NAIDOC Week Celebrations at MPS
NAIDOC Week is a time to reflect, respect and celebrate the history, culture and achievements of First Nation Peoples, recognising them as the Traditional Owners of the land. This year’s theme for NAIDOC Week is “Heal Country”. At Minchinbury Public School, we are celebrating NAIDOC Week as a whole school community when we come together on Wednesday. Our day commences with a Smoking Ceremony to officially open our Yarning Circle. Students with then be participating in cultural activities, learning about bird totems of the Darug Nation. K‐2 will be learning about the White Cockatoo. Stage 2 will learn about the Black Cockatoo. Stage 3 will focus on the eagle. Students will be learning Darug names for the birds, learning about their importance and why we must care for them. They will be creating artworks around their “adopted” birds. We will finish the day with House Group activities, where students will learn traditional Aboriginal games in small groups of K‐6 students, led by our Year 5 leaders. This is such a happy way to build our community within our school, and we really look forward to the joy of being together.
NSW Department of Education NAIDOC Film
As part of NAIDOC Week, schools across NSW were invited to hold planting ceremonies. Minchinbury Public School was selected to be included in a film about these ceremonies and to capture student responses to the question “What does Heal Country mean to you?”. We feel so proud that our students have been part of this moving process. I encourage you
to view the film, which is published on the NSW Department of Education site at:

an amazing job these students did. We are so incredibly proud of them!
Honour Assemblies
This week, we honour the students in Kindergarten and Stage 2 who have earned their Bronze or Silver
Honour certificate for being respectful, safe learners. We are proud of these students and are thrilled
to be able to have families join us for these special ceremonies.
Snail Trail
We would like to extend our gratitude to all of the families for their support with the recent Snail Trail. Our
students raised a record $2341.40! This money goes directly to our Year 6 students for their end of year
farewell and gift to the school. Congratulations to 2F and 5/6E for winning the hot chip party, as the classes
with the longest trails of coins! Thanks also must go to Mr Pasfield and 5/6P for the excellent job they did
of planning and running the event, as well as the office staff who worked tirelessly counting all of the coins
throughout the day.
Parent‐Teacher Interviews
This week, teachers have been meeting with parents and carers to discuss student progress, reports and
plans for Semester 2. Thank you very much to the families who have made appointments to spend time to
work together with teachers to do the best we can for our students. A very big thank you also needs to go
out to teachers, who have given up time each afternoon/night this week to ensure families can access this
important communication.

P&C
The next P&C meeting will be held at 5.30pm on Thursday 15 July (Term 3, Week
1). The P&C would love to see some new faces join to share their thoughts, hear
what is planned or join in the planning of these important events. Please consider
coming along to have your voice heard. Our students all benefit when we work
together, and many hands make light work!
Zone Cross Country We have so many talented students in such a wide range of areas. Recently, we recognised the
students who competed in our Zone Cross Country Carnival, against students from many other schools.
We had four students win their event and another student who came third in her event. This
impressive effort, plus the efforts of the other students who represented Minchinbury Public School,
meant that we won the overall trophy for zone champions.
Congratulations to our zone place winners:
Alara Turkkan‐ 1st place
Jack Nichols Hession‐ 1st place
Micah Haumono‐ 1st place
Jeyda Turkkan‐ 1st place
Samantha Stanford‐ 3rd place
Staff Changes On Friday, we farewell Miss Fulton, teacher of 3/4F. Miss Fulton has been a valuable member of our teaching staff for five years and will be sadly missed by many. We wish her well in her new teaching role. We are very happy to say that Miss Piggott will be teaching 3/4F for the rest of 2021. Miss Piggott is well‐known to the students and staff, as she has been working regularly with us throughout 2021. She will be a great asset to the Minchinbury team. We also welcome Mr Heath, who will be teaching at Minchinbury on Wednesdays for the rest of the year. Mr Heath will be working across K‐6. The students who have had Mr Heath so far will be able to attest to the fact that he will be another valuable member of our teaching staff. Welcome, Mr Heath! Finally, we welcome back Miss Webster, who will return from leave in Term 2. We are looking forward to seeing her smiling face again around the school!
