Militarization in Western Mindanao

•  26%  of  the  total  land  area  of  Region  XI  (SMR)  is  covered  by  mining  applicaGons,  totaling  597,  292.90  has.  

•  Large-­‐scale  mining  operaGons  resulted  in  the  loss  of  livelihood  for  40,000  small-­‐scale  miners  in  Pantukan  in  2010.

Advocates  against  big  mining,  plantaGons,  and  other  extracGve  projects,  as  well  as  teachers  and  students,  have  been  lodged  with  fabricated  criminal  suits.  They  are  facing  threats  to  their  lives.  Several  of  those  who  find  their  names  in  the  AFP’s  “order  of  baKle  hit  list”  have  become  vicGms  of  summary  execuGons.

Indigenous  community  schools  in  Mindanao  have  been  targeted  for  closure,  encampment,  vilifica7on,  and  harassments.  These  schools  have  been  ini7ated  by  Lumad  community  organiza7ons,  with  assistance  from  non-­‐government  organiza7ons  and  support  groups,  in  response  to  the  need  to  address  high  illiteracy  rates  in  rural  areas.
