HGI-CGS performs geoscientific research related to mineral deposit research, assessment and mineral exploration. The results of this work are used by various

stakeholders to aid their exploration programs and to promote mineral exploration, and as a database for land use planning.

The geoscientific expertise is given on all types of mineral occurrences throughout Croatia. The work is financed with funds of the Croatian Ministry of Science,

Education and Sport through the project: ”Mineral Resource Map of Croatia to the scale of 1:200 000”.

HGI-CGS conducts the geochemical investigations in order to determine the concentration and distribution of chemical elements (especially PHES) in

different media (soil, stream and floodplain sediments, water and contami-nated land). The compiled geochemical datasets are the basis for detailed

environmental impact studies.

Participation in international projects: • Geochemical Atlas of Europe (FOREGS) • Geochemical Atlas of Agricultural Soils and Grazing Lands (GEMAS – EGS) • Urban geochemistry (URGE - EGS)

Resource identification and evaluation:The geologists identify potential industrial mineral resources at both regional and local scale and integrate the data in land-use planning GIS at different scales with a focus on the 21 Croatian counties. The methodologies used allow future access and supply of high quality mineral resources.

Provision of expertise to existing operators:The department’s geologists give expert advice to existing industrial mineralsproducers, with problems related to both the geological characteristics of their deposit as well as quantities (reserves) and quality mined mineral raw materials.

Environmental impact assessment related to mineral extraction:Before granting development consent for mining, the operators need carry out a procedure known as environmental impact assessment (EIA) in order to determine any significant effects on the environment as a consequence of mineral extraction activities.

Hydrogeological explorations in the Croatian Geological Survey have been conducted within the Basic Hydrogeological Map of Croatia (OHGK) project which is funded by the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports.

Engineering geological (EG) activities in the Department of hydrogeologyand engineering geology are:• Production of Basic engineering geological map of the Republic of Croatia, scale 1:100.000, their accompanying Explanatory Notes, as well as the EG date base;• Defining of EG properties of terrains, EG rock mass classifications and noting exogenetic processes needed for the design and construction of infrastructural objects in karst area;• Production of EG maps as fundaments for spatial planning and environment protection.

Production of the OHGK requires a significant amount of data, like those considering the definition of hydrogeological parameters of aquifers, groundwater flow through the aquifers, groundwater dynam-ics, physical and chemical composi-tion of groundwater, and a complex relation of fresh and salt water in the coastal area of karstic underground. The principal aim of the Geothermal Map of Croatia (GTK), which is also funded by the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports, is to obtain a complete picture of Croatia’s geothermal characteristics which include defining the magnitudes and the location of geothermal

anomalies and gather the data of all geothermal phenomena.

The researchers have participated in many projects contracted with direct clients also. Most researches have been for the delineation of the sanitary protection zones for drinking water sources, defining groundwater resources for the water supply, implementation of Water Framework Directive EU and solving many others hydrogeological prob-lems (hydrogeological researches for the needs of constructing HPP, drainage of the roads, study of the environmental impacts for different purposes).

Geological mapping is conducted, in Department of geology, primarily

for the purpose of Basicgeological map of Croatia 1:50.000.

Geologic map is in its concept a the-matic, and in its content a lithostrati-

graphic map respectively.

Methodological procedure includes geological mapping and preliminary

works, which consist of recording and laboratory processing of refe-rence sections, as well as defining

lithostratigraphic units.

Because of the diversity of geologi-cal structure of Croatia (carbonate

platform, Dinarides, Pannonian Basin), geological mapping is

carried out according to the geo-logical specifics of each region.

Therefore, the mapping results can be compared and integrated into the results of geological research in the wider area of Croatia.

Geological maps are the basis for the engineering-geological and hydro-geological maps, and a necessary prerequisite for the construction of civil engineering and mining facilities, spatial planning, etc.The explanatory notes for
