Welcome to the Year of Dance at the 36th annual Minnesota Bluegrass & Old-Time Music Festival! This event is produced by the Minnesota Bluegrass & Old-Time Music Association (MBOTMA), and has been nominated four times as Event of the Year (2005, 2007, 2010, & 2013) by the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) in Nashville.

We are over-the-top thrilled to host a reunion of the very first IBMA Entertainers of the Year, Hot Rize, along with the most recent IBMA Entertainers of the Year, Balsam Range. We have a terrific Main Stage lineup planned.

But this year we’re also excited about the dance activity we have planned at all of our venues. There will be square and barn dances, swing and honky-tonk dances, Cajun and clogging, workshops and demos.

We hope you’ll enjoy the more than 30 hours of Main Stage concerts, daytime instrument collaborations, and nightly dances in the Showcase Tent, fun and games in the Family Area, 20 hands-on workshops in the Workshop Area, new excitement at the Underground, dozens of food and merchant booths in the Marketplace, late night shows at Ranch House Live, the Gathering Place, and all the campground jam sessions.

In this issue, find out what’s happening off the Main Stage, starting on page 5. A full schedule starts on page 17; you can pull out the center section and bring it with you to the festival.

These activities are made possible in part by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

We also owe our thanks to our sponsors, our members, and our more than 400 volunteers(!). Thank you all for keeping us going. Be there. Be square.—Jed Malischke, MBOTMA Executive Director

Minnesota Bluegrass & Old-Time Music Festival 2015 Volume 3: Off the Main StageBy Ann Iijima

As MBOTMA celebrates its 40th Anniversary, the Minnesota Bluegrass & Old-Time Music Festival will celebrate MBOTMA’s music from its roots to its newest branches. In the last two issues, Minnesota Bluegrass focused on the bluegrass and old-time bands that will be appearing on the Main Stage and in the dance tent. But folks who limit their festival experience to these areas are missing half the fun (and 1,208 acres can support a lot of fun!). To help make sure you don’t miss out, this month we spotlight the wide variety of shows and programs available off the Main Stage areas: workshops, showcases, programs for the kids, Ranch House Live, and the pre-festival jam camps.

Showcase/Dance Tent (Sponsored by The State Bank of Richmond)“Showcases” are special shows or demon-strations with a common theme. With its stage, large dance floor, and room for several hundred people, the Showcase Tent will present a wide variety of these exciting events.

For example, several performers of the same instrument but from different bands may be brought together to share tips and techniques for playing and performing. Musicians talk about their instruments, influences, techniques, and style, and demonstrate their craft in an informal manner. And festivalgoers get a chance to ask questions and talk with the performers.

Because 2015 has a dance theme, the Showcase Tent will be the dance epicen-ter with demonstrations and workshops. And it will transform into a dance hall. We have some great old-time, square, Cajun, and polka dances planned.

On Friday and Saturday mornings, the Showcase Tent becomes a yoga studio with the return of Lucy Weberling and Inner Smiles Yoga. On Sunday, it becomes a church with a non-denom-inational service and plenty of gospel singing.

Check out the Showcase/Dance Tent schedule on the special pullout section in the middle of this month’s magazine. We’re still adding programs for the Showcase Tent, so check our website for updates at minnesotabluegrass.org.

Bluegrass Karaoke is back!It was so much fun last year we wanted to do it again. Bluegrass Karaoke is back on Friday starting at 12:30 p.m. in the Showcase Tent. With the Good Intentions as your back-up band, this will be your chance to get up and sing with some of the best. Festival attend-ees will get a chance to pick a song and join the band onstage to show off their talents. This event is open to all ages that can carry a tune, play an instrument, or both.

Participants will be encouraged to choose a song to sing within the realm of bluegrass or related standards. Instrumental pieces are also welcome. 5-minute time slots are designed for individual performers. Sign-up will start Friday at 9 a.m. in the Gathering Place, and will move to the Showcase Tent starting at noon, if any slots are still available. We hope you’ll join us for this great addition to our festival.

The Underground (Sponsored by Harvest Carriers)The Underground is the new name of the Young Talent Stage, the newest venue at the Minnesota Bluegrass & Old-Time Music Festival. The old name implied the place was for kids. It is, but it isn’t. We hope that all ages will find the Underground a cool place to hang, meet

friends, and see great music that may be just a bit out-of-the-box.

