DIRECTORY OF LIME PLANTS IN THE UNITED STATES IN 2005

At the end of 2005, there were 87 lime plants operating in the United States. In addition, there were 50 hydrating plants, which included 38 collocated with operating lime plants. Two plants were removed from the previous year’s list of operational plants—Carmeuse Lime’s Hanover plant in Pennsylvania and Riverton Corp.’s Riverton plant in Virginia. National Lime & Stone Co.’s Carey plant in Ohio is listed, but the company announced late in 2005 that the plant was closing. One idle plant—Vessel Mineral Product Co.’s Bonne Terre plant in Missouri—restarted operations in 2004 and has been added to the current directory.

Data for 2005 were unavailable at the time of publication; the top 10 plants (descending order of production) in 2004 were: 1. Ste. Genevieve plant of Mississippi Lime Co. in Ste. Genevieve County, MO; 2. Maysville plant of Carmeuse Lime in Mason County, KY; 3. Black River plant of Carmeuse Lime in Pendleton County, KY; 4. Ste. Genevieve plant of Chemical Lime Co. in Ste. Genevieve County, MO; 5. Longview plant of Carmeuse Lime in Shelby County, AL; 6. Woodville plant of Martin Marietta Magnesia Specialties LLC in Sandusky County, OH; 7. Buffington plant of Carmeuse Lime in Lake County, IN; 8. Clifton plant of Chemical Lime in Bosque County, TX; 9. Pilot Peak plant of Graymont Western U.S. Inc. in Elko County, NV; and 10. Montevallo and Alabaster plants of Chemical Lime Co. in Shelby County, AL, (data for these two plants are reported together). Table 1 lists lime companies and lime plants in the United States organized by State and identifies the type of lime produced at each plant. Symbols used in table 1 and numbered footnotes are located at the end of the table (p. 9). Table 2 lists lime companies in alphabetical order and provides information on the type of kilns used at each plant and whether the plant mines or purchases its kiln feed. Symbols used in table 2 are located at the end of the table (p. 13). Figure 1 (p. 14) is a map that shows the numbered general location of each plant (excluding stand-alone hydrating plants) and identifies whether it is captive or commercial. The plant name and company affiliation are identified by a corresponding number in the legend (p. 15).
