Bukidnon trembles anewMALAYBALAY City -- Another quake rocked Maramag town, this province, at 3:08 a.m., February 10. Mr. Marcial Labininay, North-ern Mindanao director of the Philippine Institute of Volcanol-ogy and Seismology (Phivolcs), said the tremor was recorded at magnitude 3.8 with Intensity II. He said the quake’s epicenter was 7.72 km north, 125 km east, 4 km south and 23 km west of Maramag, Bukidnon. “Actually, a series of 3 quakes rocked the area at 3:08 a.m., 3:33 a.m. and 3:46 a.m. But only one of these, the 3:08 am shaking, was felt,” Labininay said. Phivolcs reported the latest tremor in Bukidnon occurred at 1:01 p.m. of February 5 recorded at Intensity II with 3.2 magnitude in Maramag and Intensity I in Don Carlos. Its epicenter was 7.84 km north, 124.27 km east, 9 km south and 32 km west of Maramag. “Today’s quake was tectonic in origin and was very shallow. There were no damages recorded,” Labininay said. He also explained that “In-tensity” is determined on the strength of shaking produced by the earthquake at a certain loca-tion. the joint admin order of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and Department of Telecom-

munications (DOTC).A P2,000 worth of com-

pensation must be given to the passenger for every 24-hour delay and/or refund

of checked baggage fees, if the baggage was not deliv-ered within 24 hours from the arrival of the flight, as stated in the bill.

Further, if the baggage is lost or has suffered any damage, passengers of do-mestic flights have the right to half of the amount in the relevant convention (for international flights) in its peso equivalent.

If after seven days the passenger or consignee still has not received the baggage and it is not delivered, then

it is presumed lost, the bill further emphasizes.

Should there be death or bodily injury of any air passenger, compensation must be provided.

Among the modes in which these payments will be made is via check, cash or document necessary to claim the compensation or benefits.

SP engages in salary loan programTHE city government of Cagayan de Oro is availing of the salary loan program of the Philippine Veterans Bank (PVB) for the local officials and employees. This, as the City Coun-cil enacted an ordinance authorizing Mayor Vicente Y. Emano to sign a Memo-randum of Agreement (MOA) with PVB for such

purpose. The MOA states, “quali-fied employees can avail of a maximum of three month’s gross pay at a fixed interest rate of 11 percent per annum.” The legislation was en-dorsed by the City Council committee on laws and rules. (with report from The Power/asf )

Initiated by the Associa-tion of Science Educators in the Philippines (ASEP), in cooperation with the Department of Education (DepEd), the NSQ aimed to promote academic excel-lence and create camaraderie and sportsmanship among students, pupils and coaches. Activities of the NSQ are focused on the theme: “Science and Technology Advancement for Creat-ing Quality Environment-Friendly in Improving Pro-ductivity Prospects,” said Rebonfamil R. Baguio, OCS Division Superintendent. However it was until 1950’s that taekwondo was standardized and organized by Gen Choi Hong Hi and the sport was brought outside Korean border,at first to Vietnam and U>S> and later to the rest of the world. Today taekwondo is organized in the tree dimen-sional federations: The world Taekwondo Federation(WTF) based in Korea, the International Taekwondo Federation(ITF) based in Austria and the Global Taekwondo Federation (GTF) based in Korea. Taekwondo has been officially declared recently as an official Olympic Sport with first competitions held held during the Olympic games in Sydney, Australia in 2000. Nowadays people have adopted and join the training regardless of age,size or athletic activity. They found out and prove the following benefits: 1. Help control juvenile delin-quency-studies have shown that it lessens aggression,lessens anxiety,increases self es-t e e m , i n c r e a s e s s o c i a l adroitness(improve social skills) 2 . D e m a n d s s e l f discipline,mental concentration and alertness. Correct technical execution of techniques requires rhythm, timing,power,proper form and proper breathing. To achieve this,students must develop self-discipline and stay focused and ignore distractions. 3.Taekwondo provides educational experience-stu-dents learn about their abili-ties and limitations and how to deal their limitations.Students learn to relate with people of

