<ul><li> 1. I think most of my peers have a xed mindset, mainlybecause we are in an environment like where the message sent is that we are all smart because we go here. Also i feel like there is an entitlement some students feellike they have. For example a student in my math class doesnot take notes because he feels like he is smart enough, and can do it without the help of the teacher.Thursday, September 8, 2011 </li> <li> 2. I think most people have a xed mindset. If youre smart at Westminster, people are more likely to treat you differently. Smart people tend to get asked for help a lotmore than less smart people, and there are smart people who try to make sure their "reputation" stays untarnished through anything. I know a person that will say things like "Oh, I didnt study," or "I slept through more than half ofthat test," if he ever gets below a 95 on any test or quiz, or *thinks* that he will get less than a 95 on anything. Especially in math, I think a lot of kids have a xed mindset. When they dont understand something they shut down. It could be explained very carefully how to do the problem in several different ways,but some friends wouldnt grasp the concept because they dont want to. Its not because theyre too dumb, itsbecause they think theyre too dumb and dont want to put in the effort of learning. Others, however, are open to teaching. They arent able to let go of something until they have learned it, which is good. I think most of my peers at have a xed mindset. At everyone feels pressure and competition todo well in athletics and in school, most people arent willingto try new things or risk a failure because they think it will be the end of the world. In some classes you have more chances to do well than people realize so they think each individual task you have to get a 100 on and do the same thing youve been doing, without taking risks.Thursday, September 8, 2011 </li> <li> 7. I think that they mostly have xed unfortunately. Many times I hear people stating that they do not want to do their homework. I think that my friends have a combination of both mindsets. My friends are willing to learn and want to see how things are true. They want to ask questions to deepen their understanding. At the same time, my friends are scared to do bad, for fear it might impact something. My friends hate failing or doing something that is not up to their own or their parents expectations. Recently, my friends got back their intro to political thought and speech papers. While they were comfortable sharing what they got because they knew we would only provide support, some did not do as well as they would have liked. This lead to my friends going to ofce hours to understand where they went wrong and what they could improve on.Thursday, September 8, 2011 </li> <li> 11. The people that I choose to spend my time with have almost extreme cases of growth mindset. I feel like that with them, i am encouraged to have a growth mindsetbecause their success is so great. A great many of this close circle achieved Suma Cum Laude last year; though I did not, I was encouraged by their merits and strive to do better this year.Thursday, September 8, 2011 </li> <li> 12. I think that a lot of my friends at have a growthmindset, because a lot of them will get angry at themselves if they do bad on a test, but then try to change the thing that caused them to fail so that theyll succeed the next time. I say this because they typically work hard and study hard to getter better grades/ get better at sports, music, etc. My friend was sharing time for the quarterback spot last year at the beginning of the season, but he practiced hard all year, and by the end of the year, he was starting outright.Thursday, September 8, 2011 </li> <li> 15. Basically, this means that throughout ones whole life, one must be a student. One must realize that the brain is a muscle and thatexercising it will allow it to expand and improve. Only from really using ones brain can one master skills and concepts, but if one works hardenough, one can master anything. A xed mindset is the exact oppositeof this, and it comes from believing that everyone is born good at some things and bad at others. Having a xed mindset allows one to believe that one cannot change what one is good or bad at, cannot gain newskills or improve on old ones. People with growth mindsets believe that no one is born with talents and knowledge, rather it is acquired, while people with xed mindsets think that everyone is born with skills and strengths and theyd just better live with them.Thursday, September 8, 2011 </li> <li> 19. Most of my friends have a "xed" mindset, saying that they cant do something or that they think they are no good at something, however, some of my friends have a "growth" mindset, saying that there is always room to improve or thinking that they can do anything they put there mind to.Thursday, September 8, 2011 </li> <li> 20. Some days I have a growth mindset and some days I have a xed mindset. The other day I was giving myself a very hard time about math by saying "I dont think Ishould do honors math because I am not smart enough." I was feeling overwhelmed withthe concepts and that I got a 50% on a quiz. I undervalued my ability to learn math during those terrible low moments. On the other hand, after getting a 70% on a spanish quiz, I went home and studied very hard for the next spanish quiz. This extra effort allowed me to learn the material better than I had learned it for the previous quiz. The failure fueled my future success. One more example relates to my math class last year. After checking every homework assignment I would right tips on how to x mistakes that I had made in that specic homework. These tips coupled with redoing incorrect math problems created a wonderful study guide for every math test. My mistakes showed me how to improve my mathematic skills.Thursday, September 8, 2011 </li> <li> 21. I think most of my peers have a "xed" mindset. This isbecause many of them get scared when they run into things that they dont understand. They dont enjoy being challenged by their work and would rather it all be easy. For the most part we all know that we can grow and improve with practice. I know that the transfer in 6th to 7th grade regular math to honors was very difcult forpeople. Most of us failed our rst tests! However, over therst semester I watched myself and my peers grow, change, and improve. We took advantage of back work and asked plenty of questions. Whenever something seems too hard, they get help to learn it, and keep trying until they understand. One example of this would be during a free period I was doing homework with some of my friends, and one of them wasreally confused with their math homework.
