NPA disarms guards of a vice guv candidate

MISAMIS ORIENTAL – Seven fully armed members of suspected New People’s Army rebel disarmed the farm guards of a gubernatorial candidate here Thursday morning.

Wen Militante, a Liberal Party candidate for vice governor in Misamis Oriental, reported that the armed men carted away two issued shotguns of the blue guards assigned in a family-owned coconut farm in Binakalan, Gingoog City.

He said his family hired blue guards to keep watch on their

15-hectare coconut farm due to rampant thieves in the area.

Militante said that the farm is located some 5 kilometers southwest of Gingoog outskirts. The raid on his coco farm was first to occur despite the guards and tenants as-signed in the area received threats many times in the past, he added.

BUTUAN City - Caraga representatives to the Lower House are support-ing the proposed mod-ernization of Caraga Regional Hospital in Surigao City.

According to the DOH-CHD Caraga Regional Di-rector Ariel I Valencia, all the nine lawmakers of the region have already signed

the letter of endorsement. The facility is envi-

sioned to become a teach-ing and training hospital at par with notable hospitals in the country, serving the region and the neighbor-ing areas, especially the poorest of the poor.

A three-year develop-ment plan for this purpose will cost P500 million.

Potential fund source are the revenues from the sin taxes.

It was after World War II that the Philippine Con-gress appropriated for the construction of a 25 bed provincial hospital in the province of Surigao del Norte.

With the increasing number of admissions

and the new trends in hospit a l management and treatment, in Febru-ary 11, 1997, by virtue of R.A. 8255, the Surigao Provincial Hospital was converted into Caraga Regional Hospital with an authorized bed capacity of 150.

Today, Caraga Regional Hospital is the core referral

hospital in the region even serving the neighboring provinces of Leyte.

However, with the in-creasing demand for qual-ity care, as mandated by the Aquino Health Agenda through Kalusugan Pan-gkalahatan, it is immi-nent that Caraga Regional Hospital must expand its services, fully equip its

facilities, and build the capacities of the health worker to better serve the community.

In addition, Director Valencia will present this proposal to the Regional Development Council-Social Development Com-mittee for further endorse-ment. (DOH-CHD 13/PIA-Caraga/asf )

CAMP Rodriguez, Butuan City - Justice was instantly served to a victim of a shooting incident in Brgy Taglatawan, Bayugan City afternoon of February 12, this year.

The victim, Alex Go Burdeos, 50 years old, was shot-dead by his perpe-trator identified as Obar Calimbanan, with a caliber 9mm along Durian Street of said city.

Bayugan City Police Station revealed that Bur-deos was riding on his red motorcycle along Durian Street when Calimbanan, also riding on a red mo-torcycle, arrived and shot Burdeos in the face killing him instantly.

In response to the in-cident, the police chased Calimbanan, but upon reaching Brgy Osmeña, he accidentally collided head-on with a black FUSO Wing.

Dragged 31 meters from the point of impact, Calim-banan sustained fatal inju-ries and died on-the-spot.

Police Chief Inspector Florence M. Andit of the

Agusan del Sur Crime Labo-ratory conducted scene of the crime operation at the first crime scene where they recovered two fired cartridges.

Recovered at the sec-ond crime scene, where Calimbanan died, was a 9mm Para Ordnance pistol, a magazine loaded with five ammunition, two live 9mm ammo inside the pocket of the suspect’s jacket, one magazine loaded with three live 9mm ammo, and one heat sealed transparent plastic sachet containing white crystalline substance believed to be shabu from the U-box of Calimbanan’s motorcycle.

Vehicles are now tem-porarily impounded at Ba-yugan City Police Station, while Dionril R. Salvan, driver of the FUSO van, was placed under the custody of Bayugan City Police Station, with the vehicle.

The remains of Burdoes and Calimbanan now lie in-state at the Mata Funeral Parlor in Bayugan City. (PAPM/MMG/arjaysfeli-cilda)

ST. CHRISTINE, LIANGA, Surigao del Sur – Four days before Valentines day, on February 10 this year, the 29th Infantry Battalion, in coor-dination with the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Surigao del Sur Chapter, has initiated a bloodletting activity, dubbed as “Dugo Ko, Buhay Mo”.

Headed by the battalion commander, Lt. Col. Virgilio F. Luna, the activity was held at the battalion headquarters, participated in by people from the barangays of St. Christine and Diatagon, both of Lianga town.