The music and activities schedule has been expanded and will include stage shows both Friday and Saturday from 5:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., and also several showcases on Saturday afternoon from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Many of our Main Stage acts will be visiting the Underground, including the Fish Heads, Borderstone, and the Bucking Mules. In addition we’ll be hosting several additional acts like the Dumpy Jug Bumpers, the Wailing Loons, and Barton’s Hollow. We also have two very special guests that you won’t be able to see anywhere else at the festival, Tin Can Gin and the Dead Pigeons.

On Friday at 7:30 p.m. as well as Saturday at 9:30 p.m. it’s Tin Can Gin, from Minnesota’s Northshore. Tin Can Gin was born and brewed upon the shores of Lake Superior near Duluth by childhood pals Harrison Olk and Trevor Marrin. Along with mandolinist Bryan Nelson, the trio created the trade-mark TCG tunes that are fan favorites to this very day. In the autumn of 2011 the group was summoned to the stage at their first gig as “Tin Can Gin”. As time passed the band added fiddle vir-tuoso Nori Perrine and Neil Krause on stand-up bass to round out the Tin Can Gin sound. That unique sound draws from each member’s musical upbringing. Harrison’s traditional bluegrass banjo, Trevor’s creative song writing and guitar work, Bryan’s fast folk pickin’ mandolin,

Neil’s solid bass backing, all wrapped and complimented with a sprinkle of Nori’s Celtic fiddle subtleties. The combination of music and vocal gymnastics creates an expe-rience in sound that is sure to tickle your musi-cal palate while you tap your toes in unbridled

pleasure. This hurri-cane stew of music, vocals and melody explodes in a style as bitter and sweet as the best IPAs out there today.

On Friday at 10:30 p.m. and Saturday at 8:30 p.m. it’s the Dead Pigeons. The Dead Pigeons are a roots-based Americana band that formed over the course of a five-year residency at Palmer’s Bar, the notorious West Bank institution. This amazing cast of local players emerged and found each other through their love of making music. Drew Peterson (formerly of 40 Watt Bulb) leads the group with his well-known songwriting and gritty vocals. Gretta Hunstiger has been with Drew from the very beginning, perfecting her sound with beautiful and haunting fiddle layering, along with fresh backup vocals. The rest of the supporting cast includes Eric Larson (Sans Souci) on mandolin, Daryn Christenson on percussion, and Adam Lutz (Sans Souci) on bass. The result is a group of dedicated musicians who put on an intimate live show that can be part barn dance/part bar brawl, with a mix of heartfelt, handcrafted bal-lads, foot stomping bluegrass tunes, and the occasional obscure cover.

Hands-On WorkshopsA popular feature of the Minnesota Bluegrass & Old-Time Music Festival is our series of “hands-on” workshops (H.O.W.s). These workshops give folks at all experience levels a chance to bring their instruments and learn new

skills and tunes from expert musicians. Workshops are held on Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on an hourly basis. There are beginner and advanced level workshops—for both bluegrass and old-time string-band style —on guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, and bass.

Each workshop is limited to seven pre-registered participants. Participants must sign up ahead of time at the work-shop tent. Sign-up sheets will be posted at the workshop tent at 9:45 a.m. each day. Advanced level workshops (tent A) are intended for players with several years experience, and beginning level workshops (tent B) are intended for those just starting out. If you are not lucky enough to snag a place or you don’t have an instrument, you are welcome to “audit” the workshop by standing and observing from the back.

Check the website for updates, including specific times and instructors at minnesotabluegrass.org .

The Family Area (Sponsored by Gruber Pallets)

The Family Area has become a festi-val tradition and a home to stage shows, games, contests, and craft projects for folks of all ages.

Activities start at 10 a.m. with kid-friendly crafts, rhythm instrument play, sing-alongs, and, weather per-mitting, a Maypole dance. A highlight of the Family Area is “Pick Up & Play An Instrument” at 10:30 a.m. both Friday and Saturday mornings. This is a hands-on workshop style event and anyone can join in. Our friends from Sloughgrass will help you, and even loan you an instrument to learn a tune on. At 11:30 a.m. you’ll play your tune in the Big Jam with everyone else.

