Project: Newmont Batu HijauLocation: Sumbawa, Indonesia Project narrative: Diesel fuel, Fluid Cleanliness Management (FCM) site services

Pall Corporation has worked closely with Newmont Nusa Tenggara (NNT) since 2002. The mineoperates a fleet of 111 haul trucks and 50 other heavy equipment-diesel fueled machines aroundthe clock, with a 250-500 hour scheduled maintenance interval. The diesel distribution network andremote location of the mine means that the fuel is handled by many intermediaries, which providesopportunities for contaminant ingress. Contaminated fuel can cause the on-board fuel filters to blockbefore the scheduled maintenance intervals, resulting in a loss of power, slower haul times, lowerproduction rates and often costly unscheduled downtime. Contaminated fuel can also result in premature fuel injector and fuel pump failure, with potentially very high repair costs for parts, laborand downtime.

Pall Corporation designed, supplied and commissioned a bulk fuel filtration system for the mine toprotect the entire fleet against any upstream fuel contamination. All fuel to the haul trucks and mining equipment is consistently polished to ISO 18/14/10 cleanliness. Since the installation of thePall Ultipleat® Diesel fuel filtration system, the mine has operated without any disruption to machinery productivity. This has occurred despite a number of major upstream fuel problems thatwere detected and corrected by the Pall equipment (in the early days over 6kg of contaminationwere removed in a single day!)

NNT has also engaged Pall Corporation for other Fluid Cleanliness Management solutions includingfilters and air breathers for bulk oil tank farms, remote lube storage and dispensing systems, filtercarts, portable oil systems, heavy equipment refueling and lube service trucks, and 'on board' applications on mining equipment. Pall also provided FCM training of site personnel, FCM auditingand reporting procedures, and design assistance for existing and new applications.

Project: Barrick Cowal GoldLocation: Lake Cowal, AustraliaProject Narrative: Cone Crusher Lubricant Filtration Retrofit

Pall Corporation has worked closely with Barrick Cowal maintenance personnel since the constructionphase began in 2005 and has been asked to consult on numerous applications. We encountered a particularly challenging application on Sandvik pebble crushers where the severe operating environmentcaused high contaminant ingression into the crusher lubricant.

Analysis of lubricant cleanliness shortly after commissioning of the crushers proved this to be the case.The lubricant samples showed consistent, high contamination levels (ISO 22/18).

After consultation with Barrick reliability personnel, we recommended installing long-life (high filtrationarea) Pall Ultipleat® SRT UR699-40” filters in the main circuit where they would see full system flow.The Pall filters displaced the OEM supplied filtration system. In addition, the Pall filters included differential pressure indicators that interfaced with the OEM control / alarm panel / PLC and providednotification of when the filters needed to be serviced.

Installation of the Ultipleat SRT UR699 series filters significantly improved crusher lubricant cleanlinesswhile achieving longer service life than the OEM filters. There was a 128 times reduction in particles >5 microns and a 64 times reduction in particles >15 microns (from ISO 22/18 to ISO 15/12). This notonly extended fluid life, but also reduced filtration cost and yielded a significant reduction in oil replacement. As a result, equipment availability and productivity was markedly improved.

Project: Joy Mining MachineryLocation: South AfricaProject Narrative: Hydraulics – continuous miner bolters

Designing continuous miner bolters for underground coal mining presents many unique challenges.Joy Mining Machinery decided to simplify the hydraulic circuits of its miner bolters as much as possible by using integrated manifolds to combine many individual parts into one common body. Joy wanted the filtration for these circuits to follow the same philosophy.

Pall Corporation worked with Joy to incorporate Ultipleat® SRT filtration technology into a number ofdifferent filter manifolds for pressure, return, bypass and non-bypass applications, with two or threefilters on each manifold block. The manifolds have upstream and downstream tappings to allowremote filter blockage indicators to be installed in any location. The Ultipleat SRT filters significantlyimproved the hydraulic oil cleanliness. There was a 16 times reduction in particles >5 microns andan 8 times reduction in particles >15 microns (from ISO 18/15 to ISO 14/12). This cleaner oil canextend hydraulic component life as much as 3x and helps protect against fluid-related warrantyclaims. The Ultipleat SRT elements also lasted about twice as long as the previous filters and cut theannual cost of filtration nearly in half. These benefits also allow the owner of the machine to enjoyincreased availability and productivity.

Pall Corporation also works with Joy in the USA, UK, and Australia to help achieve consistent minesite fluid cleanliness and reduce warranty claims for mining, coal handling, and longwall machinery.

Project: Newcrest Cadia Ridgeway MinesLocation: Australia, NSWProject Narrative: Lubrication on crushers and grinding mills

Newcrest is Australia's largest gold producer and one of the world's lowest cost gold producers. TheCadia Ridgeway mine has one of the world’s largest SAG mills in a processing plant operating at 17 million tons per annum (Mtpa). SAG and ball mills with up to 20MW drives are also on site, with gyratoryand cone crushers for both surface and underground ore processing.

Pall was engaged from the plant design stage to design fluid contamination control into the lube andhydraulic systems. Crusher lube systems have full-flow 185 GPM duplex pressure filters to allow uninterrupted operation while changing out blocked filters. Grinding mills have full flow high pressure filters to protect flow dividers and trunnion bearings and high flow / high volume kidney loop filters to polish the oil. All lube systems are fitted with water sensors in the return oil pipes to allow immediatedetection of any water ingress. Any water entering the oil system is removed with a mobile Pall vacuumdehydration oil purifier that is shared between the mills and crushers.

In the processing plant’s 12 years of operation, the mine has never had any failures or damage related tocontaminated lube oils, despite the inherently severe operating conditions and seal failures that are common on such machines. Mill trunnion bearing, gearboxes and motor bearings oil systems are maintained at ISO 14/12 cleanliness.

Other Newcrest operations at Telfer in WA and Hidden Valley in PNG use Pall Fluid CleanlinessManagement (FCM) to ensure the integrity of the fluids which are the lifeblood of their mission criticalmachinery.

Project: Alaska Gold CompanyLocation: Nome, AlaskaProject Narrative: Water treatment – treatment of coal mine pit water

In 2007 Pall Corporation supplied two Pall Aria™ AP-4 skidded microfiltration (MF) systems toAlaska Gold Company located in Nome, Alaska to treat pit dewatering water containing arsenic concentrations above 170 ppb. Total flow was 800 gpm.

Tetra Tech was the engineering company responsible for the design and construction of the plant.Tetra Tech conducted on-site bench scale testing and, with Pall process engineers, determined anoptimal dosing treatment process for both arsenic and antimony removal.

The full-scale treatment plant utilizes pretreatment with ozone and primary settling in two plate clarifiers followed by the two Pall Aria AP-4 microfiltration skids in parallel.

The remote aspects of Nome, Alaska led to challenging construction conditions. Tanks and all pipingover 4000 linear feet were heat traced and insulated. The water treatment plant was successfullyintegrated into the mine process through a common SCADA system.