The donors from the battal-

ion and the civilian community came to the venue as early as 8:00 o’clock in the morning.

As blood out flowing to-wards the blood bags, the spirit of voluntarism was so high with hopes that each drop of blood will add hours, days, months and even years to the lives of those in need.

The activity ended the same day, but the spirit of volun-tarism will continue within the hearts of the MATATAG troopers and also from the concerned individuals of the Municipality of Lianga and in the Province of Surigao del Sur. (SPM/asf)

KORONADAL City - - -"Development can only be institu-tionalized, if there is a signed comprehensive compact that creates a new relation between us (MILF) and the central government," said MILF chair Al Haj Murad Ebrahim.

Comprehensive GPH-MILF agreement, key to dev't - MILF chair

By Shahana Joy E. Duerme

Chair Murad was with President Benigno Aquino III during the launching of the Sajahatra Bangsamoro Program at the Bangsamoro Leadership and Manage-ment Institute (BLMI) in Barangay Simuay, Sultan Kudarat town Maguindanao.

BLMI is situated about four kilometers from the MILF Headquarters in Camp Darapanan.

Chair Murad empha-sized that peace can only be achieved once development is truly assured.

“Development is only effective when it is people-centered, when it is deter-mined, and undertaken by its ultimate beneficiaries and when it empowers

people,” he said. “It should not depend on

the kind of President who sits in power,” he noted.

Meanwhile, the chair acknowledged President Aquino for his effort in personally launching several socio-economic projects for the Bangsamoro com-munities.

Sajahatra Bangsamoro Program is a socio-econom-ic initiative of the national government that aims to uplift the health, livelihood, and education conditions of Bangsamoro communities.

It will be implemented through an inter-agency mechanism, including Phil-Health for the the provision of health insurance, De-

partment of Health for the upgrading of community-based health services, as well as Commission on Higher Education and Technical Education and Skills Devel-opment Authority for the provision of scholarships and technical-vocational trainings.

The Department of Education will also come in to provide assistance to madaris (Islamic schools) and private schools while the Department of Social Welfare and Development will assist through its Con-ditional Cash Transfer and Food-for-Work Program.

The Department of Agriculture and the De-partment of Public Works

and Highways and other government agencies are also expected to implement programs and projects in these communities.

In his speech, Murad also thanked the Japanese government for funding the construction of the BLMI which will host workshops and trainings to capacitate the Bangsamoro people as part of the Sajahatra

Bangsamoro Program “It is a unique testament

of our resolve to transition as it will be an avenue to acquire new sets of skills necessary for the gover-nance of our people,” Murad described BLMI.

The building which stands at Barangay Simuay, Sultan Kudarat, Maguin-danao is the result of the towering commitment of

partnership between the Philippine government and the MILF and an edifice of shared hope and vision for the people.

On the other hand, Chairman Ebrahim en-couraged everyone to help in achieving peace so that together everyone can move with confidence towards development. (SJD-PIA12/asf)

KORONADAL City - May-or Peter B. Miguel has announced the possible transfer of Police Regional Office (PRO-12) headquar-ters to this city.

The announcement was made by him in a meeting with PNP Director General Alan Purisima during the turn-over of command to newly-installed PRO-12 Regional Director Charles Turalba Calima.

It has been noted that former President Gloria Ma-capagal Arroyo has declared the City of Koronadal, as the regional political and socio-economic center of SOCCSKSARGEN, through Executive Order no. 304.

The PNP Chief has

pledged to transfer the PRO-12 headquarters to the city and personally asked Mayor Miguel to help facilitate the process, particularly in looking for a land with an area of more or less 15 hectares for the purpose.

According to Mayor Miguel, the transfer is a manifestation of the agen-cy’s confidence in the city, more so that the pronounce-ment was made by their highest ranking official.

He assured the PNP of the city government’s prompt response to the request and looked for-ward to more Regional Line Agencies (RLAs) to relocate to the city.

To date, out of the 44 RLAs, 40 offices including bureaus have fully trans-ferred and 11 have satellite offices in the city.

Meanwhile, in an inter-view with PC/Supt. Calima during his courtesy visit to the city last January 29, he said that the PNP Chief has instructed him to finalize the details the soonest pos-sible time, especially that their office has already the budget for the purpose.