The family-friendly stage shows start around noon each day. On Friday we have The Hula Peppers, One Ukulele,

and a Family Dance with Tim Jenkins. On Saturday it’s The Long Shots, Barton’s Hollow, and Porcupine Creek. Both days will feature a Young People’s Jam led by Tim Jenkins on Friday and Bill Cagley on Saturday. The Wild Goose Chase Cloggers and The Wailing Loons will finish things up on Sunday.

The Family Area Talent Show will be on both Friday and Saturday at 1:30 p.m. One act will be selected each day to do a “tweener” spot on the Main Stage later in the day. And we intend to create various categories for all runners up that high-light their particular talents and foster a positive experience for all participants.

Watch for additional activities to be posted on the board just outside the Family Area. There will be ongoing activities like crafts, painting, and other projects from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday and Saturday, and our joyful clean up at 2 p.m. on Sunday. There will be some kind of treat for everyone to look for-ward to when we’re all done, and one last good song or dance before we all split up for another year. Come join our family.

The Gathering PlaceThe Gathering Place is a great place to meet, mingle, and jam with your friends, old and new. Conveniently located near the Main Stage and food vendors, you’ll find coffee, tea, ice water, and shaded seating. It is a place for folks to gather and get to know one another. All are welcome to stop in, so please come join us. Newcomers to the Minnesota Bluegrass & Old-Time Music Festival are especially welcome!

Pickers, bring your instruments. Throughout the weekend, there will be folks jamming at the Gathering Place, both informal pick-up jams and sched-uled beginning and intermediate jams led by Bill Cagley. These are a great way for beginners to get a taste of playing with others in a jam setting. Bill will introduce all the songs, call out the chords as you go, and generally lead everyone through a great time. (This is a wonderful opportunity for even the pathologically shy person. Bill is easy to follow, it’s a big group so no one’s

listening to you, you won’t be put on the spot, and the group will sound great!)

Bill will host a beginner’s jam, Friday at 11 a.m. and an intermediate level jam at 3 p.m. On Saturday he will lead a young people’s jam in the Family Area at noon and then another beginner’s jam at 3 p.m.

The Bartig Brothers will host uku-lele workshops and a jam session on Saturday. The beginner’s workshop is at 11 a.m. The Bartigs will supply instru-ments for anyone that wants to try one out, and they’ll walk you through a step-by-step process until you can play. The intermediate workshop begins at 1 p.m. Then it will all come together during a ukulele jam session at 5 p.m. in the Marketplace.

The Marketplace (Sponsored by Deering Banjos)

Inside the main concert area you will find our marketplace area and mer-chants alley. We’ll have about a dozen food vendors grouped around our mar-ketplace stage, and almost 20 merchants selling wares along merchant alley (in the back of the concert area). And while you’re eating great food under the shade of the marketplace tent, you can enjoy a little entertainment before and during the breaks in the Main Stage music on our Marketplace Stage.

We’ll be holding our Marketplace Family Fair on Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. This is our new opening event of the festival and will include music, games, prizes, and, of course, food. Many food vendors will already be open for business, and you’ll be right there when the Main Stage show starts at 6:30 p.m. Northern Lights Bluegrass and Sloughgrass will be providing entertainment, so bring the family and

enjoy the first day of the festival in the Marketplace.

There will also be entertainment on the marketplace stage Friday and Saturday mornings and in the afternoons during the Main Stage dinner break. There will be some exciting groups you won’t find on the Main Stage, including One Ukulele, the Dumpy Jug Bumpers, Wailing Loons, Tin Can Gin, and the Hula Peppers. And on Sunday morning you’re all invited to join in a bluegrass gospel music jam session. Check the schedule for exact times.

The list of food vendors in the mar-ketplace is wide ranging. You can start off with mouthwatering, slow roasted BBQ from Doc E’s BBQ. Get it by the sandwich, plate or pound. Or try a Howie Wowie burger, a feature from our newest vendor The Red Food Shack. They are also serving pork sausage on a bun and Italian gelato. Perhaps you would like a good old-fashioned ham-burger, then Sweet Williams would be your stop. They also serve chicken brats, grilled cheese, soup, salad, and wraps, plus pancakes and sausage for breakfast. If pizza is what you desire, then follow your nose to Wild Earth Woodfired Pizza where they will be baking hand-crafted artisan pizza in their wood fired brick oven. B Concessions will be pop-ping up some of the world’s finest kettle corn.