all ages from various socio - economic,ethnic,cultural and racial backgrounds through their training in taekwondo.Hence they are required to teach once they are in the higher belt as part of their training. 4. It promotes health and physical condition. When a per-son exercises,the heart pumps into the body which then be circulated into the body cells and tissues for nourishment. In turn, a person becomes active and can perform even beyond what the body can normally do.Studies also showed that taekwondo training increase bone density,which may pre-vent bone loss and it can be improved by constant jumping.Studies proved that children who jumps 5 or 3 times a day had a significant increase in bone density.So doing jumping jacks as part of their exercises,they are getting stronger and perfect-ing the techniques and they are also helping prevent bone loss in the later years of their lives. 5 . L e a d e r s h i p v a l u e s - t aekwondo i s no t on l y kicking,punching and counter attacking to overcome the op-ponents. It is most acquiring values of taekwondo that can be used in leading taekwondo as an organization. 6.Improves social interac-tions.Students become more entusiastic,optimistic and self-reliant.They overcome tensions and shyness. 7.Self defense-It is the most important benefit in taekwondo.Selfdefense is not just using defenses and counter attacks against the attackers.It is also the ability to prevent injury to oneself or others from attack-

ers.This includes learning to fall safely,to communicate with aggressors and to escape from violent situations. Self defense is not just concern with physical dealing with violence,it is most concern with avoiding becoming a victim of violence. 8.It is also a means to an end in terms of professional carrier - most likely, taekwondo practi-tioners oftentimes achieve their career compared to those who are not.The value of discipline gained in taekwondo training can be applied in their study habit and in pursuing a career.Some may become an active members of a varsity team as a college scholar and become free from school obligations or have a discount, and may be possibly chosen as a model or a professional members of the Philippine Taekwondo team

Conclusions/Recommendations: With all the above,it is rather but reasonable to consider some of the recommendations: 1.Taekwondo training will be incorporated with leader-ship values to enhance one’s self-confidence and self worth.It could be adopted as part of a regular activity of the Sanggunian ng mga Kabataan sa barangay or generally in a higher level. 2. Due to the psychological value of taekwondo. it is indeed necessary to coordinate with the school officials to incorporate Taekwondo program in MAPE in the elementary, secondary as well as tertiary level. 3. Encourage children from all ages to join taekwondo training to spare them from drugs,alcohol and other form of vices.

Phonological awareness refers to the ability to attend to sounds of language as distinct from its meaning. Studies of both alphabetic languages show that phonological awareness is highly correlated with reading ability. For alphabetic languages, pho-nemic awareness is especially important because the letters of the alphabet map into individual sound units (Phonemes). Children who are able to attend t the indi-vidual phonemes in alphabetic languages are much more likely to learn the alphabetic principle (How letters map on phonemes) and, therefore, learn to recog-nize printed words quickly and accurately.

For alphabetic languages, many studies have shown that phonemic awareness is closely associated with reading ability in the early and later years of school-ing. Furthermore, reading instruc-tion and phonological awareness helps children to discover the alphabetic principle. At the same time, learning to read alphabetic script also develops phonological and phonemic awareness.

Practical classroom appli-cation:.Phonics is based on the systematic teaching of sound and letter of relationships as well as sound and spelling patterns. This is helpful in beginning English reading instruction. Children who have learned to read prior to formal schooling do not need such instruction. Older readers do not benefit as much from phonics instruction..Teaching student to identify phonemes with or without te use of letters is effective.. Teachers can develop students’ phonological skills through a wide variety of activi-ties. Rhymes, alliteration (words which start with the same sounds) and poetry can be used to draw children’s attention to individual sounds in language.Teachers can focus on in-dividual syllables and sounds in language in the context book reading It does not have to be taught in total separation from other reading activities. THIS coming February, classical music lovers will be privileged to hear well-loved pieces performed live under the baton of one young Cebuano conductor – Professor Reynaldo Abellana. Professor Abellana was one of the first scholars of the Salvador and Pilar Sala Foundation Incor-porated (SPSFI). Under the aegis of SPSFI, he had the rare opportunity to be trained in Japan on Suzuki Method. He later became a part of the Cebu Youth Symphony Orchestra Development Program (which eventually became the

In 2001, he graduated from the University of Southern Philip-pines with a degree in Bachelor of Arts Major in Music. Later that year, he joined the San Miguel Philharmonic Orchestra. He also became a member of Manila Philharmonic Orchestra. While in Manila, he continued his violin lessons under Professor Gonzalo

Estrada and Eliazar Bautista. In 2002, he resigned from SMPO and pursued a career as a violin-ist in Cruise Ships under Rosario Strings. After nine years with Rosario Strings, he completed his last contract and decided to establish a land-based career back in Cebu. He opened up the Classic Orchestra Music Studio in May with the desire to bring quality teaching and to continue the music legacy of the Battig Music School where he started.