He added that the exist-ing PRO-12 headquarters in Tambler, General Santos City will serve, as a training center should the move to relocate their office in the city shall have been realized. (ABS/asf)

PRO-12 Transfers to Koronadal By Airyn B. Sucion

KORONADAL C ity - Saylola Abdulmuin, 53, Monday, fulfilled a very special wish that is to be able shake hands with the President of the Republic of the Philippines.

Abdulmain, who is a resident of Zamboanga Sibugay province, was among the first beneficiaries for livelihood component of the Sajahatra Bangsamoro Program that President Be-nigno Aquino III, launched in Barangay Simuay, Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao, Monday.

"The Sajahatra Bangsam-oro is a great help not only for my family but for the Bangsamoro communities," Abdulmuin said.

“I am thankful that the government is providing us with chances to earn income that could help families build brighter future,” he added.

For Guiamelin Ebrahim, 17, a student from Buluan town Maguindanao, Saja-hatra is an “opportunity for poor students and young people and me to pursue and finish our studies.”

With a scholarship, she said further, the income that her father earns from working as a laborer at the banana plantation of the La Frutera Inc. in their area could be used to other

beneficial purposes for their family.

But for Abdulrahim Mama, 37, who described himself as “an unemployed person despite completing two master’s degree,” the Sajahatra Bangsamoro is a proof of the sincerity of the Aquino administration to achieve lasting peace in Mindanao.

“Considering the de-cades of conflict in Mindan-ao, I’ve have never expected that a President of the Phil-ippine would ever come to our place and personally bring services needed to uplift Bangsamoro com-munities,” Mama said.

President Aquino is the first president of the Phil-ippines to have set foot in MILF stronghold.

Barangay Simuay, where the Bangsamoro Leadership and Management Insti-tute (BLMI) -- venue of the Sajahatra Bangsamoro Program launching -- is only four kilometers from Camp Darapanan, main headquarters of the MILF.

At the launching, Presi-dential Adviser on the Peace Process Sec. Teresita Quin-tos-Deles explained that the Bangsamoro Sajahatra is a concrete socio- economic initiative of the Philippine government that aims to uplift the health, livelihood

and education conditions of Bangsamoro communities.”

It will be implemented through an inter-agency mechanism, including Phil-Health for the provision of health insurance, De-partment of Health for the upgrading of community-based health services, as well as Commission on Higher Education and Technical Education and Skills Devel-opment Authority for the provision of scholarships and technical-vocational trainings.

The Department of Education will also come in to provide assistance to madaris (Islamic schools) and private schools.

The Department of So-cial Welfare and Develop-ment will assist through its Conditional Cash Transfer and Food-for-Work Pro-gram.

DSWD Sec. Corazon “Dinky” Soliman said they are being assisted by the MILF leaders in the identi-fication and assessment of possible programs and proj-ects immediately needed by the target Bangsamoro communities.

She added that at least 100,000 families could benefit from the Sajaha-tra Bangsamoro Program. (DED/SJDuerme-PIA12/asf)

LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “…`Do you see all these things?’ (Jesus Christ) asked. `Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down’…” (Matthew 24:2, the Holy Bible).

-ooo-READER’S REACTION

ON ISAIAH WARNING: One of our readers closely following this column sent me a text message to say that our citation of Isaiah 23:19 seems erroneous, be-cause there are only 18---not 19---verses in Isaiah 23. I apologize for this error, and it must have been ty-pographically prompted by our rush to beat the deadline for that particular column.

The proper citation is Isaiah 29:13. Jesus Christ, our God and Savior, re-peated that admonition of Isaiah in Matthew 15:8 and Mark 7:6. Again, I apologize. Isaiah 29:13 says in full: “The Lord says: `These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their

hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is based on merely human rules they have been taught’…”

Matthew 15:8 says: “ ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me’…” Mark 7:6, on the other hand, says: “He replied, ̀ Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written: ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me’…” The question therefore is this: do we, as believers, honor God with our hearts, or merely with our lips?

-ooo-METEORITE RUSSIA

EXPLOSION: SIGN OF THE TIMES: Was the mete-orite that exploded in Che-

lyabinsk in Central Russia and which hurt more than a thousand people a sign of some sort? My answer is yes, it is a sign. First, it is a sign that meteorites and meteors, and other heavenly debris, really have the power to hit earth, and cause untold death and destruction. Second, it is a sign that Biblical prophecies are coming true.