Cool off with a fruit drink, fresh squeezed lemonade, orange or straw-berry treat from Orange Treets. They also have cheese curds, corn dogs, and foot longs. Members of the ROCORI

Band will be staffing The American Dairy Association malt wagon, get a shake and support the local band. Sip of Class serves espresso, lattes, iced drinks, and anything coffee, plus gyros, break-fast sandwiches and muffins. Our host, El Rancho Mañana also has a stand that sells pop, water, chips, candy and ice cream novelties.

In addition to the good food, there are a string of exhibitors and crafts people around the back of the Main Stage concert area. Honnie Ammann has quillows, throws, and hair garlands. Carol & Mike have magnetic jewelry. The Moon Company has clothing, jew-elry, and instruments. And you can even get a massage from Abigail or Mary. Look for more last minute additions to our vendor row.

We also have many musical vendors. Offbeat Violins, Tone Music, Earthway Farm and Crow River Guitars have musical instruments, accessories and supplies for sale.

Of course you’ll want to stop in at our sponsors’ booths: Nechville Banjos and David Vincent Guitars & Mandolins. Look for our new sponsor this year, Juice Plus and The Tower Garden, by The Gathering Place.

Ranch House LiveRanch House Live is a laid-back open mic series held Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings from 8 p.m. to midnight at El Rancho Mañana’s Ranch House, the campground office. The Ranch House offers food and beer with indoor seating and a new outdoor deck with a fireplace and speakers.

Ranch House Live gives you and your friends a chance to perform a few tunes on stage. The emphasis is on friends, fun, and good music, not perfection. The sets will be 30 minutes on the hour and 20 minutes on the half hour, allow-ing for a five-minute emcee and setup time between sets. This odd time format encourages groups that only have a short set list or have never been on stage to just have fun and show us what they’ve got. Several amateur players have gone on to form groups after finding out how much FUN they had at Ranch House Live!

We also use this series to develop additional emcee talent that we can draw upon in the future for our other stages and festivals. This is an important role, as the emcee binds together the entire process, keeping the audience connected and engaged during the band change-overs and keeping the bands within the time slots. We are especially looking for our younger volunteers to get involved as emcees. Mentoring and assistance is provided along with a clipboard of infor-mation and jokes.

Sign up to perform or emcee by going to the Ranch House Live schedule page on the MBOTMA website at min-nesotabluegrass.org. Click on the “Sign Up Now” button on that page to sched-ule a time.

Pre-festival Instructional CampsBluegrass Jam Camp with the High 48s: The members of The High 48s, Eric Christopher (fiddle), Marty Marrone (guitar), Mike Hedding (mandolin), Rich Casey (standup bass), and Anthony Ihrig (banjo), will host a three-day bluegrass instructional jam camp. This camp is for beginners and intermediate level players and will include individual instrument instruction plus group playing and harmony singing dynamics. The camp

will culminate with a short stage presen-tation for all participants on Thursday evening. Tuesday, August 4 (after 6 p.m.) through Thursday, August 6.

Old-Time Band Camp with the Bucking Mules: The members of The Bucking Mules will host a two-day old-time band instructional camp on Wednesday, August 5, and Thursday, August 6.

Joseph Decosimo (fiddle), Luke Richardson (banjo), Meredith McIntosh (bass), and Karen Celia Heil (guitar) will teach intermediate and advanced level old-time musicianship. Students will learn some basics of old-time music as well as a few new tunes. They’ll receive instruction on their individual instru-ments, as well as some experience play-ing with others; all in a relaxed, positive, and inclusive environment. The camp begins at 9 a.m. Wednesday and contin-ues through 6 p.m. Thursday.

What a great way to start a festival weekend! For both camps, classes are limited to 12 students per instructor, so reserve your spot early. For more infor-mation or to register, call 800-635-3037 or email [email protected].

From corn dogs to capuccino, tacos to t-shirts, the Marketplace has everything you’ll need to eat, drink, play and wear at the festival.

You do not have to be a pro to participate in the MBOTMA Minnesota State Fair Duet Contests. If you like to play and sing with others, this is for you. If you like to play instrumen-tal music, like fiddle tunes, with others, this is for you. These contests are meant to be fun for the participants!

