Mindfulness
What is it?● Mindfulness is paying attention..
○ On purpose,○ And without judgment
● We can be mindful of our senses, and of our inner world of thoughts and emotions.○ It helps us to respond, not react.○ It is simple. But it is not often easy.
What are the benefits?● Improved attention, focus, and concentration● Reduced stress (ability to calm down when upset)● Increased self-awareness (ability to recognize
emotions)● Improved impulse control● Increased empathy (for self and others)
Why mindfulness?● We’re checking in with our internal and external
experience – becoming aware of the activity of the mind, and how we interact with the environment around us
● We’re learning how to enjoy our everyday experiences.● We’re learning how to “be with” an experience, how to
respond instead of reacting
Why mindfulness?● Teaches that thoughts are thoughts, not facts.● Teaches to just be aware instead of judging.● Teaches self compassion as well as compassion to
experience and others.● Breaks harmful thinking patterns which lead to
depression and other mental illnesses
What mindfulness is NOT:“Thinking about nothing.”
- It is being aware of our thoughts.
What mindfulness is NOT:“Zoning out.”
- It’s zoning IN. It is purposeful awareness.
What mindfulness is NOT:“Being happy ALL THE TIME and loving EVERY SINGLE MINUTE of life.
- It’s bringing non-judgmental awareness to the present moment.
Ways to be more mindful:● Mindful breathing ● Mindful listening● Mindful walking● Taking in your surroundings and your current situations● Mindful moments throughout the day (where is my
attention?)● Mindful yoga●