Right off, I can think of two Biblical prophecies about meteorites and me-teors and other heavenly debris hitting earth, in the form of stars falling from the sky. The first is found in Luke 21:25, where Jesus Christ, talking about indica-tions that the world is about to end, says: “…`There will

be signs in the sun, moon and stars’…”

The second is found in Matthew 24:29, where Jesus says: “…`Immediately after the distress of those days the sun will be dark-ened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken’…” Judging from the photos and video footages of what hit Chelyabinsk, the meteorite looked like a star falling from the sky. Now, take note: only one meteor hit Chelyabinsk, and yet the Bible says there will be “stars” (plural, or more than one) that will fall from the sky.

RECENTLY, I attended the silver jubilee celebration of my class at the UERMMMC. It was great to be seeing classmates and friends after 25 years.

Most of us stayed the same in terms of physique, appearance and being kikay and magulo. But, what was amazing during the 1 week celebration were our golden Jubilarians.

They were our mentors then and are still active in their practices as well as in teaching the new generation of upcoming doctors.

It brings that nostalgic feeling and that gratitude of how they were able to impact our lives as students and as practitioners.

To hear them sing,

The art of graceful aging

dance and have fun, belies their chronological ages. They have aged gracefully I should say. Knowing that our golden Jubilarians must be in their 70’sand may even be approaching 80”s, they have reached that fabulous period of their lives.

There is no way that we can stop the changes of time. As one embarks this period in one’s life, the challenges

are likewise great. This is the time when one is faced with health issues and financial concerns.

The most common age related diseases include the Big C ( lungs, breast, colorectal to name a few ), chronic ailments like hyper-tension, Diabetes mellitus, arthritis and Osteoporosis.

Brain and neural prob-lems manifesting as Demen-

tia, Alzheimers, or Parkin-sons are real concerns. Not forgetting Heart attacks, stroke and even depression.

Add to the short list of possible health issues that the aging person may have, is the fear of being alone and losing one’s independence. If one were to focus on these, then, entering that golden period in one’s life, would truly look bleak and frightening.

But, there is what we do call as the art of aging in a graceful manner. I am not talking of one’s capacity to stay looking young. Though it is quite of a compliment to be hearing comments on how one has maintained that youthful look! Which must

ECONOMIC and financial education has always been an important component of the Bangko Sentral’s goal of developing an inclusive financial system that can ultimately empower the different segments of our society.

In line with this advo-cacy, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas just recently pub-lished the “Special Banking Laws Annotated” to educate and enlighten academicians, bankers, and the public on the provisions of various special banking laws.

This book, researched and written by an illustri-ous group of more than 30 lawyers of the BSP’s Office of the General Counsel and Legal Services or OGCLS, is the latest addition to the series on the country’s bank-ing laws. OGCLS is headed

by Deputy Governor Juan de Zuniga, Jr.

The first book entitled, “The New Central Bank Act Annotated,” was launched in July 2010, while the second book, “The General Bank-ing Law Annotated,” was launched in August 2011.

The “Special Banking Laws Annotated,” or the so-called Book III, provides authoritative vantage points and commentaries on spe-cial banking laws such as the Thrift Banks Act, Rural Banks Act, Special Provi-

sions on Cooperative Banks from the Cooperative Code, Non-Stock Savings and Loan Associations Act, Philippine Deposit Insurance Cor-poration Charter, Secrecy of Bank Deposits Law, Foreign Currency Deposits Act, Truth in Lending Act, Usury Law, and Unclaimed Balances Law.

In the book’s foreword, Ret. Chief Justice Reynato S. Puno said he was not aware of any central bank authority in the world that has undertaken the intellec-

tual endeavor of coming out with the “Special Banking Laws Annotated.”

“But more than path-breaking, its impact in our expanding economy will be immeasurable,” Puno pointed out.

For one, the retired chief justice said, the book gives the public easy access to the country’s scattered laws on banking—available only to those with special interest on the subject.

“This lack of access by the people is crucial for it drives away many of them from patronizing the ser-vices of banks which are the primary engines of our economic growth,” Puno said,

He added, “The annota-tions are reader-friendly and guaranteed to remove

THERE are more road networks now in Mindanao, driving more economic opportunities for the rural people especially farmers.

Lealyn A. Ramos, Program director of the Department of Ag-riculture’s (DA) Mindanao Rural Development Program (MRDP) said the program has completed a total of 489.10 kilometer farm-to-market (FMR) roads amount-ing to P995.23 million, among other projects under the rural infrastructure (RI) component.