The 2015 MBOTMA Minnesota State Fair Duet contests are Roots Style Music contests conducted by the Minnesota Bluegrass & Old-Time Music Association. They will be fun to see, to hear, and play in.How it works: Contestants perform selections in traditional acoustic Old-Time, Bluegrass, Country, or Western Swing roots-style music.Where? West End Market Stage at the Minnesota State Fair. When?Friday, September 4, The Vocal Duet Contest: Two voices and one or two acoustic stringed instruments pres-ent vocal musical performances. Scoring will be based on vocal phrasing, singing and playing in tune, timing, instrumental skills, and presentation. Judges will sit on the audience side of the performing stage.

Entrants will prepare three vocal duet numbers: Two num-bers for the preliminary round, and one number for the cham-pionship round should the entrants be selected as finalists.Saturday, September 5, The Instrumental Duet Contest: Two stringed instruments play together with scoring based on instrumental creativity and phrasing, playing in tune, timing, instrumental skills, and presentation. Judges will sit in the audience.

Entrants will prepare four instrumental duet numbers with no vocals: Two numbers for the preliminary round, and two

for the championship round should the entrants be selected as finalists.Cost? $20 before or $25 after August 15 per pair per contest. Complete details, prizes, rules and registration at www.minne-sotabluegrass.org. The Fine Print: These contests really are all about fun—for the contestants and the audience. If you’re thinking “I’m not good enough.” Or, “I am afraid to get up in front of an audi-ence.” Or, “What if I crash?” Keep in mind that, to the folks watching who don’t play or sing a note, you are a singing and picking star. You’re the only one who notices your “weak moments,” not those around you. So, take a chance and have some real fun working up your numbers for an audience who wishes they were as good as you. Nothing to worry about— Gus and I could be your competition.

“Learning how to express who you are on your chosen instrument is a life-long challenge and ultimately the most satisfying thing you could do for yourself and for those around you. I truly believe this with all my heart.

I can think of nothing better then to share my musical knowledge and experience with others who are struggling with their own journeys of self-expression through music.

Nothing tickles me more then to see that light bulb go on above my student’s head.”

Native Minnesota fiddler and songwriter Becky Buller is coming back to the Midwest for a string of shows at the end of August.

She and the band will start their week-long run on Saturday, August 29 at the Lakes Bluegrass Festival on the Cass County fairgrounds in Pine River, Minnesota. They then head over to the Crooked Lane Farm Folk School in Colfax, North Dakota, for a Sunday afternoon concert on August 30 at 3 p.m. Then it’s down to the Minnesota State Fair in St. Paul for two fun-filled days of butter carving, fried food, ferris wheels, and shows at 8 p.m. each night on the Schell’s Stage, Monday, August 31 and Tuesday, September 1.

Becky will also be making extra spe-cial appearances as a guest soloist with the Minnesota National Guard 34th Infantry Red Bulls Band both Monday and Tuesday at 1 and 2:30 pm at the Leinie Lodge Bandshell. There will be special guests and surprises during each of the Becky Buller Band performances so don’t miss a one of them!

The concerts Minnesota’s legendary 34th Infantry Division “Red Bull” Band will celebrate the service of America’s veterans throughout the decades and focus specifically on the Civil War era in commemoration of the 150th anni-versary of the end of that conflict. Becky will perform fiddle tunes of that time, as well as newer fiddle classics with the Red Bull Band.

“Fiddle music was so prevalent during the Civil War. Her performance with us will make our music so much more authen-tic to the time,” said percussion section leader Sergeant First Class Ryan Lodgaard.

Becky’s album ‘Tween Earth and Sky (October 2014) was the #1 album on the national airplay chart in the March and April 2015 issues of Bluegrass Unlimited magazine (bluegrass-music.com). Her sin-gles “Nothin’ To You” and “Southern Flavor” both made top 10 of the National Airplay Chart in April 2015 at #4 and #7, respec-tively. And Becky was a 2014 nominee for IBMA’s songwriter of the year. Becky’s com-positions have been recorded by Ricky Skaggs (“Music To My Ears”), Rhonda Vincent (“Fishers of Men”), Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver (“Be Living”), Josh Williams (“You Love Me Today”), and Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out (“My Angeline” and “Rest My Weary Feet”).

