science. My involvement with goats

started in 1997 when I was six years old with two pet goats. A few years latter I began raising

dairy goats and became actively involved in the dairy goat industry. As an advocate of the dairy

goat industry I see the importance of promoting dairy goats and their products. As a board mem-

ber I would like to continue to promote and raise awareness of the dairy goat industry through

activities such as sanctioned shows and the annual MDGA fall conference. I also see the im-

portance youth serve to the future of the dairy goat industry. Events such as the youth show are a

way to encourage youth to stay involved with dairy goats and to keep our industry growing. I

hope you will consider me to run as a board of director.

Ballot for 2013 MDGA Board of Directors MDGA has 3 director positions available for election in 2013. Please read the biography information provided in the October GGG for more details about each candidate. Please vote for up to 3 of the following candidates to fill these open positions.

__________ Allan Weinard Write in candidates: __________ Michelle Scheglowski _________________ __________ Lauren Schifsky _________________ _________________ Ballots can be cast in person at the MDGA Goat Breeder’s Conference in St. Paul on Nov 2nd (bring this ballot with you) or mailed to the nominating committee chair. All votes need to be received by November 15th, 2013. If not turning in your vote at the

conference, please mail ballots to: Mary Thompson, 9593 Mound Prairie Dr, Houston, MN 55943.