“As the completed FMR mea-suring a total length of close to 500 kilometers and constructing

over 800 kilometers more we are not just creating a network of community linkages but also generating jobs and other op-portunities in many rural areas,” Ramos said.

In the program’s report during the recently conducted World Bank review mission in Davao, the rural infrastructure compo-nent reflected that 71% of its 495 subprojects were FMRs; while communal irrigation projects account for 14%; potable water systems, 8%; bridges, 6%; and postharvest facilities mostly solar dryers and warehouses only 1%.

“These roads stimulates agri-cultural production by providing access to markets. It also facilitates in the transition from subsistence farming to market-oriented pro-duction, which we expect as we scale-up famers in the value-chain of various commodities,” said Ramos, who is also the regional executive director of DA office in Northern Mindanao.

Roads, Ramos added, also in-crease rural non-farm enterprise and even creates off-farm income thus providing further economic even employment opportunities.

She said that for a long time,

Mindanao badly needs roads that link communities especially the remote places to town centers, and the partnership of the local government units and the program has created impressive impact to respond this problem.

Ramos added the infrastruc-ture projects have benefitted over 400,000 farmers who for the lon-gest time had to endure bad road conditions and inaccessibility.

“Despite all these, we under-stand more still needs to be done. The output of our partnership with the local government units and the DA regional field units

as forefront of implementation are a little achievement for the bigger need of better and more road networks,” she said.

These roads have also improved the rapid and easy access of the residents to hospitals, increased attendance of children at school and enhanced the LGUs delivery of social services.

“Some LGUs testified that with better roads they could actually conduct office caravans in remote areas where all the divisions of the LGU go from barangay to barangay," Ramos said. (Sherwin B. Manual/DAMRDP)

MARAMAG, Bukidnon, PIA) -- Three barangays of Maramag municipality, this province, bagged the 2012 Green Banner Award during the regional nutri-tion awarding ceremony recently held in Cagayan de Oro City. The three barangays namely Danggawan, North Poblacion, and Panalsalan, topped due to the effective and efficient implementa-tion of its Barangay Plan of Action for Nutrition. Mayor Alicia P. Resus said this is the first in history that Maramag barangays excelled in the regional competi-tion in terms of nutrition program implementation. “We are very thankful to our constituents and the

Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) who were along the way, making this honor a reality,” the mayor said. Regional Nutrition Pro-gram Coordinator, Zenaida Tondares explained that the barangay green banner award is an initiative of the regional nutrition commit-tee in recognition to best performing barangays. It was based on the result of the monitoring and evalu-ation of barangay nutrition programs conducted by the inter-agency regional evaluation team. “It is evidence-based evaluation, weighing up its plan and reports, validated by actual visit to projects and interviews with various stakeholders,” Tondares said. The evaluation is con-ducted by actual weighing

of at least 10 percent of the preschool children to validate improvement in the nutritional status. This is based on the pro-tocol developed by National Nutrition Council (NNC), which have been adopted by the local government units nationwide. Catalina Estrada, mu-nicipal nutrition action officer, meanwhile, said the Municipal Nutrition Council, chaired by mayor Resus, stepped up its efforts by initiating partnerships with the NNC and private institutions for joint feed-ing and other health and nutrition services to reach out to poor households in remote villages and upland areas. School Teachers attend International SeminarBy GiNA A. misiONA

The strong determination to acquire more knowledge in mak-ing action researches had driven many school teachers from various schools in Caraga Region to at-tend the rare globally-organized seminar in Butuan City. This was the “International Seminar on Educational Research” hosted by Southeast Asian Institute of Edu-cational Training Incorporated last February 15-17, 2013 at Balanghai Hotel and Convention Center (BHCC), Butuan City. The seminar had a theme entitled “Teaching and Writing Research towards a Globally Competitive Education” and it was open to any teachers in our region either working in public or private schools who were interested to learn additional know-how in writing “Action Research”. and children, anti-vio-lence against women, pro-tection of children in the workplace, juvenile justice system and the two versions of the Senior Citizens Act (2003 and 2010).

As chairperson of the House Committee on High-er & Technical Education in 2004 to 2010 or in the 14th Congress, Villar authored and led the passage of 28 bills promoting access to quality education nation-wide. Among these, the University of the Philip-pines (UP) Charter of 2008 and the Philippine Normal University (PNU) Modern-ization Act of 2009.

She also backed ad-vanced systems of educa-tion such as the ladderized approach, distance learning and open-university system.