Officially organized in 1900, the 34th Infantry Division band has proudly served state and nation for over 114 years, seeing service in WWI, WWII and the global war on terrorism. Whether performing for the public, supporting military ceremonies, or entertaining US service members and our allies, the sol-dier-musicians of the Red Bull Band are honored to serve in one of the US Army’s most respected divisions.

As a US Army band, the unit is avail-able upon request to perform concerts, clinics, classes, presentations and joint performances free of charge. Due to the high volume of inquiries, requests are granted on a first come-first served basis. It is recommended to submit booking requests as far in advance as possible; all requests will be considered. Please contact the unit for more infor-mation, (651) 282-4707.— Submitted by Becky Buller and Chief Warrant Officer 2 David J. Stordalen, Bandmaster, 34th Infantry Division “Red Bull” Band

One of—if not “the”—most anticipated albums of the past year was the return of Hot Rize after twenty-odd years with When I’m Free. Since its release in late 2014, the group has embarked upon a popular tour and received a significant amount of airplay with several singles. The album, a twelve-track collection from Ten in Hand Records, is a satis-fying effort, demonstrating that the passing of two decades has done little to dull the band’s embrace of its signature sound.

When I’m Free is a largely original recording, with eight of the twelve songs written or co-written by band members. “Western Skies,” written by bassist Nick Forster and mandolin/fiddle man Tim O’Brien, is an appropriate opening song, recalling the band’s Colorado origins in both its lyrics and its bouncy, toe-tap-ping Rocky Mountain-grass sound. It’s the story of a man trying his hardest to get home to the place he loves the best, and though the setting is a little differ-ent than most bluegrass songs, it’s still a familiar sentiment. “Doggone,” written and sang by Forster, has a fun, bluesy feel, with all of the musicians seemingly fully engaged in what they’re doing. There’s a lot of things going on all at once, but it works. Another number that has excellent instrumentation is Pete Wernick’s instrumental “Sky Rider.” It’s upbeat, with a nice full sound guided by Wernick’s banjo.

O’Brien, who sings lead on the majority of the songs here, has a very distinctive voice that has made him one of the most recognizable male vocalists in bluegrass. His expressive vocals are perhaps used best in his original song “Blue is Fallin’.” It’s a well-written bluesy number with a dark feel, told from the perspective of a man struggling with anger and depression (the “blue” of the song’s title). His phrasing is on point in “Come Away,” a song that finds the singer asking a woman to give their love one more try, with a pleading tone that fits the lyrics well.

The album closer, “Clary Mae,” prob-ably comes the closest to what might be called the “classic” Hot Rize sound (think “Nellie Kane”). An enjoyable song from the pens of O’Brien and the late Harley Allen, it has an easygoing vibe as it shares the story of a young man asking the one he loves to run away with him despite her parents’ misgivings about the relationship. After listening to it a few times, I realized I’d heard it somewhere else previously—David Parmley cut it in 1998 (under the title “Claire May”), with a more country feel.

British guitarist Mark Knopfler’s “I Never Met a One Like You,” a sweet love song, has a pleasant, light sound, sim-ilar to something O’Brien might have recorded on one of his solo projects. It is one of two covers on the album, with the other being Los Lobos’ “Burn it Down,” which has a harsher sound than much of the rest of the album and lead vocals from Forster. There are also two new arrangements of traditional songs–the loping, lonesome “A Cowboy’s Life,” and the excellent, Celtic-flavored instrumen-tal “Glory in the Meeting House.” The latter features some instrument swap-ping, as well, with Forster picking up the mandolin and guitarist Bryan Sutton (whose work throughout the album is, as always, tasteful and solid) playing clawhammer banjo.

Though Hot Rize never truly left the bluegrass scene, with a number of mini-tours and reunion concerts over the years, When I’m Free is their first all-new recording since 1990’s Take it Home. I’m sure that after hearing this record, fans both old and new are hoping they don’t wait quite as long for their next album.

