mini mermaid running club
DESCRIPTION
Mini Mermaid Running Club (MMRC) stands for self worth, value and equity. We are changing the lives of girls and young women by shifting their internal experience and the way they interact with the world around them. MMRC participants train for a local 5K race through a structured program that meets bi-weekly for six weeks. Each team consists of 10 girls & 1 coach, having a consistent small group gives the girls an opportunity to be heard, work alongside others & provides a female mentor, either a teacher or community member, for them to look up to. On a typical team practice day, the girls participate in a lesson/discussion based on original content/curriculum provided in customized coaches handbooks; play a fun and physical game that helps to reinforce the lesson; participate in a team workout designed to help them train for the 5K; and end the day with a journal entry and reflection time.TRANSCRIPT
Mini Mermaid Running Club a 501c3 est. 2009, is a unique running club for girls and young women having served over 3500 girls
worldwide since its creation.
Our mission is to teach
every girl to lead a healthy
life by listening to her
inner voice, valuing her
uniqueness, learning to
love movement AND
discovering the finish line
is JUST the beginning!
MMRC is addressing a number of social issues facing our young girls by creating a solid foundation for change, success and sustainability. Our theory of change addresses both
larger social issues and the immediate and very real experience of young girls.
Mini Mermaid Running Club begins in elementary school BEFORE girls reach the peak
ages when self-esteem begins to wane, teaching the principles of self worth repeatedly
so Mini Mermaids can head into their teenage years with confidence and the tools
necessary to stand strong.

With programming
throughout the US and in 6
countries, we see a retention
rate over the six week program of
greater than 95% for both the
girls and our volunteer coaches
who are primarily teachers.
Our program and curriculum are
designed to create and support
outcomes for girls in three
primary social problem areas:
health (obesity/diabetes
reduction), poverty (increased
graduation rates/increased
resiliency) and bullying(increased confidence/self-worth).

LEGS
Our emotions influence how we react to situations and how we
feel about ourselves, our friends and our families. Learning tools to talk to
ourselves the way we would to a friend (with compassion)
helps us see clearly where we want to go in life.
What we see and hear from
media, our friends, our families
and our leaders
helps shape our minds, our
opinions of ourselves
and, in turn, our decisions
Serving others makes us the
women / girls we want to be.
Every Mini Mermaid regardless
of where she lives creates and
implements a community
service project with her team
Our feet lead us where we
want to go and carry us all
the way to reach our goals!
"One step at a time, gets me to
the FINISH LINE!" THE FINISH
LINE IS JUST THE
BEGINNING!
Our legs are our strength.
Their power gives us the
ability to go farther than we
ever thought possible. Each
of us have different
strengths, we can teach other
AND we can learn from
others.
Be your own Healthy
Hero. Smart choices lead
to strong bodies. Food is
the fuel we need to live
the life we want.
The program includes:
*Twelve- 1.5hr training sessions
*Mini Mermaid T-Shirt
*Coaches supplies and training
*Journal for each Mini Mermaid
*Entrance into a local 5k
In addition to funding from grants/foundations and donations to provide our program to girls worldwide,
MMRC is proud to have a ONE4ONE model that creates an opportunity for ALL girls, regardless of their
financial situation to participate in MMRC. We have three different pay models to ensure the sustainability
of our program, schools or communities all fall into one of these categories, regardless of the pay model
and NO girl is EVER turned away for lack of funds:
● Schools/Communities with greater than 65% of their population at or below the poverty line receive
our programming at no cost. These funds come through grant, donations and our One4One.
● Schools/Communities with between 51% and 64% of their student population at or below the
poverty line, pay $75 per girl. (These funds can come from the girls or through fundraising)
● Schools/Communities with 50% or less of its students at or below the poverty line, pay $150 per
girl. This $150 fee which we call our One4One model allows for another girl at one of our no cost
sites to participate in MMRC.
*Through sponsorships and grants, MMRC is able to fund all of our sponsored schools regardless of
whether we receive ONE4ONE funding.