“These systems give poor and working students the opportunity to continue their studies until they earn a college diploma,” said Villar.

While “Sipag at Tiyaga” (industry and patience) are very important to conquer poverty, “Misis Hanep Bu-hay” noted that having a college degree is also equally important to succeed in life. “Sipag at Tiyaga” has been the campaign slogan of her husband, Senator Manny Villar whose term ends in 2013. He served as Speaker of the House and Senate President.

Being a classroom teacher for almost eight years, I have already experienced a lot of headaches and setbacks call-ing for a PTA meeting. However my experiences and personal researches have made me dis-cover some guidelines on how to improve the attendance of parents during PTA meeting. Here are they:1. Send letter of invitation to

the parents or2. Write the letter of the meet-

ing on the board and let your pupils copy the con-tent of the letter in their notebook.

3. Remind the parents about the meeting personally.

4. Try to involve the PTA Of-ficers in disseminating the information.

5. Give the officers particu-larly the PTA president the chance to run the meeting.

6. Star t the meet ing as

scheduled regardless of the number of parents al-ready present.

7. Be specific of the agenda.8. Discourage the mentality

of parents that meetings are called solely for the purpose of collecting con-tribution or donation to finance a school project. A PTA meeting is conducted in such a way that individual parent could be given the chance to air his views in discussions called for such a purpose.

9. Serve a snack. 10. Give due recognition to

the active parents in the PTA meetings by means of awarding plaque or certifi-cate of appreciation during closing exercises.

The above guidelines have already been tried by the writer and proven very effective in conducting PTA meeting.

“AVces supports ARAW NG PAGBAsA”

By GiNA A. misiONA Last November 27, 2012 Tuesday at 9:00 to 10:00 in the morning, Alviola Village Central Elementary School (AVCES) si-multaneously conducted Araw ng Pagbasa (Day of Reading) in support of the Ten-Point Basic Education Agenda of the Aquino administration and the institu-tionalization of the “Every Child a Reader Program” (ECARP). This celebration promotes read-ing and literacy among pupils

and students in both public and private schools. AVCES Teachers organized varied activities such as; story-telling, silent and oral reading, verse choir, poem and declama-tion contest using Ninoy’s famous speeches. They also used different reading materials like interesting stories from books and charts. The said activity was spear-headed by the school Principal, Mrs. Susan A. Encarguez.

Similarly, Italpinas’ has been “Highly Commended” internationally in the Best Condo Development (Phil-ippines)” category by the prestigious South East Asia Property Awards (SEAPA 2011) awards based in Sin-gapore.

Earlier, its business plan for Primavera Residences was cited as one of the most promising clean energy in-vestment opportunities in the Philippines during the CTI-PFAN Philippines Clean Energy Investor Forum held at the EDSA Shangri-la Hotel in Manila on June 21, 2010.

The Private Financing Advisory Network (PFAN) is a multilateral, public-private partnership initiated by the Climate Technology Initia-tive (CTI) in cooperation with the UNFCCC Expert Group on Technology Trans-fer. PFAN operates to bridge the gap between investments and clean energy businesses. CTI-PFAN noted that Prima-vera Residences eco-friendly design has a remarkable degree of social and environ-mental stewardship, with a high potential to scale-up, an excellent management team and cutting edge technology.

For 2013, CTI-PFAN again cited Italpinas’ new project as the only finalist from the Philippines for this year’s selection which covered 38 eco-friendly projects all over Asia.

Primavera Residences is the first green building in Cagayan de Oro City which integrated into its design eco-friendly features such as generating part of its electric-ity with rooftop solar panels and reducing power usage by maximizing natural light and wind ventilation.

Located at the Pueblo de Oro Business Park in Uptown Cagayan de Oro City within the master-planned 360 hect-are Pueblo de Oro Town-ship, Primavera Residences is a P450-million 10 storey

twin-tower condominium designed by award-winning Italian Architect Romolo V. Nati and developed by Italpi-nas, a Sustaining Corporate Member of the Philippines Green Building Council.

The Primavera Residences Tower 2 will provide 167 residential units to serve young urban professionals, families of Overseas Fili-pino Workers, Balikbayans, expatriates and everyone yearning for a better quality of life. Construction is in full swing and is scheduled for completion by June 2013.

Aging...from page 6

be why these days people have taken in the hype on keeping one’s appearance as youthful as it can get.

