Change in the Brains of Taxi Drivers
Correlation of volume change with time as a taxi driver.

• TAXI-DRIVERS: A structural change in a key brain region in London taxi drivers that is related to navigation and working memory.
• MATHEMATICIANS: Time spent as a mathematician induces increased gray matter density in the parietal cortex of mathematicians.
• GOLFERS: Changes can be seen in the golfer’s brain. Larger grey matter volumes in particular brain structures were found in the skilled golfers compared to the other two groups.
• BASKETBALL PLAYERS: Experience-dependent plasticity is detectable in the brains of basketball players.
• MUSICIANS: Brain structures differ between musicians and non-musicians, related to learning and not a predisposition to music.
Plasticity: Repeated Behaviours
‘Thinking is… Movement Confined to the Brain’
• PIANO PLAYING: Over 5 days, as subjects learned the one-handed, five-finger exercise through daily 2-h manual practice sessions, the cortical motor areas targeting the digits enlarged, and their activation threshold decreased....
•JUGGLING: Structural changes occurred within 7 days of beginning training. Learning of a new task is pivotal in changing the structure of the brain rather than ongoing practice of something already learned.
• EXAM PREPARATION: Preparation for the German “Physikum” basic medical exam. Structural changes related to learning in the hippocampus, par hippocampal gray matter and posterior parietal cortex.
• LEARNING A LANGUAGE: Learning a second language increases the density of grey matter. The changes observed are correlated with skill level.
Plasticity: Effects of Training

Connections Give Ever Deeper MEANING over Time…
The Biological Basis of the MindIs the Personalisation of the Brain
Through Unique Dynamic ConfigurationsOf Neuronal Connections, Driven by
unique Experiences
‘From the moment we become aware of others, we demand to be told stories that allow us to make sense of the world, to
inhabit the mind of someone else. In old age we tell stories to make small museums of memory. It matters not whether the
stories are true or imaginary.
The narrative, whether oral or written, is a staple of every culture the world over. But stories demand time and concentration; the narrative does not simply transmit
information, but invites the reader or listener to witness the
unfolding of events’..

‘I worry that the level of interrupt, the sort of overwhelming rapidity of information…is in fact affecting cognition. It is affecting deeper
thinking. I still believe that sitting down and reading a book is the best way to really learn
something. And I worry that we’re losing that…’

(4) Realising the Full Potential of the Human Mind in the Digital Age
“Even so, mankind will suffer badly from the disease of boredom, a disease spreading more widely each year and
growing in intensity. This will have serious mental, emotional and sociological consequences, and I dare say
that psychiatry will be far and away the most important medical specialty in 2014. The lucky few who can be
involved in creative work of any sort will be the true elite of mankind, for they alone will do more than serve a
machine.”
Isaac Asimov, 1964