For more information on Hot Rize, visit their website at www.hotrize.com. Their new album can be purchased from a variety of online music retailers.— From bluegrasstoday.com

Bluegrass Saturday MorningBy Phil Nusbaum

The August FestivalWhen I first started playing bluegrass music, there were several key experiences that inspired me. Frequently, these were blue-grass festivals I’d go to. In 1971, I took off from my substitute teaching job to drive across the country to Bill Monroe’s festival in Bean Blossom, Indiana. I saw many of my first generation heroes at the event. But the group that really grabbed me was the Bluegrass Alliance, a group of 20-ish players who possessed a new direction for bluegrass. A short time after the festival the group morphed into the Newgrass Revival. Both the Alliance and the Revival had fresh approaches combining rock music and folk revival influences with bluegrass at what seemed then a deep level.

At our August festival in 2015, I’m hoping to listen to Balsam Range. It’s not only their great ensemble playing I’m looking forward to, but listen to a Balsam Range CD and you hear great original writing. I keep thinking of the group’s song “Somebody Else’s Dream,” which sums up well the experience of working for “somebody else.” Plus, they sometimes play the unexpected. A few CDs ago, Balsam Range but their spin on an old Elmore James blues number, “One Way Out.” Balsam Range is a group, like Minnesota’s Monroe Crossing, that handles all its own music business affairs. Put it all together, and this is a group to inspire others.

Hot Rize is also playing the festival in this August. It seems that the group has been around forever. But this is no tired-out ensemble. Their show at the Cedar Cultural Center about six months ago was fresh and exciting. In short, the guys never played it better. Hats off to them.

But if you would like to catch one of the brightest lights of bluegrass of the last 50+ years, Eddie and Martha Adcock and Tom Gray will be appearing. Over the years, Eddie has gotten a lot of attention for the unique style of banjo playing he showcased with the Country Gentlemen, and Tom Gray played with the group for many years. Movie Scores? Eddie and Tom and the Gentlemen did them. Folk songs? Yup. Jazz tunes? You bet. And of course they performed and recorded a lot of hard driving bluegrass songs. A few years after leaving the Country Gentlemen, Eddie married Martha, and the two of them have been playing and singing across the country ever since. More than five years ago, I interviewed Eddie at a World of Bluegrass event. Also, I’ve heard recent records and gotten reports that he is still pickin’ great.

I’m looking forward to the August festival. No doubt it’ll make great memories for all who attend.

If you’ve ever wanted to see and learn the history of the banjo – complete with historic instruments – don’t miss an educational traveling exhibit, assem-bled by banjo builder Bob Thornburg of Bishop, California, coming to the August Festival. The display features era-accu-rate replicas of early banjos and traces the development of the instrument from its African roots to the New World.

Banjos eventually were mass-pro-duced in American factories, but the early instruments are as diverse in materials as they are in character. This outstanding collection of 23 instruments spans a period of over 300 years and illustrates the amazing history of this popular instrument.

The BANJOS—Africa to the New World display booth will be located just north of the Gathering Place on the walk to the main stage and will be open during daylight hours. Check the festival schedule for times for Bob’s formal pre-sentation and demonstration.

If you’d like to learn more about Bob Thornburg, watch Craig Evans’ Banjo Builders segment from the “Conversations with North American Banjo Builders” series on Smithsonian Folkways, available for a limited time at https://vimeo.com/39357947.

Festival Committee WorkshopThe MBOTMA board of directors will host a workshop for Festival Committee volunteers, on October 7, 6–7:30 p.m., that will cover the following topics:• Membership sales and marketing• Volunteer recruitment, training and

recognition• Over-all MBOTMA budget• Festival budgets

The workshop sessions will be fol-lowed by the monthly board meeting. MBOTMA board members will be in attendance at this workshop and you’re encouraged to stay for the board meeting.

If you’ve spent even five minutes with me, you know that I feel that volunteers are the heart of any organization and that MBOTMA volunteers are certainly the heart of everything that we do for the members and others who love our music.

A successful volunteer system works best if the members are informed and equipped to do the jobs that are so important to our world of bluegrass. And volunteers need an opportunity to share their ideas and concerns with each other and with those who set policy. So this is your chance to learn and to share.

In order to choose the most appro-priate venue for this combined workshop and meeting, please RSVP to [email protected]. Please put “October volunteer workshop” in the subject line of your email, and it will be forwarded to me. Indicate how many from your group will be attending and any questions that you may have.

Your presence is needed to make this workshop productive and I’m looking forward to sharing time and ideas with you.—Marilyn Bergum, Director at Large