One’s attitude is a deter-mining factor on how one would embrace this new period in one’s life. Know-ing that you are not alone, and that not everyone is even blest to have entered this period should keep you upbeat and optimistic.

By accepting the inevi-table, you now learn to find meaningful activities. Find that which excites you, be it learning something new like playing the flute or the piano, gardening, reading or baking, or taking that much deserved travel that you kept postponing.

It is to one’s advantage, that, instead of going into retirement, one finds some-thing to do or work on, as this keeps you alive and upbeat each day.

Since to age well is not

just about looking young, one’s goal then should be to have that optimum health. To achieve this, one must start with the essentials like eating well.

Nutrition is very im-portant in keeping one’s bodily functions as well as help in the prevention of age related diseases.

One’s dietary choices will impact on how fast or how delayed the onset of aging can be. The earlier you start in your choice of healthy diet the greater the benefit you will have.

Exercise is as important as diet. By keeping active, the muscles are strength-ened, thereby improving balance, and it also improves the cardiovascular health.

Since it is never true that one’s mental ability decreases with growing old, it is to your advantage as you age, to keep the mind active and sharp. Like our muscles, our brain will also shrink with misuse! And, yes, always try to look well: the signs of aging should not disturb nor make you less conscious on how you look.

One’s attitude and out-look determines one’s re-sponse to a given circum-stance. To enter the golden years is to be viewed with optimism: for one has so much wisdom and maturity to share to the younger generation....

the scales of ignorance from the eyes of the un-knowing.”

BSP Governor Amando M. Tetangco, Jr. shared that the book’s discussions pro-moted understanding not only of the laws that govern particular banking institu-tions and consumer rights, but also of their policy im-plications and operational context.

“To us, the completion of our three legal books constitutes a major step forward in our continuing program to promote under-standing of banking laws and regulations not only among banks, government institutions, business, legal practitioners and the aca-deme, but also among bank customers and the public in general,” Tetangco said.

With this week’s launch of “Special Banking Laws Annotated,” I am one with the BSP officials and the book’s editorial board in hoping that this legal book project will promote bet-ter comprehension of, and hopefully better compliance with, banking laws and regulations among all sec-tors of our society.

Just like the raison d’être in the publication of my book, “Central Banking for Every Juan and Maria,” I believe that proper knowl-edge and understanding of our banking laws play an indispensable role in build-ing a strong and vibrant Philippine economy which will provide a better life for all Filipinos.

---Note: My book “Central

Banking for Every Juan and Maria” is now avail-able at the following Fully Booked outlets: Bonifacio Global City, Rockwell and Katipunan Avenue. Also at Power Books, Alabang Town Center.

of Sulu and North Bor-neo, this incident could plunge the two countries in an armed conflict that could trigger the involvement of other countries as well.

All it takes for a deadly firefight to erupt between the Filipino followers of the Sultanate and Malaysian law enforcement troops is a single miscalculation. Before this happens, it would do well for the Philippines and Malaysia to immediately convene some sort of a joint council that will find ways to ease the tension now building up in Sabah, and to solve the long-running claim of the Sultanate over Sabah or North Borneo.

As I see it, this matter should already be submitted to an international tribu-nal, with the Philippines, Malaysia and the Sultanate participating. It is better to seek a peaceful solution through arbitration, rather than allow relations with Malaysia to deteriorate into a shooting war, which can be taken advantage of by other interested by-standers.

prospects in 2013-if no new economic disturbances arise.

Jason Chiang, company senior manager, said they are cautiously optimistic about global economic growth this year following positive developments in the U.S. and Europe. He noted that the U.S. fiscal cliff has been postponed, and there appears to be a housing sector resurgence in North America.

“The recovery is under-way, though fragile and sus-ceptible to external shocks,” he added.

In Europe, the euro zone crisis has been contained, al-though the region is unlikely to drive global recovery this year, he said.

Instead, trade drivers have centered on Asia-a trend expected to contin-ue this year, with regional countries as exporters and the developed world as their customers, Chiang said.

For 2013, Drewry es-timates global container port traffic to grow by 5%, up from 4.1% in 2012. Asia is expected to register a higher growth rate-7.6% for the Far East from 6.7% the previous year, and 5.2% for Southeast Asia, from 4.2% in 2012.

Northern Europe, mean-while, is seen to post a 2.8% growth for the year from 0.7% in 2012, and North America will book an es-timated annual increase of 3.1% compared to 2.2% in 2012.

Drewry also predicts the average container port throughput growth for 2011 to 2017, placing it at 5.8%. He believes that after a growth rate of 5% this year, expansion in 2014 would rise to 6.2% before register-ing modest growths of just 6.4% for 2015, and 6.5% for both 2016 and 2017.

On a regional basis, he forecasts a lower-than-world-average growth for Northern Europe and Northern America of 2.3% and 4.4%, respectively, for 2011 to 2017.

Far East Asia and South-east Asia are projected to have annual increases of above-global-average of 7.2% and 5.7%, respectively, for the same period.

By 2017, Chiang antici-pates that the FEA and SEA regions will have reached their port capacities, and will need to make infra-structure investments to accommodate the rise in volumes. -- Mel Ascutia, PHILEXPORT News and Features

TRAVEL ADVISORYRich culture and tradition define events and festivities

in the Philippines as well. Different local festivities, life-style, art, songs and dances may create an icon depicting Filipino celebrations, celebrations that are translated to festivals that bring more fun in the Philippines.

One of the major cultural attractions in the country is the province of Bukidnon, where seven (7) ethnic tribes reside, namely, the Manobos, Bukidnons, Talaandigs, Higaonons, Umayamnons, Tigwahanons and Matigsalug tribes. Aside from its being a natural paradise, Bukidnon is blessed with these people who treasure distinct practices and traditions, where artistry and inimitable songs and dances attract spectators to the celebration. The colourful and intricate dress designs of the tribes are manifest of Bukidnon’s artistry and creativity. The graceful dances inspired by animal and bird movements and inspirational songs of maternal love, love for nature and even courtship remind us of our values and patriotism for our mother land, love for family and old customs.

One of the municipalities of the province of Bukidnon celebrates a festival showcasing the lifestyle of the Manobo tribe that they term “Sunggod Ta Kamanga”. This is a Grand Thanksgiving Celebration of the Manobo Tribes of the municipality of Quezon, Bukidnon which started in 2009. It is about a “traditional ethnic ritual” held prior any land preparations and other farming activities participated by the dominant ethnic clans from the 22 barangays of this municipality namely: Manobo-Pulangihon (those liv-ing near Pulangi river) & Matigsalog (those living in the highlands). This is celebrated in a grand scale through varied presentations of different tribal rituals, songs and dances and the popular ethnic sports of the said tribes.

The Department of Tourism Region 10 is proud to an-nounce one of the biggest celebrations of ethnic culture and traditions in the region, the “Sunggod Ta Kamanga 2013” in Quezon, Bukidnon, which will start on February 17, 2013 up to February 19, 2013. A series of activities are lined up for the celebration and will be highlighted by the street dancing and tableau competition, Paratuan Ritual (Installation & Recognition of New Ethnic Leader), Padtungan Ta Kasal Ritual (A Tribal Wedding Ceremony), Search for “Laga Ta Kiokong 2013”and Traditional Ethnic Sports participated by all the tribes of Bukidnon.

in the province organized by Project Development Officers of SLP, in coor-dination with Pantawid Pamilya field workers. Under the livelihood program, beneficiaries are allowed to get loans ranging from P5,000 to P10,00 for their livelihood projects, Atty. Araceli F. Solamillo, DSWD Field Office 10 Regional Direc-tor, said. These loans, which are community-based that do not bear any interest and do not need any collateral,

are payable in one year so that others can also bor-row under the same set of arrangements, Solamillo said. In Kapatagan town, the 57 SKAs with 1,035 mem-bers received P5,772,000 while the 41 SKAs with 865 members in Lala were granted P4,442,000. The Pantawid Pamilya beneficiaries of the in-terior municipalities of-Nunungan, Salvador, and Sapad received P400,000; P1,330,000, and P875,000, respectively.

Meanwhile, Sultan Naga Dimaporo town benefi-ciaries with 50 SKAs have P5,704,000 for their seed capital loan. These beneficiaries, ac-cording to their project proposal, will be engag-ing in different types of livelihood projects such as handicraft making, hog fattening, cooking, buy-and-sell, among others. The SKA members are all Pantawid Pamilya Set 1 grantees. Aside from the 4P beneficiaries, qualified

to borrow are those listed in the National Housing Targeting System (NHTS), Solamillo added. To ensure the success of the SLP, a five-component program that starts with a partnership-building with the community, local government units have been developed by DSWD.
